Can you solve the maths riddle that is making people cry?

DAMN YOU, NUMBERS.

If you can solve this maths riddle posted on Quora, you are officially a genius and should quit your job immediately to become the new head of NASA.

Take a deep breath and dive into a sea of mental torture:

I saw a shirt for $97. I borrowed $50 from mom and $50 from dad. I bought the shirt with $3 of change. I gave $1 to mom, $1 to dad, and kept $1 for myself. Now I owe my mom $49 and my dad $49. $49+ $49=$98+my $1=$99. Where did the other $1 go?

Um… Yeah. WHERE THE FUCK DID THE OTHER DOLLAR GO? Waaaaah?

So… Do you want the answer? Because we have it. And apparently, according to the people who understand this on Quora, it’s all to do with concentrating on the total rather than the debt. They also think anybody who doesn’t get it, is a complete moron. Here’s a break down:

But. What is the…? Where did it…? How? HOW?

Sorry, brain.

Why would you add your $1 as if it's a credit? You are in debt and that $1 is just part of that debt. You borrowed $100, you paid back $2, you owe $98. End of story.

What you are doing is a bit like going into a shop and buying something for $5. But you only have a $50 note. So you pay with that and get $45 change. "Oh", you say to the shopkeeper, "I now have a $5 note, can I use that instead and get my $50 note back?"

Can you?

I do not understand why this is confusing. You borrowed $50 from each, so you give them $50 back. The rest is irrelevant.
