The insane conspiracy theory behind why Prince Harry is marrying Meghan Markle.

Royal fans the world over were delighted when news broke that Prince Harry had popped the question to Meghan Markle.

After weeks – nay, months! – of media speculation, the pair were finally posing for their first official portraits and sharing intimate details of their courtship on camera for millions to see.

It was a love story perfectly fit for a children's fairytale.

But, because we can't have nice things and everything good must be turned to coal, some people have noticed something darker, something ~~suspicious~~ about the pair's whirlwind romance and engagement.

Because in case you forgot, America was, once upon a time and many moons ago, a British colony. Until 1776, of course, when the United States became the first colony in the world to successfully achieve independence from Britain in the modern era.

On Mamamia Out Loud we discuss why Meghan Markle Is The Role Model Young Women Need:

Awkward.

Which is why, conspiracy theorists believe, it's awfully suspect that Prince Harry has chosen an American to be his wife.

Could it be that this engagement has absolutely NOTHING to do with love, with romance or with corgis?

(The short answer, of course, is no, but we'll play along with this theory for now.)

Apparently, Prince Harry and the royal family (corgis included, we assume) have a master, sinister plan. And the first step is acquiring an American wife.

US writer Greg Polowitz says the royals are "playing long ball" to "get America back".

"Prince Harry's kids will be Americans," he tweeted.

"What if one grows up to be president and is in line for the throne at the same time?

"Brits are playing long-ball here, but it's a smart move. They want America back and this is how they'll do it."

It just makes...so...much...sense?

And many other users agreed.

Of course, there are a few minor technicalities that may or may not void Greg's entire theory. Namely that the Palace has announced Meghan intends to become a British citizen after she marries Harry next May.

While it's unsure if she will renounce her US citizenship to do so, it's unlikely that any future royal children will be dual-citizens.

And while Harry is fifth in line for the throne (until Royal Baby Three arrives next April, that is), his children may have a few other people ahead of them before they're able to wear the biggest crown of all.

Guess we'll just have to wait and see if Prince Harry and Meghan can make American Great Britain again.
