Meghan Markle just threw us a total fashion curve ball and we are so here for it.

Meghan Markle just threw us a fashion curve ball in the form of a positively radiant yellow dress.

Up until now, when it came to the Duchess of Sussex’s post-wedding style, Markle consistently wore beige, blush and neutral-toned outfits – to the point where there was a theory the Queen has ordered her to eschew colour completely.

This might have been an over-reaction. Because attending the Your Commonwealth Youth Challenge reception in London, 36-year-old Markle wore a bright yellow midi dress complete with her signature boat-neckline by American designer Brandon Maxwell. Although Maxwell is best known for his styling work for Lady Gaga, he also counts the likes of ex-first-lady Michelle Obama, model Karlie Kloss and Blake Lively as just some of his devoted fans.

The frock, which retails for a casual $1894, has now sold out. As can be expected.

Markle kept the rest of her outfit understated and simple, pairing the dress with nude court heels, a low bun, a classic smokey eye and nude lips. Interestingly, she also opted for a sleeveless style which is rare for royals, but considering it's currently a balmy 30 degrees Celsius in the UK right now (which counts as a Grade A heatwave for the English), we're going to chalk this decision up to the weather.

Royal watchers also made the immediate connection between the Duchess' golden outfit and the dress Amal Clooney wore to the royal wedding.

Either way, you can probably expect canary yellow to be the colour of summer.

You heard it here first.

Style aside, her fashion sense is just one of the many reasons why we love Meghan Markle. Here are some more:
