19 photos that prove Mauritius should be your next island holiday destination.

2000 kilometres off the southeast coast of Africa is the island of Mauritius – a relatively tiny tropical paradise hugged by the glistening turquoise waters of the Indian ocean.

The island’s 27 micro-climates offer a range of landscapes from coral reefs, rainforests, waterfalls, a dormant volcano and more secluded beaches than you can throw a lounge chair on.

For Aussies, Mauritius is the holiday destination that’s unjustly unknown to a lot of us, despite direct eight hour flights from Perth. From holidayers looking for an immense dose of relaxation to those who don’t want to sit still, you can rest (or hike, walk, scuba-dive etc.) easy. When Club Med invited Mamamia to experience the island and their all-inclusive ourselves (with a gun held to our heads, we swear) we were told kite-surfing was the water sport du jour… however snorkelling, snacking on the local street food, and ample beach time are all perfectly reasonable ways to spend one’s precious vacation hours. Trust us.

So without further ado, here are 19 photos which have us dreaming of a holiday in Mauritius.

1. The beaches. Period.

2. Chamarel 7 Coloured Earth Geopark.

3. Go on safari at the Casela National Park.

4. It’s great for kids.

5. The Chamarel Falls in the Black River Gorges National Park.

6. It’s the destination for kitesurfing.

7. Explore the local sea life.

8. Go swimming with the dolphins.

9. Go on a street food tour in Port Louis and taste the mix of Chinese, French, Creole and Indian cuisines.

10. Explore the street art.

11. And indulge in all the tropical fruits.

12. Go for a spot of kayaking.

13. The sunsets on the west side of the island are divine.

14. Consider booking your accommodation at an all-inclusive resort (we can personally recommend Club Med’s La Plantation d’Albion or La Pointe aux Canonniers) and live that worry-free #resortlyfe.

15. Learn a new skill in-between sipping cocktails by the beach (or pool).

16. And spend a decent chunk of your time on a sun lounger.

17. Take in the sight of Trou aux Cerfs, a dormant volcano located 605m above sea level.

18. Dunk yourself in a waterfall at the Tamarind Falls.

19. Push yourself with a hike and be rewarded with an amazing view.

Mamamia were invited by Club Med to experience their La Plantation d’Albion and  La Plantation d’Albion Club Med resorts in Mauritius, however the opinions and views listed here are our own.

One of my best friends is from Mauritius. She reckons it's great, though she's also aware of the day to day stuff tourists don't see, but that's the same for anywhere.
