Julia Gillard has responded to last night's leadership spill.

No, she’s not chortling into her cornflakes.

Julia Gillard — who many imagined was chuckling to herself while witnessing last night’s political manoeuvres — has responded publicly to the ousting of Tony Abbott.

Ms Gillard, whose own Prime Ministership lasted three years and three days — full a year and seven days more than Mr Abbott — so far has made only one public statement since the #libspill.

Gracious as ever, a very restrained Ms Gillard sent a Tweet addressed to our new PM, Malcolm Turnbull.

The wrote: “Congratulations to Malcolm Turnbull on becoming Prime Minister – a great honour and responsibility.  JG.”

Imagine what she could have said…

Ms Gillard, who is now installed as an honorary University of Adelaide professor, will no doubt have a swing in her step today, if any of the popular memes going around last are anything to go by.

But we’re sure really she has better things to do than gloat.

Just love Julia & at least she could do her job, unlike Abbott who proved to be just hopeless

Can we please stop putting Gillard on a pedestal? Restrained? Gracious as ever? I'm nauseated. She wasn't gracious at Gough Whitlam's funeral, or the lies in her book, or her appearance on The Killing Season. Not surprisingly you left out that Kevin Rudd (who has always been gracious and restrained - to a fault) also tweeted about it. I wonder if this post is published.
