Julia Gillard doesn’t believe in God, the monarchy or marriage. So why is she attending the royal wedding?

That’s what Tony Abbott wants to know. Next, he’ll be asking why Christians attend Jewish weddings, why gay people attend straight weddings or why vegetarians are even invited to the weddings of meat-eaters.

Clearly I missed the memo in which it was declared that the guests must share the beliefs of the bride and groom. Heck, sometimes the bride and groom don’t even share the same beliefs.

Philip Coorey reports in SMH today:

Julia Gillard with partner Tim Mathieson

Tony Abbott has mocked Julia Gillard’s decision to attend next month’s royal wedding, saying she does not believe in God, the monarchy or marriage. Mr Abbott, a staunch Catholic and monarchist who is married with children, questioned Ms Gillard’s bona fides to attend the wedding during yesterday’s joint party room meeting.

….Ms Gillard and her partner, Tim Mathieson, have accepted an invitation to attend next month’s wedding inLondon between Prince William and Kate Middleton at Westminster Abbey. Mr Abbott predicted Ms Gillard would receive another poll bounce from this venture. ”She may not believe in God, the monarchy or marriage but there will be a royal wedding bounce,” he said.

Hey, I’m a Republican and I’d go. With bells on. It’s a wedding not a referendum.

So what do you think? Should Julia Gillard attend the royal wedding next month despite being a non-believing republican living in sin? Is it open season on atheists?

My my, the head of a Commonwelalth nation attend the wedding of the future King of the monarchy! What was she thinking?!

Tony Abbott hides behind his faux-fur cloak of religion and "family values". What a joke. The man is a disgrace, you only need look at his old testament attitudes towards women and homosexuals.

The only thing more worrying than his beliefs is the number of (stupid) Australians who think he has an ounce of integrity or leadership value.

I don't think julia should have gone and she certainly shouldn't have taken her man wife. She was not voted in by the people so why is she representing them at the wedding? As she says she doesn't believe in marriage, god or royalty so why the farce at going? She dresses embarrassingly frumpy and at the wedding wore one of her famous badly fitted white jackets. You would have thought that knowing she was going to such a big event she would have at least tried to get into shape - She should have stayed at home!

if you can't say anything nice...
Not saying anything at all would have been the more mature approach to these thoughts.
Geez, a woman commenting on another woman's figure in public. How antifeminist of you

It would have been more mature if Gillard had stayed true to her ideals and stayed away from the wedding but as we all know she is a liar and on that she did stay true to form. As for being antifeminist, I am ashamed that she is representing us as women - she should take pride in herself as she is representing our nation - sorry frumpiness is not exceptable as part of her job description - she gets enough perks and pay to dress properly and get herself into shape! As for maturity have you heard her scream like a fishwife in parliament that it is embarrasing! We have free speach in this country and it is my democratic right to say what I feel just as you do, so get of your sanctimonious high horse!
