Queensland election candidate quits after being filmed hitting his son.

“I sincerely apologise to my son, my wife and to those who witnessed the event.”

A would-be politician has withdrawn his candidacy after being captured on film slapping his three-year-old son in a cafe on the Sunshine Coast.

Jason Deller was having breakfast with his wife and family at a cafe in Buddina. He told Channel 9 a series of challenging events led him to become frustrated with the behaviour of his son.

“Unfortunately I reacted inappropriately and gave him a clip over his ear,” Mr Deller said.

“I sincerely apologise to my son, my wife and to those who witnessed the event.”

Mr Deller said his child has behavioural issues that requires the help of support services.

“As a father I work hard to provide the love and support that young people need to grow up as healthy and happy adults,” he said.

“I am completely devastated as to how this event has been presented in public but fully understand my responsibilities as a male and as a father to ensure the safety and care of my children and family.”

Mr Deller said he wanted to be elected as an independent to make a difference to the community.

“However out of respect for community perception and wellbeing of my family I intend to withdraw my candidacy as the independent for Kawana at the election tomorrow,” he said.

“I will devote my time to continue to nurture my beautiful family and regain our strength as a family and we will help the community wherever we can.

“I hope that my friends who know us will continue to share the love we have, the love with us as we do for our children.”

The incident was referred to police but no charges have been laid.

Matt Watson needs to change this paragrah: "A would-be politician has withdrawn his candidacy after being captured on film slapping his three-year-old son in a cafe on the Sunshine Coast." This scumbag wasn't slapping his son, he was giving his son a full-blown walloping. Talk about trivialisation of a very serious issue

For those who would attempt to defend this, who are thankfully in the tiny minority, I wonder how they would feel if he had walked up and done this to your two children? I cannot imagine any parent not immediately calling the police and having him charged. And I cannot imagine the police not following up immediately.

So why do a stubborn minority cling to the notion that this is ok because it is their father? This goes to the dark ages belief that our children are our possessions. They are not, it is our privilege to raise our children. Not our right.

The fact that he lost control to such an extent in public is a terrifying indication of how he must terrorise these children in private. The mother's docile acceptance shows 1 of 2 things - Either she is also terrorised and believes any intervention would only make things worse or 2) she is on board with the abuse.

Either way, he must be charged, this was a CRIME. No ifs, ands or buts. And DOCs must get involved immediately and keep monitoring the situation.
