I like Anna Bligh so much. I even like the way she talks about her botox.

Qld Premier Anna Bligh receiving a congratulatory kiss from her husband on election night

This is not a political statement particularly. I know nothing of the issues that were relevant in last weekend’s Queensland election. Nor do I know (or really care) about her policy positions.
This is a ‘like’ born purely of her vibe. Her mojo.
I like the way she looks and sounds. I like her tone and I like her attitude. And I like that she has become Australia’s first elected female premier.

Last year, when she admitted in a radio interview that she’d had botox, there was a bit of a storm but I thought it was terrific. Not necessarily that she’d HAD the botox – although I am a defender of an individual’s right to choose what he or she does to their face/body – but the way she handled the question with such honesty, humour and grace. You can hear how it went down here.

[Thanks Brenden for hooking me up with that audio]

I'm a Brizzo and didn't vote for AB this time for one BIG reason. Although she's a mum, one of the policies that she's adamant about is closing down the Royal Childrens Hospital, effectively leaving the northside of Brisbane without an emergency department/hospital bed for an injured or sick child.
We now have to cross the river on ridiculously congested bridges that run from the CBD. Getting the picture here?
Like everybody else here I too applaud her for being a strong person, yet still womanly (she has the most amazingly beautiful suits/wardrobe). I also think she's a wonderful role model for young girls and hold her up as such for my 11 and 9 year old, however, I also let them know that people CAN make mistakes, and that this particular one really is.
Do hope her government has a rethink on this enormous issue.

Choosing women as cabinet ministers has proved to be a good thing in Liberia. I saw it on Oprah. Gotta love affirmative action to rebalance the scales after all these years of testosterone-poisoning around the world. It's about time women had a turn to govern in their own way, cause I think the men have had long enough and frankly they've made a big cock-up of the world. (Pun intended).
