I always wanted to be a model

Have you ever taken a close look at the models in high-end fashion magazines and thought about how ridiculous their poses are? I mean, who lies along park benches with one arm in the air or stands against a wall looking pouty? How often do you jump in the air in heels?

Tracey Spicer spoke about this clip by Spanish artist Yolanda Dominguez when she was on Mamamia on Sky recently. In the video, Dominguez has people pose like high-end fashion models in public places to highlight the ridiculousness of the poses.

Tracey said: “She’s gone out onto the street and she’s gotten ordinary women who are doing their shopping to pretend to be models in high end fashion magazines.”

“I’m a feminist and I love ranting about this but you make a better point through humor and what she’s doing is decontextualising and showing the irony of how absurb these high-end fashion magazines.”

Have a look:

Oh, and while we’re on the subject, check out these hilarious ‘Men Ups’ shots of men in those awkward poses usually reserved for women.

Would you buy anything from these brands if the models didnt have eye catching poses? I find this extremely out of context. Sure the poses are funny, but if in a fashion magazine and with real models, these poses are quality. The fashion industry provides because the consumer demands.
This is disrespectful to models who spend hours in a pose waiting for photograhers to get their shot. This artist says she's feminist, so poking fun at models who actually work for their keep, is helping females?

I agree - posing is about presenting the clothes in an artful way and creating an appealing visual as part of a brand. This article reminds me of the people who sneer at modern or abstract art saying it doesn't look realistic. Imagine if mannequins were used instead of models. The effect would be entirely different. If you aren't interested in fashion as art then don't buy the magazines just order online. But at least appreciate there is merit in it, even if only out of respect for the hard work involved by many.

Classic. I was a bridesmaid at a friend's wedding last year and we got the photographer to snap a few shots of us in stupid bridal mag pics. Too funny!
