The Great Gatsby: First (amazing) look!

It’s here.

After filming in Sydney, we’ve now got the first glimpse of Baz Luhrmann’s re-imagining of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel. The film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan, will be released in Australia in January 2013.

In typical Baz style, the trailer looks absolutely stunning. Our hearts just got caught in our mouths.

So, have a look and tell us what you think:

It screams Las Vegas. Attention to detail will be perfect however Baz is about pizazz and not the subtleties of Fitzgerald. The original with Redford and Farrow is simply a classic that should have been left to stand on its own.

Not sure about his attention to detail- there's already an error in the trailer. In the Times Square shot, Ziegfeld Follies is incorrectly spelt "Zeigfeld Follies". I'm sure it will be fixed by the time it is released though! I liked his spin on Shakespeare so quite looking forward to it. (do agree that redford and farrow are loverly too)

I agree, Penny Lane. Luhrmann does visually lush very well, no doubt it will be a treat, but as for the narrative and characters, I guess we'll see. I would have liked to have seen Michelle Williams as Daisy, but I'm sure Carey Mulligan will do it well.

I would have loved to see Joseph Gordon Levitt as Carraway and Ryan Gosling as Gatsby.

Adore Cary Mulligan as Daisy, though.
