Glenn McGrath and wife Sara Leonardi have welcomed their first baby.

After a vasectomy and two rounds of IVF, the cricketing great has wonderful news to share.

Australian cricket champion Glenn McGrath and his wife of five years, Sara, have welcomed their first child into the world.

Madison Mary Harper McGrath was born on Friday afternoon in Sydney.

“Huge congratulations to Glenn and Sara McGrath who this afternoon welcomed their first child. The name is adorable!” the Australian Women’s Weekly tweeted on Friday.

With Sara’s due date being in early October, Madison’s arrival was almost a month earlier than expected, however both Mum and bub are said to be doing well.

After their long and well-documented struggles with conceiving, which included two rounds of IVF and a reversal of Glenn’s 2003 vasectomy, the couple is undoubtedly delighted by their new baby’s safe and healthy arrival.

Madison is Glenn McGrath’s third child. His two children to his late wife, Jane McGrath, who died of breast cancer in 2008, are apparently very excited about the tiny new addition to their family. Glenn was away on cricket tours during the early days of his two children, James, now 15, and Holly, now 13, so he’s vowing to be more “hands on” for this child.

“[Son] James used to ask us on a regular basis whether we were going to give him a baby brother. To see both their faces when they learned the news. James jumped up and gave both of us a hug and kiss. And that was really special for me and I know it meant a lot to Sara.”

In response to what Jane would think about the news, he has said she would be happy for him.

“I know she would want me to be happy and she’d want her children to be happy and they are,” Glenn told Australian Women’s Weekly earlier this year.

“I have never been one to live in the past. Sara and I are very happy together and the kids are two really happy, normal children and I think, at the end of the day, that’s really the true measure of what Sara and I have built together these last five years of marriage.”

It’s delightful news for the cricketing legend, who was publicly berated last year for hunting animals in Australia and Africa, a revelation that saw donations to The McGrath Foundation withdrawn. As damning images of McGrath gained traction online, the sporting star explained his involvement with hunting as an outcome of grief over the loss of his first wife, Jane McGrath.

Congratulations to Glenn, Sara, and the family!

Madison? Adorable? Serious? Not in my book! Madison, McKenzie - when did this habit of giving surnames as first names start, and when will it end? A beautiful girl and of all the beautiful feminine names, they name her Madison? Please stop the world, I want to get off.
