Gigi Hadid's Melania Trump impression at the American Music Awards is dividing people.

Supermodel Gigi Hadid took to the stage at the 2016 American Music Awards to try her hand at hosting a major Hollywood event.

She’d teamed up with Saturday Night Live cast member Jay Pharoah, who is known for his amazing celebrity impersonations, and her fans were anxiously awaiting what she would do.

So it was fairly inevitable that Gigi would try her hand at her own impersonation of a famous face… and she did so in the show’s opening moments.

Gigi tackled one of the most talked-about women in recent weeks: Melania Trump.

And things got pretty awkward.

Putting on her best pout and a heavy Slovenian accent, Hadid said, "I love my husband, President Barack Obama and our children Sasha and Malia," poking fun at Melania's tendency to... erm... 'borrow' lines from the most recent FLOTUS.

Some fans thought Hadid's take was hilarious:

But there were many more who weren't so impressed, labelling it "embarassing", "unconscionable" and racist:

Melania is low hanging fruit; it's easy to make fun of her accent, write her off as a catalogue bride and generally just rip her to pieces. Perhaps it's because she's a woman? They always seem to cop it worse in politics. Unsurprisingly it's escalated to the point where Trump protesters have held "rape Melania" signs. The woman did nothing to deserve the hate she's getting - especially when she's come out and said that she tells Trump to shut it, which he promptly ignores. She isn't his minder, and should not be blamed for his actions.
