Video of the day: The 'Real' Facebook

Our online lives are kind of odd, don’t you think? We would never treat people in real life the same way as we treat people on the Internet – and to prove this point, a couple of opera stars have taken to the streets to see what would happen if we took our Facebook and Twitter practises out into the real world. They try to write on people’s walls, “like” their statuses and flick through their holiday snaps.

The video is actually a commercial from the English National Opera for a new opera called Two Boys – “A new opera that lifts the lid on the dangers of living our lives online”.

Are you generally feeling a bit over Facebook at the moment? Adelaide girl Madelaine Zammit feels the same way. Her ‘Facebook song’ has taken off and – with over 300,000 views on Youtube so far – it’s worth having a listen..

How are you feeling about Facebook at the moment?

I was "over" Facebook for 2-3 years. Just wasn't interested.

At the beginning of this year, a friend committed suicide. And I realised how important it is to stay connected with people. Of course, it is at a superficial level. But it still matters.

So now I use Facebook again. Sure, it's silly and shallow at times but it is also a way of keeping in touch, and letting people know that you are thinking of them and that you care about what is happening in their lives. It's a good thing, in many ways.

Facebook has it's good and it's bad points. All my family are on it and since we are spread so far apart, it helps us keep connected (I get to see what my siblings are up to, my parents stop/start fretting appropriately). Being stuck at home too I find the mummy support invaluable.

FB can drain alot of you though. I find some of the truly inane stuff infuriating, but that is people's life. Sometimes it's boring and trivial, sometimes it's not.

And then when something big does happen, the support I have gotten from fb is immense, overwhelming, and truly wonderful. So for that, I love FB. Although another downside I've found is that you can start to care too much for people you have never met in real life. Or is that just me?
