Ed Sheeran's new girlfriend was made to pass a bizarre test on their second date.

Singer song-writer Ed Sheeran has told The Times UK that he decided to put his girlfriend, 24-year-old financial consultant Cherry Seaborn, to the test on their second official date, to see if they were actually compatible.

Oh, um. Cool. That sounds fun.

You see, Sheeran is very important and also incredibly famous, and he needs a girlfriend who can… deal with that.

So, for their second date, Sheeran, 26, invited Seaborn to a gala where he was to accept an award.

Sheeran then proceeded to leave Seaborn COMPLETELY ALONE for two whole hours to “test” her and see if she could hold her own without him there to look after her.

LISTEN: Monique Bowley, Mia Freedman and I discuss; Is ‘testing’ our partners something we all do? Post continues below.

Spoiler: She could, because she is a fully grown adult woman.

In Sheeran’s words, “One of the main points of being in a relationship with me, you have to be really sociable and good at talking to people, because I will be dragged away loads at parties and events. And Cherry’s perfect at it. She makes friends with everyone.”

The pair have been dating since 2015, and although most of their relationship has been long distance, Seaborn has now moved to the UK from the US to be with Sheeran.

There is no news yet as to whether Seaborn then took Sheeran to one of her financial consulting events as punishment, where she left him speaking to a group of people about exchange rates and, um, analytics etc.

My first instinct was that leaving someone alone at a party you invited them to for two hours, girlfriend or not, is just a bit… cruel. And not to mention a downright shitty date.

I am sure Sheeran does get called away often, and it would be naive to think dating him would be like dating the average person. But perhaps if he is attending a ceremony to receive an award for his work, it’s best to leave his girlfriend at home.

But with that said, aren’t we all constantly testing our partners to gauge our compatibility?

You can listen to the full episode of Mamamia Out Loud, here.

How do they speak to waitstaff? How do they treat their mum and dad? Do they get along with your friends? Do your values align? How do they respond to conflict? Does your dog trust them? These are all very important questions.

Perhaps Sheeran is just being efficient. Isn’t it slightly idealistic to think that just because we ‘like’ someone they are going to seamlessly slip into our lives?

The singer song-writer might have the right idea.

Know what you want and be forthright about it. After all, it worked for them.

I love Ed, but personally I would be kind of pissed if my partner did this to me. I am not a naturally outgoing person, and an event where I don't know anyone is pretty much my worst nightmare. I am fine with people I know, or small numbers of people I don't know, but a room full of strangers would be awful - it's actually making me almost tear up just thinking about it. I understand Ed's point about his girlfriend needing to be 'self-sufficient' in situations like this, but he's lucky she seems to be an outgoing person in the first place. It could have ended very differently!

Hahaha u spend the first half of this article making fun of him and criticising him for doing such a thing (how dare he put her to the test!!)... and then the second half admitting that everyone tests their partners to see if they're compatible.

What a complete non-issue. If a famous female celebrity said this about her boyfriend would u be outraged by it? Ofcourse not, u wouldn't give it a second thought.
