Woman stabbed, doused in petrol breaks her silence: "I'm so thankful I was able to get away."

Three weeks on from the brutal attack that almost claimed her life, Dr Angela Jay has broken her silence, imploring people to help bring an end to domestic violence.

28-year-old Jay was attacked by her 36-year-old former partner inside her Port Macquarie home, stabbed 11 times and doused in petrol. Incredibly, she survived the attack, escaping to a nearby neighbour’s house before emergency services arrived.

Her ex-partner – who had a long history of domestic abuse – fled the scene but was later shot dead by police in a standoff.

Posting an aerial image of a white ribbon to Facebook on Friday, Jay wrote, "Today is White Ribbon Day and also Thanksgiving in the US. Both have particular significance for me this year as I almost lost my life 3 weeks ago in a very violent way."

"Already this year in Australia 60+ women have not been so lucky, and it breaks my heart knowing exactly how terrified and alone they must have felt," the post continued.

Jay had recently ended the relationship with her ex-partner and taken out an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO) against him.

Her ex-partner broke the order and flew from Sydney to Jay's home in Port Macquarie to hide inside her house and wait for her to return from work.

"I'm so thankful that I was able to get away and be here with all of my amazing friends and family today," the post continued. "I'm also thankful for the police, paramedics, doctors, and nurses that cared for me and helped me feel safe again on the worst day of my life."

Finally, Jay's post urged her Facebook friends to take the White Ribbon pledge, which to date, only just over 100,000 men have taken.

Alongside the personal account, the 28-year-old gynaecologist updated her Facebook profile photo to include a template that reads: "I say no to violence against women and girls."
