Condoms. IUDS. The Pill. Oh my.

After a recent pregnancy scare, popular Mamamia commenter Young Vintage is looking for some advice on contraception. She writes…

“I went on the pill last year, not just because having a baby definitely was NOT on the cards, but also because of the added bonus of it helping to clear up oily skin. Unfortunately though, I ended up having yukky side effects, like going from a 10B to 10D, which I hated – although my skin never looked better.  I was also concerned about the potential increased risk of breast cancer, since my beautiful Mum was diagnosed with that last year.  After almost a year of trying to stick it out, I decided to go off it because the cons were far outweighing the pros…

My body has returned to ‘normal’ now, since my hormones have had a while to settle. So now I’m considering trying out a different form of contraception. I’ve never been fully comfortable with only using condoms. The thought that I could be one of the ‘unlucky’ ones (despite diligently taking precautions) makes me really uneasy…

I’d love to hear about the experiences that the MM community have had – and also hear some of their wisdom. I’ve been doing a bit of research online and have been speaking to girlfriends and my GP about it but  I also value the opinions and experiences of the women and men in the Mamamia world and I’d love to hear their stories – good and bad!”

Hi

from a males point of view, stick to the condoms, tell the guys to get over it,
My wife and I used them for 14 years before we decided to have children,

I don't think guys would want to take pills and affect their chemistry so why should they expect women to.

Passion and spontaneity is not affected it just becomes part of the routine, if you can manage to take off her bra and kickers you can take the time to put on a condom. Also I found it easier to clean up afterward, the down side is you can't lay there and enjoy the close contact.

Now that I am circumcised, no longer a problem, also another issue which a lot of men should just get over.

Due to blood clotting I can only use condoms, everything else increases my risks too much. And there are no horror stories (things getting implanted in uteruses, mood swings, hormones going nuts) about condoms.

I find it amazing that people here aren't willing to just use them. I guess after realising they are my only option I just got used to it. If a guy isn't willing to get one on, he isn't worth it. And if it breaks you know right away and you go get yourself the morning after pill. To me, that's pretty fail safe.
