This attack really does highlight how much covert and overt violence exists in Australian society. Yes, alcohol plays a part, but surely the underlying cause of street violence is our culture. Everywhere you look, you see guys who want others to be impressed by their biceps. It is fine to say that these guys are just adopting healthy lifestyles, but for too many, the truth is they want the world to see them as "tough guys". There are clearly just too many brainless, loser, disenfranchised thugs who leave home on a Friday or Saturday night looking for a target. One case may not make a difference, but it is time for the Courts to give the scumbag perpetrator(s) in this tragic case the maximum sentence. The charge against this miserable excuse for a human being (let alone as a man) does not require the Crown to prove he acted with intent to kill. It is sufficient that he landed a blow and the victim has died. The maximum permissible sentence is life imprisonment. We are quite properly outraged by Baden-Clay's apparent manipulation of the legal system - but that is because the outrage fits the current and trendy "violence against women" campaign. How about similar societal and media outrage for a young and innocent man killed because of a senseless act of violence and to send the appropriate message to the Courts.
