All of the celebrities who have thrown their weight behind Johnny Depp.

As with any celebrity scandal, it’s not long before the famous people come out in droves to announce their side of the fence.

Unsurprisingly, the allegations that Johnny Depp physically assaulted his estranged wife, Amber Heard, are no exception to this. Everyone from the actor’s distant acquaintances to the mother of his children have announced the news as false, Heard as a liar, her photographs as fabricated and her story as categorically untrue.

According to some Hollywood stars, their own chummy relationships with Depp indicate he is simply incapable of causing harm to others. We know from experience, of course, that this assumption is untrue.

The celebs include British actor Paul Bettany, for instance, who is “just saying” that Johnny is sweet and kind and gentle.

Or The X-Files star, Laurie Holden, who refuses to skip Depp’s movies because of his “personal life”.

Then there’s Mickey Rourke, who apparently knows what happened behind the closed doors of the Depp-Heard household, the retired boxer and actor telling TMZ yesterday that Johnny’s “a very low key guy, he’s always been really low key and a gentleman and not violent.”

Not all celebrities look favourably upon Depp, however. The Office’s Rainn Wilson came out with a particularly damning tweet in the wake of the abuse allegations.

And Late Night‘s Andy Richter weighed in with this tweet.

While we do not know what really happened between the separated husband and wife, we do know one thing: Sometimes, abusers are the last people you’d expect to be abusers.

Sometimes, abusers abuse their partners even though they didn’t abuse previous partners. Sometimes, the affect of drugs and alcohol come into play. And sometimes, we need to realise that our perception of a person may be disjointed from the reality of that person.

Someone being a ‘good guy’ and sharing a beer with you, doesn’t make them incapable of abuse. It’s as simple and as blunt as that.

Paul Bettany has it right. Let the facts come out before passing judgement.

None of us have any idea what happened. Both parties are actors and no doubt very convincing. Both have much to gain by lying. And so far it's his word against hers

No, not just his word against hers. There was a few witnesses. One gave a sworn statement to a court of law that JD was being abusive and violent. What part of that don't you people get? You do know you are part of the problem, or don't you care? Certainly a lot of people have shown their true colours since this has come out and this is why so many women die. Read up on the US stats for DV. They will make your blood curdle. Also statistically men lie MUCH more in these situations if you want the truth. I was told by an expert in DV that contrary to popular belief, women in family violence situations downplay even the very worst violence. Women can be in incredible danger and yet still don't want to make a very big deal of things. That is why when a women comes in saying her safety is at risk, they take her word for it and she is always right. Incredible MM, you read these comments, how very prejudiced people are towards women. Explains so much I suppose. Also Amber would know more than any of us how well loved JD is, it must have been very hard for her to come forward.

I don't think keeping an open mind about the situation when we don't have all the facts is being prejudiced. I have no idea who is in the right here and I don't want to rush to judgement to either side without knowing the full facts.

Actually the statistics do make my blood curdle. DV is horrifyingly common and I strongly believe much more needs to be done to both prevent it and to protect those suffering. I've spoken up many times in support of the victims

However. Maybe I've missed something (definitely possible, I haven't been following it all that closely) but the only witness I've heard named was the best friend. The rest has come from "sources close to the situation" - and we know what that usually means. I don't believe in automatically damning someone because of what is reported in the media.

I'm certainly NOT defending JD. Neither am I accusing AH of fabricating the events. But trial by social media is always a bad idea.

Of course I don't know them, but have always been a fan of Johny. Next thing I will say is that his past has always been pretty wild (like a trashed motel room) but at no point has any ex of his ever accused him of being violent towards them, something that would have surely not been kept quiet all these years. I have been in an abusive marriage with a mentally unstable person so if what Amber is saying is true I know what she is going through and I'm glad she got out. If it's true. One thing life has tought me is that people rarely change. It is possible his substance abuse and loss of his mum sent him over the edge but my biggest question is why now when he's always had this issue? Again if it's true I'm glad she got way but I would also like the truth to come out because false allegations are part of the reason domestic violence is not taken seriously. And that's a world wide issue!
