Cate Blanchett and Nicole Kidman respond to Harvey Weinstein allegations.

Australian Oscar winner Cate Blanchett has joined compatriot Nicole Kidman in making a statement on the bombshell sexual assault allegations against Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein.

“Any man in a position of power or authority who thinks it’s his prerogative to threaten, intimidate or sexually assault any woman he encounters or works alongside needs to be called to account,” Blanchett told Variety.

“It is never easy for a woman to come forward in such situations and I wholeheartedly support those who have.”

Blanchett worked with the Weinstein Co on films such as Carol and The Aviator, for which she won the best supporting actress Oscar.

Earlier, Kidman also applauded women for speaking out against abuse and misuse of power.

The actress however, who has a long history of working with Weinstein, like Blanchett did not name the disgraced mogul in her remarks.

Kidman has previously collaborated with Weinstein, with some of her most successful films - including award nominated roles in Lion and Cold Mountain, and bomb Grace of Monaco - made with him.

"As I've stated before publicly, I support and applaud all women and these women who speak out against any abuse and misuse of power - be it domestic violence or sexual harassment in the workforce," Kidman, in a statement released to People magazine, said.

"We need to eradicate this behaviour."

The statements came as former US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and a growing list of A-List actresses including Meryl Streep, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lawrence and Angelina Jolie condemned Weinstein after New York Times and New Yorker investigations exposed the Oscar-winning mogul's alleged behaviour.

The New Yorker report, which came after a 10 month investigation, alleged 13 women between the 1990s and 2015 were sexually harassed or assaulted by Weinstein.

Not naming HW specifically is pretty non-committal, given that is what they're being asked to comment on. Makes me wonder what secrets they have to protect when people make statements like these. He must have slept with/made loads of women have sex with him to think he could get away with it every time.
