Brussels terror attacks: The world reacts and unites.

As we wake to the news of yet another terrorist attack – this time leaving at least 34 dead in the European capital, Brussels, the world unites, showing solidarity with the victims and standing firm against the terrorists.

The attack comes just a week after a bomb in Turkey – the sixth in eight months killing more than 200 people in that time – and the November attacks in Paris that left 130 dead.

https://twitter.com/otiose94/status/712239102075248641 Belgian locals and ex-pats are uniting using the hashtag #OpenHouse, #PorteOuverte and #ikwilhelpen, on social media to offer rides and accommodation to people stranded in Brussels to the injured, to the lonely and even to the thirsty. https://twitter.com/Airwaysfoodie/status/712317063528914944 Social media has also seen an unlikely symbol of defiance emerge – frites, or fried potatoes sending a unique message to those who seek to destroy the peace.

Meanwhile across the world leaders from the Pope, through to Barack Obama have condemned the attacks:

The Pope:

British leader David Cameron:

And the Australian Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull:

Meanwhile in Brussels people are taking to the streets writing words of love and peace in chalk. The Place de la Bourse, located next to the Brussels Stock Exchange, has become flooded with locals and tourists shocked, grieving and defiant.

“Let’s take back the power over our world, our revenge will be dreadful, let’s think about the victims.”

“We are one” says another.
