History was made in June this year when the AFL announced a national women’s competition to begin in February 2017.
The inaugural women’s competition will feature eight teams, including Melbourne, Collingwood, the Brisbane Lions and the Western Bulldogs.
Tonight, a number of star players are in attendance at the Brownlow Medal, in what is a powerful move in including women in all aspects of the AFL. These women are highly impressive athletes and no doubt we’ll be hearing their names more and more in the months to come.
Collingwood Football Player Moana Hope brought businesswoman and Vice President of the Western Bulldogs Football Club Susan Alberti as her date, and it looks like they couldn’t possibly be having more fun.
The AFL star joked “I’m a bit of a fish out of water with all this,” but she looks completely comfortable in her beautiful red carpet gown.
Many of the women shared behind-the-scenes images as they got ready for the event, with Darebin Falcons repping the iconic ‘W’ for the women’s league as she had her hair done.
Fellow players Kaitlyn Ashmore of the Brisbane Lions and Melissa Hickey of the Melbourne Demons also shared snapshots of their Brownlow preparations.
And once Katie, Daisy, Mel, Susan and Moana hit the red carpet, they completely owned it.
When the national women’s league was announced, AFL chairman Mike Fitzpatrick said it would “provide a platform to inspire young girls to reach for the stars and provide another avenue for fans of Australian football to enjoy.”
We hope tonight is just the beginning of that invaluable step forward.
