Birth plans: waste of time or good idea? Discuss.

So, I go to my obstetrician for my regular monthly check-up. We’re
getting towards the business end of this pregnancy – the final
trimester – so it’s time to talk birth.

“What’s the plan?” he asks.
“Epidural” I say, so fast that I almost spit the word out onto his desk.
“Right,” he says, looking down at my notes to trigger his memory of my last birth: short labour, no drugs. “You know you could do it without an epidural if you wanted to.”
At this point, my husband (who is there with me) and I speak at the same time.
Me: “But I don’t WANT to do it without an epidural!”
Husband:
“Please, no, I couldn’t bear to hear about it for the next ten years if
she has to give birth again without an epidural.”

Forget the Birth Plan! Create a birth map! You need to understand the risks involved with interventions, and not just flippantly demand them. There is evidence to show the long term effects of epidurals and synthetic oxytocin...did you know there is a correlation between births with these elements and autism?

Take some time to understand the biology of birth, prepare mentally, get a doula! This is one of the most important things you will ever do, it is not just one day, and how we give birth does matter for us and our babies.

Informed Birth Planning really does make a difference. It takes out the guess work, suggests awesome resources that encourage women to own their birth, and takes women beyond the birth and encourages some planning for the early weeks. It is a comprehensive 'thinking woman's' guide. Once the planning is done, the guide encourages a blessing way or gathering of support, to help you sink into The Zone; Informed, confident, prepared. It is already available as a workbook and ebook, My friend is currently crowd funding to make it into an App (power in the palm of your hand! awesome!)
