Best and worst … gardenias, mangoes and the Pike River mining tragedy

It is the weekend (well close enough to call it) and time for Best and Worst.

If you are new to this post – Best and Worst on a Friday is like the Mamamia Friday night drinks.  We get together with old friends and we make new ones.  We talk, we laugh and we cry about the week that was.  And we don’t even have to drive home.    So let me start with my best

BEST: Gardenias and mangoes. My gardenias are in full bloom and I’ve put them in glasses all over the house. Mixed with the smell of fresh mangoes in my fruit bowl…I can smell summer. Also, being able to share the magnificent Elizabeth with the MM community.

WORST: Feeling like this year has gone too fast, literally slipped through my fingers….

ON MY MIND : the horrors of the Pike River mining tragedy in New Zealand. As Tracy Grimshaw tweeted a couple of days ago, we’ve become so used to miners being rescued, this came as a terrible shock. Thoughts with the families…..particularly the mother of the 17 year old boy who went off for his first day of work at the mine and never came home……..

I know this is a late response but...

best: catching up with extended family for a pre-christmas party and attending my Goddaughter's first communion.

worst: not being treated how I should be by my employers even if it is just a simple retail position, I am a part-timer, I know my rights but in a small company it just seems so much harder to stand up for yourself (cf the companies I used to work for being huge department stores). And the fact that everyone is starting their law clerkships at the moment or very soon and I was supposed to be one of them but no law firm accepted me.

Lilly Rose, it sounds like you're having a bit of a tough time at the moment, so I'm wishing you all the best.

I know how it feels to be treated badly by your employer, you just need to do the best you can. Don't let it get you down and take whatever action you feel comfortable with - calling them on bad behaviour or illegal practises, or just looking for something else and moving on without rocking the boat.

As to the law clerkship, I'm sorry you missed out. I hope that you will soon be able to see why the universe didn't come through with that option - I'm sure something better is right around the corner! Keep looking, keep going and keep your chin up.

You're ace.

Best: I had a lovely time on a shopping trip with some workmates. They are awesome, funny, and caring people. Withsome very funny stories to tell. One even had the shopping trip bus driver in stitches.

Worst: Work, relationship probs... Work will be sorted when we go for Christmas Break. The 5 week break will do me good. Just sick of the stress of a people who offload jobs onto people like me who need to learn to say no.
Relationship problems will sort out. We talk, we compromise. We're both just exhausted, not seeing each other enough, and not happy at work. Once Christmas is here and we have some time to relax together all will be well.

OMM: The pike river mining tragedy, so sad.
I got accepted to do my masters... I'm ready for a busy year next year.
