A father was charged with theft after confiscating his daughter's iPhone.

Ronald Jackson found an inappropriate text on his 12-year-old daughter’s iPhone, so he took it away.

But rather than ending in the usual ‘I’M NEVER SPEAKING TO YOU AGAIN!’ and dramatic door slam, it ended in an arrest.

The girl’s mother rang Grand Prairie Police, claiming the phone belonged to her and had been stolen. Thirty-six-year-old Jackson was arrested and charged with theft. The incident took place in 2013, and according to CBS, Jackson was placed in handcuffs at approximately two o’clock in the morning. He was later released after posting US$1,500 bail.

Then, a year-and-a-half later, he was charged with misdemeanor theft. He was found not guilty after two days due to a lack of evidence. CBS reports he was also allowed to keep the confiscated phone.

“I didn’t want the police department telling me how to parent my child,” Jackson told CBS. “It made no sense to me for them to show up and make a big deal out of something that was a small thing.”

“I was being a parent,” he added. “You know, a child does something wrong, you teach them what’s right.” Most children will have had something confiscated by their mum or dad at some point. “You tell them what they did wrong and you give them a punishment to show that they shouldn’t be doing that.”

Sadly, Jackson has stated the debacle has cause an irreparable rift. “I have to separate myself from them,” he said, according to The Telegraph. “I can’t ever have a relationship with them again.”

The mother has not set a good example for her daughter in this situation. She's basically told her, "Call the police and you'll get what you want".

My thoughts were several degrees stronger than this as I assumed the mother was using public servants (the police) to score points against the father. Why did police think it warranted a 2am bust and was the mother charged with wasting police time?
