A reminder to Slip, Slop, Slap, people…..

I once read a description of Donatella as looking like a ‘leather sandal who had been left by the side of a hot, dusty road for 24 years.’
I’m not usually in the habit of slagging off people for how they look but….I laughed. Although sad is what this is. No wonder she’s such good friends with Madonna. I can imagine all these frightening people in a room telling each other how faaaabulous they look.

I wonder if part of the reason this picture is so shocking, is that we so rarely see images of the bodies of women who are over 30 years old. We also dont see the bodies of women who have normal saggy bits that come with age and/or childbearing. Now Im not saying that those bosoms and tan are normal, but perhaps the rest actually is? How would we know?

In other parts of this site, we have applauded the depiction of women who represent a more normal range of sizes than is usually shown in magazines - and seen ground-breaking magazine pictures of young, firm, perky models representing a more normal range of body sizes. All were undeniably 'beautiful'. This challenges the notion that only very slim female bodies are attractive enough to be seen.

What about the notion that older female bodies are also attractive enough to be seen? That its ok to have thighs that arnt firm, bellies with excess skin, skin that is no longer supple and of uneven colouring. These are the characteristics of 'real women' every bit as much as the generous young curves we are beginning to accept as beautiful.

I dont think we are anywhere near accepting the idea that a mature body, showing all that it has been through, is also beautiful. Few would claim that a post-childbirth woman or a woman over 40 is too damaged or old to be sexual and beautiful. Why cant we look at their bodies then, without feeling repulsed?

Its still much easier to ridicule a female body that is saggy and worn looking.
