Imagine a tropical holiday destination where you can be checked into your room and sipping on a welcome cocktail seven minutes after stepping off the plane. No dealing with hectic baggage carousels, no waiting in long queues for taxis or hire cars, no peak hour traffic.

Sounds impossible right? Well, it exists and it’s right here in our collective backyard.

It’s only two hours from Sydney (direct flight) and 90 minutes from Brisbane. It’s… um… ah… maybe I’ll just keep this one to myself. Oh alright then, it’s Hamilton Island. And if you haven’t been yet, you Really. Must. Go.

Recently I had the opportunity to tag along to the ‘Ultimate InstaMeet’ (a social media campaign organised through photography app, Instagram designed to showcase Hamilton Island to a domestic and international audience) along with celebrity ambassadors, photographers and four young ‘Pilgramers’ from America.

And here’s where I have a confession to make; I didn’t really read the briefing documents for the event properly until the day before I was due to fly out. I had essentially glossed over the fact I was going on a tropical island holiday with a bunch of celebrities and fashion people. And a model.

The high profile list of ambassadors included Masterchef contestant, writer and foodie Hayden Quinn, Brownlow medallist and Geelong Cats’ footballer Jimmy Bartel, The Voice contestant and singer Sarah De Bono, fashion designers Camilla and Marc Freeman, Vogue’s senior fashion editor Christine Centenera, fashion designer Josh Goot, stylist Romy Frydman and model Annabella Barber.

Hence why I found myself at the shops on the Thursday night before, panic-buying a pair of printed pants and two dresses. I carried the what-to-pack anxiety with me to the airport, where I  snapped up a pair of designer sunnies at the terminal (the whole transaction lasted about three minutes, it’s a talent I tell you).

Armed with my new purchases I felt a little more confident about the trip, that was until I saw the fashion ambassadors at the airport gate wearing head-to-toe black, six-inch heels and I even spotted a Chanel boucle jacket. Looking down at my Witchery printed pants and Country Road metallic sandals I wondered if I had totally misread the dress code, we were going to a tropical island, weren’t we?

I really needn’t have worried, during the next three days the fashion crowd kept mostly to themselves and it is really hard to be stressed out in a place where the main mode of transport is a golf buggy.

Thankfully golfing wasn’t on the itinerary (not my forte) but there was plenty of wining and dining to be had. We kicked off the weekend with lunch at the award-winning luxury resort Qualia and I can still taste the creamy oysters and citrusy kingfish ceviche from the delicious seafood platter.

After lunch we were left to explore the island before dinner at the Yacht Club and I took full advantage of the infinity pool at the Beach Club resort where I called home for the next two nights. It was there I got chatting to a lovely couple who were celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary; they had married and honeymooned on Hamilton Island a decade before and since then, three children had entered their now hectic lives. It was only an hour into their week long break but you could see they had already visibly unwound (that or it could’ve been the rum in their cocktails). And that’s the thing about ‘Hamo’ (as the locals call it), it’s one of the most relaxing places I have ever been to. And as I spent much time pinching myself (and wondering why no one had told me about this place before), I was already planning my return.

Day two began with an early 4am start as we hiked up Passage Peak (who says I wasn’t working hard?) to watch the sunrise over an incredible view of the Whitsunday islands. The rest of the afternoon was spent snorkelling and swimming at Chalkies and Whitehaven beach which as the itinerary promised was “one of the most beautiful beaches in the world,” and we weren’t disappointed. Trying to nail a fitting adjective for the colour of the water, was it azure? turquoise? We simply settled for paradise. Paradise with a capital P.

As all good journeys must come to an end, it was fitting my concluded with a chat to an elderly gentleman  (actually a Dung Beetle entomologist – not everyday you meet one of those) on the plane ride home whose eyes lit up when we got talking about the island. It turns out that the week he’d spent there with his daughter and son-in-law sailing around the Whitsundays was “still the best week of my life”. As my weekend away to ‘Hamo’ came to a close, I decided it wasn’t the best weekend I’d ever had but I think on my return with my family in tow, it could very well be.

Terribly overrated and overinflated prices for everything, terribly pretentious – went with husband and two kids expecting paradise – don’t waste your money – choose Long Island or Hook Island instead or holiday in Bali or Fiji and support tourism in these poorer countries.

Unfortunately I have to agree with you anon. I live a mere four hour drive from Shute Harbour, where you catch the ferry across to the islands, and it was cheaper for our family of four to go to Fiji for a week than it was for us to go to the Whitsundays for a long weekend. Sad for Aussie tourism, but true.

Complete disagree! Hamilton Island is truly paradise on earth, I went for the first time last year and can’t wait to go back – maybe the people who have a negative ‘over rated’ view on it, have too high expectation when they go?

I didn’t really know what to expect, but once I got there I didn’t want to leave.

There’s so much to do and it is probably the most beautiful place on earth. The amount of money I spent was less than my return airfare to Europe. For those reading the negative comments and have never been, go for yourself and see what you think!

If money is an issue, then stay at airlie beach and explore in day trips. poor old airlie is really struggling since losing the euro backpacker market and is cheap, on the door step of this gorgeous region and you’ll be supporting aussie operators at the same time.

Trying to work out whether this trip was a freebie or not. For obvious reasons journalists disclose this infiormation although I appreciate that media rules don’t apply to websites. It would be helpful if future travel articles could be clear on this – I’m assuming it was paid for by Hamilton
island but can’t find anything to clarify this one way or another.

We went to HI in the 90s with our kids. We paid extra for the accommodation so that we would have two rooms and a kitchenette. That way we only had to have 1-2 meals out. We bought in food supplies from the mainland, as you are a captive audience, so to speak once there. Food at the restaurants was expensive, but we weren’t surprised. Don’t know what’s changed but we didn’t have anything to complain about, comparing it to international standards. The kids loved the kids club too.
To be quite honest, if I was going to go os to an island I’d go back to Hawaii anyway, otherwise I’m happy to see far away parts of our country. I’d love to see cape York and Broome.

Yup, we Queenslanders are so blessed with beautiful places to holiday.

Sadly, our minister for Tourism is in the papers today holidaying in the Maldives (also very pretty) while she urges the peasants to holiday at home. Maybe she doesn’t know about local rates.

Anyway, with my lack of job security and no payrise for at least 3 years, we won’t be holidaying anywhere soon. Thank goodness for day trips is all I can say or we’ll have cabin fever….

I live in The Whitsundays and prior to moving here holidayed on Hamo a couple of times. It is beautiful but don’t be put off by the so-called celebs and beautiful people who *might* happen to be holidaying there as well. Some do, but that is not the norm and I would say its main attraction is that it is family friendly, not that I had kids along with me on my holidays. Daydream Island is also great for kids (and it’s for sale at the moment if any one is interested?) However, as people have stated, it is true, very expensive but everything about The Whitsundays is expensive, and we are not doing ourselves any favours by ripping off the public. Just because people are on holidays, it shouldn’t be the case that they pay through the nose for everything. We have a family business which my youngest son started where we look after boats at the marinas and the policy is that just because we look after vessels worth millions of dollars it doesn’t mean that we are going charge like wounded bulls for our services. Give it a try, if only once and for the beauty of it and The Whitsundays generally.

Have not been to HI since the 90s, it was nice but no better than any other Aussue beach and these days most forums and travel reviews are negative, unless on a PR hosted tour as per this writer. Kiss me Ketut!!! B is for Bali in my view. Amazing service, beautiful people and culture, if you’re going to get on a plane might as well take your passport!

I hate Bali. Holidaying in Bali while everyone is poor and desperate is not my idea of fun.

I couldn’t agree more Amandarose. Bali is beyond awful. My husband and I went there a few years ago and hated every minute (and we were staying in 5 star resorts). The people are sneaky, desperate, rude and they hassle you non stop when you leave your hotel and venture out on the streets. the whole place is dirty and smelly. Yuck!!!!

Have also been to Fiji, totally different story. The people are divine, the service somewhat slow but very friendly. We were on one of the smaller islands and couldn’t fault it. Avoid Bali, go to Fiji, you won’t be disappointed.

Fiji is boring with a capital B. I really don’t understand why so many people go there, only to be holed up in their resort. Why not just go to Queensland? Personally, I also much prefer Bali. The people are lovely, the culture is fascinating and there is heaps to do (culturally, shopping, eating out etc). Most people in Bali are not poor and desperate at all but live relatively wealthy lives compared to most of their Indonesian counterparts. It just depends on where you stay, Kuta should be avoided at all costs.

I would like to take our family to HI for a holiday, but sooo much cheaper to take them to Bali or Penang or Lombok. We go to Bali twice a year, take suitcases full of clothes, sports and school stuff to take to the orphanages. Our Kids know how lucky they are, they wouldn’t be going through their books and toys before a trip to qld that’s for sure. Jmo, but qld is overrated.

I live in Mackay – 1.5 hrs from Airlie Beach where most of the Hamilton Island transfers occur. After researching a few holiday destinations I was surprised to find that it was cheaper for myself, husband and 2 small children to go to Fiji, Bali and New Zealand than it was to go to Hamilton Island. Not only was it cheaper to travel internationally, it was cheaper by half or more. Whilst travel to and from Islands is relatively cheap, accommodation is not. Upon mentioning this to a local travel agent, she informed me that my family would qualify for “local rates”. These have been set up to encourage last minute or mid-week travellers coming from the Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday region. It’s a great idea in theory but I have yet to be able to get the very heavily discounted rates at the time when we are free to go.

      Nail. on. head.
Average hotel price I paid in Australia 2011 & 2012: $170-200 per night.
Lake Como 2011, room with a view directly of the lake, breakfast included: $89 per night.

As others have mentioned below, I found Hamilton Island quite expensive. Everything is owned by the Oatley family, hence pretty much the only wine available in each and every establishment is Wild Oats! – which isn’t particularly to my liking. The only reason I’d go back to stay at Hamilton Island is if I was staying at Qualia. That place is divine. The rest….meh.

I visited Hamilton Island about a year ago. The scenery is really stunning and there are some lovely restaurants in the marina precinct. But the island and its resorts suffer from a lack of competition making it expensive.
Check in to cocktail in 7 minutes? Rubbish! And don’t try to find a meal if you arrive on an afternoon flight. Nothing is available at the hotel. Breakfast was a poor show too with uncooked eggs and broken coffee machines.
It’s pretty obvious that the writer was on a showcase and I imagine there was not much time to explore on her own or she might have seen what parts of the island resort are really like for visitors. Unless you can afford the lovely qualia or a private villa, forget Hamilton Island.

Don’t be sucked in. Hamilton Island is expensive, the accommodation is basic, the service the worst I’ve encountered anywhere and quite frankly it’s boring!

Fiji is a much better option! In Australia try Port Douglas or for a really relaxed family holiday, Mission Beach.

So expensive Anon! Every year or so we plan a family holiday, we really wanted to plan a tropical holiday somewhere in Australia and looked into all the Queensland islands and it ended up cheaper to go to Fiji- 10 nights, all meals, flights, transfers and in NSW school holidays for just over $4000. The same deal in Australia was at least twice that. So unfortunately our money either ends up in Fiji or Thailand………

      • Mrs M, have you checked out Port Douglas? I usually get a return flight from Sydney for $400 with a week in an apartment – my last stay was $180 per night although that was a one bedroom. It’s beautiful, tropical, and all the things you could want. One downside is that the tours to the Great Barrier Reef are a bit expensive and would add up for a family.
