Sometimes you have lots of little things you want to write about, but no logical way to string them together, so you create an odd post with lot of little tidbits in it.
This is one of those posts.
1. Make-up brushes.
Just on the topic of makeup brushes, (ssshh) a lot of you have asked HOW to clean your makeup brushes, which is a great question (and crucial in order to prolong the life of your probably-rather-pricey brushes, get the best possible coverage/use, and avoid them growing bacteria and creating breakouts). So here’s how it’s done:
1. Wet your brush under the tap, using warm water
2. Drip a pea amount of baby shampoo onto the brush
3. Gently, so as not to make your brush all wonky donkey/out of shape, massage the brush gently onto the palm of your hand, til there is a good lather. Do not get water or shampoo in/on the metal bit! Brush hair only, thank you
4. Rinse the brush in warm water so thoroughly that you might die of boredom
5. Gently blot your brushes on a towel, being WILDLY OBSESSIVE about not disturbing their natural shape or fanning them out
6. Lay them flat on a towel overnight, or even better, on the edge of a sink or windowsill so the brushes are able to air dry thoroughly.
As for how often, you gotta do it at LEAST monthly. But spot clean them too, either by wiping the brush a few times on a Wet One to clean the colour/product off the brush, (great if you’re going to use a light shadow after a dark one, or a powder after a cream) or a little more thoroughly with a spray/liquid brush cleaner and then wiping the residue off with a tissue until it’s clean. This will refresh their fluffiness, and get rid of any bacteria. Which is what you want.
2. Nail polish.
…. Mecca has very very very very lovely nude-pink-flesh nail polish (extremely on trend but perfectly classic) – Rosaline - which has become my new This Is My Favouite Polish and I Will Never, Ever Wear Any Other Colour on My Nails Again, Colour, which is complete hyperbole obviously, but that shouldn’t take anything away from how great a colour it is.
The perfect blend of almondy-nude-soft pink. Lasts well, too. Fun fact: The dame who introduced me to this shade, grand priestess of Omnilux and facials, Jocelyn Petroni, does Miranda Kerr‘s nails, and Rosaline is her pick of the bunch too. So, you know, we’re essentially bezzies.
3. Primer.
… Primer was created to keep your makeup in place, for longer. But I also use mine (DermaQuest DermaPerfection Primer – which is a velvety, silicone style texture) to plump up and fill in my undereye crinkles, mixing a little with my cream concealer (MAC) and dabbing it on after my foundation. You can also touch up in the afternoon with just the primer as a kind of face-refreshing, line-reducing spac filler.
4. Invisalign.
… I finished my dingin’ Invisalign! I did my six months (mine was Invisalign Lite, which is corrective but also preventative) and finally had my attachers removed from my teeth and no longer need to wear my trays 22 hours a day. (I now only wear them at night; it blows me away how much my teeth move even in one day.) My teeth are crazy straight now. Both top and bottom.
I feel a bit bad that I’m not hosting a quiz show, it seems wasteful. My overbite is much smaller. My teeth aren’t able to grind like they used to. And now, now I won’t need adult braces. (Cute as they are.) I recommend it, I recommend it, I recommend it.
It’s extremely subtle – no one even knew I had Invisalign until I was disgusting and removed my trays at the table before eating - and it’s very effective. My tooth doctor, Dr Angelo Lazaris (http://www.sydneycosmeticdentist.com/) is excellent. He’s clever, he’s fun and he is kind enough not to make me wear a wire to keep my bottom teeth in line.

Zoe, just love the sunglasses you’re wearing in the top photo of you. Struggle to find glasses that fit my face well and they look so great on you, would be interested to know what brand they are. Thanks

Err, and this is important??? wow girls, you need to get out more!

I have also been to see the simply gorgeous and sweet and clever Jocelyn Petroni after reading Zoe raving about Omnilux treatments in her book and in previous posts. I signed up for a series of them and they were heavenly. Each week I would race from my stressy job to sit in front of the red light for what felt like 20 minutes in Hawaii. And my skin looked great too. I had my nails done during one of my sessions and Jocelyn introduced me to another lovely Mecca colour- perdita. It is a really soft blue and so pretty even my butcher commented on it! Thank you, Zoe, for introducing me to Omnilux and Jocelyn. The money I spent on my weekly 20mins in Hawaii is being saved because I no longer feel the need to wear makeup!!
Ps I have no affiliation with Omnilux or jocelyn, I promise. Just a huge fan!!!

Correction! The Mecca colour I used was Phrynia. So pretty.

Hi Zoe, Love your posts, at 30 yrs of age I have just started ‘getting into’ skin care and make up.
Would be great if you could do a post for us fair skinned/ red hair/ freckles girls.
Whenever I go to by make up I have trouble finding foundation that is light enough plus the make up girls always want to put bronzer on me. I am happy with my white skin and dont feel the need to tan/bronze myself.
I would like to know how to compliment my white skin and strawberry hair, not change it!

Zoe, thank you for the makeup brush tip! I washed my Kabuki brush with baby shampoo a couple of weeks ago as it was all clogged; I’ve been worried ever since that, even though it feels amazing and works as if it was brand new, I’d somehow started it on a slow path to destruction. I’m going to go wash all my other brushes now! My concealer brush is horrible
loading...
My secret make up weapon is Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector . It literally hides blemishes and brightens my face. I actually use it in place of foundation and just a touch of concealer under my eyes. PLUS its not heavy on my skin and doesn’t make me feel like I have cake it on.
loading...
Zoeeee! What lipstick/gloss are you wearing in the photo at the top of the article?! It’s gorgeous!

Can someone suggest a good rosecea cream? I used to have mild rosecea but it seems to have worsened with pregnancy. Am hoping it will calm a little after my hormones settle but need help until then!
loading...
I use Steam Cream on mine. It’s just a moisturiser but it’s natural and seems to work pretty well.

Thanks!

Go see your GP and get an antibiotic cream. Even though rosacea isn’t thought to have a bacterial cause, topical antibiotics have been proven to have great results. Also, get yourself some pH-balanced skincare, especially cleanser and moisturiser. Look for gentle/sensitive or anti-inflammatory products. I like Dermaquest Gentle Skin Cleanser and Anti-Inflammatory cream. Their Antioxidant Soothing Serum is great too – it has copper for soothing/healing, and antioxidants to prevent free radical damage caused by chronic inflammation.
But every prescriptive skincare brand should have a solution. Go and see a skincare therapist who can diagnose your problem as rosacea and put together a routine for you.

As well as the monthly washing of makeup brushes, never hold on to your eye makeup for longer than 6 months. After that you run the risk of attracting nasties like conjunctivitis.
loading...
Wow, I must have been lucky then. I wear makeup so infrequently that if I were to throw it away as often as six monthly I wouldn’t be able to afford it at all and all that money wasted. Some of my eye makeup is over ten years old (some even older) and I have never got conjunctivitis from it – touch wood!

Quick tip if anyone is washing their brushes and wants to hold the shape, wrapping a square of toilet paper around the brush head does wonders. I just leave them to dry at the edge of a table overnight and presto!

i am finally ready to invest in my first designer item, i want to get a fabulous luxe lippy. as a struggling uni student i want to spend my limited $$$ wisely. any recommendations on the best designer lipsticks? im thinking the chanel rouge hydrating lipstick looks good, anyone used it? or tom ford perhaps?
loading...
I’d suggest going to the department stores and maybe asking for samples of ones that you’re interested in… that way you can see which one is best for you.
loading...
Don’t waste your money on a super expensive lippy. They are all made in the same factory anyway & cost about $1…. Go for a lovely colour in a cheaper brand (rimmel/maybelline/etc) & spend the money on what you really need. I never splurge on cosmetics & I still look fab.
loading...
If you want to splurge on a high end lipstick you DEFINITELY should. Sometimes nothing makes me feel better after a long day at work than putting a Chanel lipstick out before I go home. It depends on your colouring as to the shade, but Tom Ford make really wearable but gorgeous colours. Chanel anything is amazing but personally I like the rouge coco shades (Boy is my favourite) and Shu Uemura have some lovely formulas too.
loading...
Try the body shop, their products are beautiful & they aren’t tested on animals
loading...
Oooh, Tom Ford lipsticks are wonderfully fancy and lovely, Ella. Ditto Chanel Rouge Allure or the marvellous and clever tint/balm/gloss, YSL Glossy Stain.

awesome! thanks zoe

I love these posts. I’m a massive product whore and have come across some great products via Zoe’s posts and the comments too
I’m in bed with the flu while all my friends are out having dinner by the ocean. Thank god for MM given the rot on TV on a Friday night.

I love the beauty blender sponge zoe recommended awhile back. It gives a fabulous airbrushed look even with my cheap revlon foundation. Does anyone know if you clean it in the same way as a brush?
On another note, I also bought the della diego semi-permanent mascara zoe mentioned because I was hoping to save time applying mascara every day but it’s not really working. It smudges everywhere when I apply it and I wake up with panda eyes. It didn’t come with instructions….anyone got any tips for making it last? And how do you get mascara on the tops of your top lashes without getting it everywhere? I don’t like mascara on my bottom lashes.
loading...
I get mascara all over my eyelids when I put it on in the morning. I use a cotton bud dipped in moisturiser to remove it.
loading...
Hi Kate, I’m in the US and I ordered the beauty blender sponge from Sephora…. omg it is the best! I LOVE it! I got the cleaner that goes with it and I can even use that to clean my makeup brushes.
I have read on a few websites that people use baby shampoo to clean it like brushes.

I’m sorry if this has been asked before but are there any good creams out there for people who perspire a lot? I’m dark skinned and I perspire a truckload in summer, mostly on my face and neck and I find it impossible to wear sunscreen. Until recently I didn’t use any product at all for my face (I know, I know) and I’ve been lucky to have generally ok skin. But I am worried about sun exposure and its effects. I saw some recommendations for the Nivea Light face sunblock and while it was ok on most days, once the temperature went above 24 degrees, it almost melted off.
Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated!
loading...
If you’re dark skinned, I honestly don’t know if you’d need sunblock, the melanin in your skin would naturally protect a lot of the sun’s rays. Happy to be corrected if I’m wrong. But as to the sweating issue, I’m really not sure…
loading...
that is a myth . Dark skinned people do need sunblock too if sun baking etc. they get sunburnt too, it just doesn’t show up .
loading...
Ah Msprazza, that sucks. Maybe try going to Myer and asking around at the makeup-counters there? Might be a bit pricey, but worth it to protect your skin. I put lots of powder on when it’s hot, because it helps to soak up sweat and stops everything from slipping around. My other suggestion is to invest in some gorgeous sunhats and glasses. Then at least if you will be outside for a long time you know you will have a bit of protection. Plus I think a sunhat looks super elegant.
loading...
Hi everyone, thanks for your ideas. Ellie, I was thinking the sunhat route too, I feel like a big swoopy sun hat a la Catwoman in the Dark Knight Rises would look nice. Do you just use talcum powder or something? I might try a little bit, although I’m a bit worried with my skin tone I might look like I dipped my face in flour

Try invisible zinc? It seems to cling really well. I’m not sure how it would go colour-wise, I am very fair and the lightest one is ok but probably a bit dark on me.
loading...
Ok going to sound really noob here but I always thought zinc was mostly for the nose? Am I still stuck on those 80s ads where people had yellow noses?
loading...
Haha I used to love the coloured zinc! Invisible zinc is literally invisible and is used all over your face and under make up. It’s also a moisturizer and tint, you can get different colours too (e.g. I have light as I am pasty). I’ve used mine for 3 weeks and loving it! You can get it from woolworths

Try the neutrogena sunscreens – they’ve got some that give a matte finish, are sweatproof and waterproof. Sunscreens usually make me look really oily but the neutrogena one is great.
loading...
Becca Brush Soap is amazing. It gets even my most dense brushes clean so fast, whereas baby shampoo took forever. It’s pretty pricey but I wash over a dozen brushes every week and it lasts me a few months.
Great results with Invisalign Zoe!

a lot of really good primers are silicon- based, and the BOMB, but here’s another primer suggestion, that I’m reliably informed (by other beauty bloggers, and a friend) is the total BOMB DIGGITY……though I totally hesitate to do it myself…just…cos….
lube. silicon based lube is apparently the best ever primer…yup, you’re welcome!
loading...
Chafing cream also works apparently.

Mylanta is also a great primer if you have oily skin.

OMG Zoe – I just went to Mecca on my lunch break to buy this stunning nail colour and walked out an hour and a half later with a full face of make up and $220 of prodz! Oops!!
loading...
Ooh, I hear you. I just logged on to my online mecca account (I buy at online and instore) and discovered, courtesy of the “Mecca Loop” program that they have that I’ve spent $2000 in the last 12 months at Mecca. I very nearly passed out. In my defence, I have had shockingly dodgy skin in the last 12 months so needed a complete overhaul (my skin is now spotless and all glowy) and I also buy lots of birthday gifts from Mecca.

I’d like to ask Zoe what lippy she is wearing in the photo at the top of the article as I LOVE it and find this shade of pink hard to get right.
P.S. Zoe – thanks for all your lovely tips

i want to know is there any special cream/cleanser beauty trip out there to minimize pores??

Check out Dr Brandt’s range of ‘no more pores’ products from Mecca – they are great!

Benefit The Porefessional is fabulous to use on the nose and cheeks.

does anyone know of a concealer for brown age spots. I have a few and normal foundation wont cover them. Also , any recommendations for a product to cover a ruddy complexion. I’m olive skin but have a reddish undertone .
loading...
Not a concealer but have you tried Meladerm to fade them? It’s available on line at civant.com
loading...
I would give the Clinique Even Better range a try – there’s skin care products in this range – which will help tackle the pigmentation – and there’s also specific foundation and a relatively new concealer designed to both treat and cover pigmentation. Maybe go to a Clinique counter and try some out? There’s heaps of brands that do products targeting pigmentation but Clinique kind of covers all bases with skincare and makeup – which makes it a one stop shop! Also make sure you’re vigilant with suncare – otherwise all the treatment of the pigmentation will be redundant. Good luck!
loading...
not a concealer, but have you tried IPL? Its not just for hair removal
I had some pigmentation, and IPL lifted the colour straight out in 1-2 sessions, so then I didn’t have anything that actually needed coverage – seriously! in a day or two, they went darker as it lifted out, and then just flaked away…miracle!
loading...
thanks girls, im going to try each of them, IPL sounds fantastic. I never thought of that for dark spots. Im very self conscious about them, silly I know because theyre only a few age spots…thanks again
loading...
I’m a beauty therapist and I would agree that you should definitely give IPL a try, or at least have a consultation for it. Your spots might not be suitable but it’s worth asking!!! Most salons/clinics are more than happy to have a look at your skin and do a thorough consult for free or a nominal fee (for their time).
Also…please please don’t use Clinique to work on your pigmentation. You’ll be trying forever. It’s just not high-powered enough to correct deep epidermal or dermal pigment. There’s a reason it can be sold by any old Joe Blow who isn’t trained in skin — it’s not concentrated enough to hurt you (therefore it’s not concentrated enough to create any real corrective change).
If I had a dollar for every client who had been using Clinique for years and only has so-so skin…well…I’d probably be out somewhere exciting on Saturday night instead of giving skincare advice on a blog.

This is the best thing ever! My hairdresser asked me if I had had a blow dry after using it!

I swear by it. It doesn’t actually give my hair that much volume, but it does make it smooth and bouncy. My hairdresser loves it!

About the teeth: I had braces when I was 14 (I’m 18 now) and I wear a wire on the back of my bottom teeth to keep them straight. It’s better than having two retainers! It’s only annoying when you eat things that can get stuck in the wire and you have to spend an hour making funny faces as you attempt to subtly fish them out with your tongue.
loading...
I’ve got those tooth wires too
They ain’t that bad hey! Except, as you say, for the occassional tricky snippet of corn or lettuce that wants to get a bit stuck. Nothing a toothbrush can’t fix.
I had retainers briefly and all I remember is that if you forgot them for one night, they hurt like hell the next night!
loading...
I have a wire behind my bottom teeth too! Had it put in after my braces came off 20 yrs ago! Best thing as my teeth are still straight and have not moved at all. My dentist has said it’s fine to keep it in, as long as I brush and floss properly.
loading...
The only problem I have with the wire is having to brush really well around it. I’ve had build of of calcium (or something, I forgot what the dentist called it) between the wires that had to be scraped off – and no matter how well I brush, it still keeps coming back. Biannual dentist trips to get it cleaned off are annoying!
loading...
Sounds like you need some Super Floss (www.oralb.com.au/products/superfloss/), it helps keep my wires clean. I have had the wires on top & bottom since I got my braces off when I was 14, they’re the best – my teeth haven’t moved! It is annoying when something gets caught in them though…

On primer: I just started using primer a few months ago. I bought the Nars one after booking at Mecca Maxima make up session.
I am using Nars ($52) and it is fantastic. I put my eye gel on, then moisturiser, then primer, then foundation. So smooth, so even. Ahhh.
Also – I recommend primer as a stand-alone if you are having a blemish-free day. Just pop some translucent power over it and away you go. Light and breezy skin. I will be experimenting with using a tinted moisturiser in summer over it as well.
Primer truly is a face changer. It’s a little hard to describe its exact effects – it’s a product that has to be tried and seen to be understood.
loading...
I am just getting into primer too. i am confused, are we supposed to use a different primer for ou r eyes than the face on? If so, what is a good eye primer ?
loading...
You know, I have never used an eye primer, so I can’t tell you how they work and if they’re worth it. Another reader may know more from experience.
I know Stila, Too Faced and Smashbox ones are popular and sell well. Perhaps visit Myer, David Jones or Mecca to try before you buy.
loading...
Napoleon do an eye cream primer combination. It’s a nice eye cream but I found no major difference between it and normal moisturiser then primer combo.
I love Zoe’s suggestion of mixing primer with concealer cream. I’m going to try this under my eyes.
loading...
Before I started using eye primer I was never able to have eyeshadow last longer than a couple of hours because it would crease. Now I can have shadow last all day with no signs of creasing. Apparently its a symptom of oily eyelids. I’ve been using Nars eye primer, haven’t tried any other brands.
loading...
Is this Mecca’s Rosaline, Zoe? I nicked the image off a blog! Naughty me.

Very pretty

Re nail polish, whats the general consensus on gel nail polish/shellac?
Amazingly long lasting nail polish or dry and damaging for your nails?
I got it done last weekend (in a fab bright red) and whilst I am loving how shiny and perfect they still are, I am a little worried about what it will do to the condition of my nails.
loading...
I have been getting shellac’d for about 4 or 5 months. I have it replaced after two weeks. I do 3 in a row then go bare for one or two weeks, then re-shellac all over again.
My nails actually seem stronger and better and smoother after doing shellac! I wouldn’t worry at all if I were you. It’s not like that bio-gel stuff from 10-12 years ago. We’ve come a long way. If you go bare like I do, and still feel a bit concerned, maybe get some cuticle and nail oil to rub it daily until you get re-shellac’d.
Red looks amazing in Shellac, so does a French or American manicure. I am the envy of my colleagues – well, my nails are.
Final advice: I go to a decent salon where they look after you – not a cheap and fast place where they don’t care too much. I am sure this makes a difference. It costs me $40, or $45 if I get French / American. A friend went to a cheap salon and it looked sloppily done (rushed).
loading...
I agree, Shellac is faaaabulous and it’s actually really protective on nails. IF REMOVED CORRECTLY it’s completely non damaging. If I want to grow my nails out, I just keep them Shellac’d and they come out beautiful and long and strong after a couple of weeks.
You just have to try not to peel the Shellac coating off because, as someone said earlier, you will take a bit of nail with it. The only exception to this is if the seal has been broken (eg if your nail breaks or if you use nail clippers to cut the end) and water seeps in underneath. They usually peel off gently. When I want to take Shellac off without acetone, I just cut my nails (with the Shellac still on) and then have a long warm bath. The Shellac usually peels off easily and gently.
loading...
I had shellac for a couple of months, but I didn’t like the removal method. Also I found it lifted sometimes which then made me want to peel it off which then damaged my nails because I took the top layer off with it. If it starts to lift i found that it got caught in my hair and drove me nuts. I have gone back to acrylics which last better for me. The polish still lasts 2 weeks and it’s $30.
I recommend pearl nails at Liverpool westfield.
loading...
On the removal of shellac… rather than soak your fingers in acetone, the place I go foils my fingernails! They get small balls of cotton wool, squirt some polish remover onto it, place them over my fingernails then have little foil squares they wrap around my fingertips. Warm towel on my lap to wrap over my hands. Hey presto about 7 minutes later shellac comes off like magic with a little nudge of the metal file thingo.
I recommend La Boutique Nails in Black Rock (Melbourne bayside suburb).
loading...
I have acrylic nails because I am a chronic nail biter. Can’t bite the acrylics, but don’t like that the nails are consistenly filed so if the acrylics are removed, even by soaking, the nails are weak.
Are the shellac nails strong enough to stop you biting them/
loading...
My random problem is mascara (and eyeliner).
It always ends up smeared under my eyes and over my eyelids within a couple of hours.
How can I stop this migration? Is there a mascara that stays put?
My tip:
I’ve found that as I get older my face looks better with less makeup.
Tinted moisturiser or BB cream instead of foundation gets stuck in my lines less.
loading...
Mirenesse mascara never ever smudges. Ever. You can sleep in it (not recommended though!) and it still stays put.
The reason is that it’s a tube mascara – it forms miniscule silicon-like tubes around individual lashes, which also means the tubes just slilde off in warm water, no remover required. I will never use anything else.
Also, Rimmel’s Exaggerate Waterproof Eye Definer does a pretty good job of staying put all day. I have to be meticulous about eye make-up which doesn’t move because of my contact lenses.
HTH
loading...
thanks Tara!
loading...
Ooh I’ll have to look into that. I have my favourites for most products but am yet to find a mascara I truly love.
loading...
You may find it’s not so much the mascara itself but your lashes are either too fine to hold a thick volumising mascara or they’re long and are brushing on your cheek once you’ve applied mascara
loading...
Hands down Kevyn Aucoin mascara $40. I ‘went there’ about two years ago and I can’t come back! It is a divine mascara; worth every cent.
It’s sold at Mecca Cosmetica (can you tell I love to shop there?!) and there’s a reason it is the number one best-selling lash or brow product at that store. Note: it’s almost always not out on the shopfloor on display – you have to ask for it. It’s a freakin’ cult! Join the cult Angelina Ballerina. http://www.meccacosmetica.com.au/shop/KevynAucoin/TheMascaraVolume/
loading...
Waterproof mascaras in general, will stay put better. I’ve also found that Benefit They’re Real def doesn’t budge! Other brands do the ‘tubing’ mascaras like Mirenesse do – there’s the Kevin Aucoin one mentioned by someone else, Becca The Ultimate (which I can vouch for is fantastic!) and also Clinique Lash Power – which I’m currently using and loving. I’m sure there’s others too – they’re just the ones I know myself! My mascara always smudges on my brow bone where my lashes hit, but I don’t have this issue with the mascaras I’ve mentioned.
loading...
l’oreal also do a ‘tube’ mascara – can’t remember the name, but it’s wine/white coloured tube
loading...
LASH PRIMER – I got Clinique’s one, really well priced, and haven’t had mascara drop off or smudge at all since (unless its the mascara getting old). I think its good for your lashes too, keeps them from becoming brittle.
loading...
Hi, I always had the same problem. I wear a tube mascara from Clinique and will never go back!
loading...
I concur on tubular mascara. I had this exact problem and have found a terrific combo of Clinique lash power tube mascara and Mac eyeliner gel means no more panda eyes for me!
loading...
Ha! I just signed in simply to say: I LOVE your name Tubular belle!
loading...
I have that exact same problem! The only one that has ever stayed put all day long (for me) is bobby brown celebration mascara. I often get comments on it too. Have been using it since ny eve and it’s still amazing!!!!
loading...
Zoe, I have the under eye dark circles – like really dark. They are the darkest of all the dark circles in the land. I’m reaalllly pale – so I have these massive things under my eyes that constantly get commented on if I go without concealer – but they’re still really bad with stuff on them.
What corrector/concealer should I be using? I’m still under 30, but have really dry skin? HALP ME! For the love of all that is controlled by commercial beauty products and cats on the internet!
loading...
Its a very extreme solution (and obviously I dont know your position on such things) but have you considered getting tear trough filler?
I had the same problem and the filler was awesome – nobody could tell what I had done and it just looked like I was well rested all the time.
otherwise I love my MAC concealer, pressed gently under the eye area.
loading...
Oh my gosh I am quite clueless – I have no idea what that is. Is it like silicone injections? Eeep! That is a bit more extreme than I am after. I know its a bit of a double standard, but I’m ok with putting artificial stuff ON my skin, but injections of some random stuff into my face is still something I couldn’t do. Also I hate needles! Also I’m sure that’s out of my price range.
I mean I’m ok with them lounging around at home, my partner doesn’t care etc. I would just like to mask them a bit better if I’m heading out to do something particularly fun or fancy!
loading...
I never knew such a treatment existed! Can you tell us more about it please?
loading...
Ok procrastination galore I just googled it, and one of the first things that pops up is that a tiny mistake when injecting fillers is that they can cause blindness!! Nope nopers nope nope nope! Sorry, I’d rather keep my scary tired looking eyes!
loading...
I find that a little hard to believe, seeing as they dont inject near the eyeball. My Dr injected the filler closer to the eye socket bone.
Or maybe its a different procedure.
loading...
Well there are a lot of arteries around that whole area (which are also responsible for the circles), and if they accidentally get it in one of them, it can be a major problem. I would rather not risk it, too scary!
loading...
I have the worst dark circles too and I’ve found that the best thing to cover them up was a Bobbi Brown correcter with my MAC Studio Fix concealer over top. I haven’t tried the Bobbi Brown concealer but I’ll probably try that next…
I’ve talked to a few people about it and apprently exercise in the morning is meant to help as well but I generally exercise in the afternoon so I couldn’t tell you if that’s worked for me.
loading...
A colleague of mine had this done and found the fillers disolved under one eye quicker than the other
loading...
i use YSL Touched Eclat. Works a treat. It brightens rather than being a thick mask.
loading...
I have the same extremely dark circles.
I use Bobbi Brown Corrector & Concealer (comes with concealer & powder to set it).
Best thing I ever bought!
loading...
Susan I have discovered a kind of cure for dark circles if you are pale, fake tan! It makes a huge difference with mine I use a tiny bit of the Ella Bache one mixed in with my night cream and I don’t even need to wear foundation the next day.
loading...
I must say I’m a bit sceptical, as the tone difference between my face and circles is gigantic, but I guess I’d have to try it out to know for sure. Though I’m not a fan of fake tan in general (smell, streaks etc), as I decided to embrace the pale! Maybe I also have to embrace the circles…

TOTALLY AGREE!
I have VERY dark circles, but you can only see them when I don’t have a full spray tan (including face). They start to appear on day 5 or 6 before my weekly spray tan – exactly the time when people start asking me if I am sick (ghostly white skin with black under eye circles).
Fake tan makes them disappear. Cheekbone fillers help too – if you can afford them.
Otherwise, get a referral from your GP to see a dermatologist or other skin specialist at at public hospital as an outpatient, bulk-billed to Medicare. They will recommend/prescribe creams. Your GP should also do some tests in case the dark circles are a sign of a serious health problem.

Great idea MEZ! I totally agree.
And night cream – you must have beautiful skin! I shall try that also

Try Benefit’s Lemon Aid corrector for dark circles. I have terrible ones too and this stuff really perks up your eyes and hides those nasty dark circles. I will never use anything else!
loading...
Susan have you tried erase paste by Benefit?
loading...
Never even heard of Benefit! I had a quick look online, seems to have very mixed reviews…gosh I just want it to be easy! I plan on just going into a department store soon, and getting all the counter ladies to show me what their stuff can do.

Yes! Yes! A thousand times yes!
I use Erase Paste for under my eyes, Boing for other spots on my face, Lemon Aid for my eye lids.
Or you can by the Confessions of a Concealaholic thing from Adore Beauty which has them all in there, plus something for pores.

I use Laura mercier cream concealer set with a little bit of powder and then with a highlighter triangle on top (learned that from Zoe’s book). Really looks amazing!
I use a Laura mercier highlighter pen thing for the triangle then blend with fingers.

I’m not really sure about the best way to mask the dark circles, but I do know that I used to have seriously bad dark circles under my eyes and it turned out they were caused by food intolerances/allergies, apparently it’s a common symptom (according to my doctor anyway), I know that now I don’t get them unless I eat a particular food, which is great, as if they’re not there I don’t have to worry about trying to cover them with concealer etc

Its funny, my mum said that a doctor took one look at my brother and I when we were little, and said they were due to allergies. My brother ended up developing epic hay fever in his teens, me…not so much. What were you intolerant to and how do you find out?..I don’t feel intolerant to food…are you going to say gluten? I might rather not know!

I have recently realised that I get really bad eye circles and puffiness when I eat salty foods (probably obvious but it has only just started happening) and drink red wine. SO sad because it is the only alcohol that I like

Oooh. A Pica Pica post.
Love it. And I had heaps of random and unrelated questions of which I can only remember one.
Foundations.
I recently have been using a MAC foundation after hearing so many rave reviews and it’s dreadful. It slides around on my skin (with or without primer). And my skin is not happy…and is revolting (in the French revolution way as well as the awful way).
I have fair sensitive skin at the young end of mature age.
Has anyone else had this problem with MAC?
Any suggestion for what I can use?
loading...
Which foundation? I bought the face and body foundation from MAC and it slid all over my skin and the coverage was way thinner than even tinted moisturizer. I haven’t tried any others of theirs. I use Napoleon Sheer Genius and love it to bits!
loading...
You can get a heavier coverage with face and body by rubbing it onto your face or between your fingers for 20 seconds or so. Its really weird but the more you play with it the thicker it gets and once its thick you can just pat it on to where you need the coverage

Which MAC foundation are you using? I’m fair, sensitive mid-30s and the MAC Matchmaster Foundation with MAC Primer are my holy-grail of foundations (and I think I tried nearly everything out there during my 20s!!). It’s not as heavy as the standard MAC foundation -so I find it is much better for my sensitive skin. A tip I was given is that you must only use one pump of the primer and smooth this over your entire face – if you spread it on any thicker, it has the opposite effect

It’s the Mineralize foundation in a compact. That’s what they recommended for me.
loading...
I haven’t tried that one – have never had much success with mineral powder foundations
loading...
Its a wet foundation. But it streaks like crazy.

Head to Mecca Cosmetica. They stock a huge range of foundations – I’ve loved all of the ones I’ve tried and have given up on MAC which I think is suitable for 20 year old skin only!

I will have to go. I recently found one relatively close.
Now I just need to find a few hours for myself so i can go and browse.
I did buy a beautiful Philosophy treatment that is devine. I think it is this one

But I will go and try the foundations.

I LOVE my YSL foundation. Super smooth, glides on easily and smells nice!
I use the Teint Resist and find its a good coverage without being too heavy or ageing.

I use Korres ginger and vitamins foundation $55.95. I use Nars primer underneath it. It looks light and natural, and gives a lovely even tone. http://www.meccacosmetica.com.au/shop/Korres/GingerAndVitaminsLightweightFoundationSPF10/ They have a few other foundations for different skin types.
See my other comment posted below for brand information.

Sounds lovely.
I have heard of Korres before. And I’am really trying to keep to the more natural types.
Thanks for all the input everyone who has replied!

Korres is stocked on asos.com for a trillionth of the price too.

Michelle Phan has a good tip for washing make up brushes. YouTube it! It’s essentially using anti bacterial washing detergent and olive oil together – shampoo doesn’t kill the bacteria. I’ve found the make up comes off easier too.
loading...
She also has a YouTube clip showing how to make your own pore strips using a mixture of gelatine and milk.
loading...
Also instead of buying expensive cleaning sprays, use isopropyl alcohol. That’s the main ingredient in the spray. It’s $10 a bottle in price line/pharmacy.
loading...
Isopropyl is even cheaper at Bunnings!

Bunnings next time then. thanks for that

Or Dick Smith.
Or Kmart or Big W.

Love this info Zoe!
I am currently loving my stippling brush to death as it makes my foundation looks so much more airbrushed than a normal foundation one, no streaks yay!
I wash it with shampoo after every use or I find it doesn’t work nearly as well when it isn’t fluffy and clean.
Thanks for the under eye crinkle advice. I am currently using cover girl/Olay concealer under my eyes but find it goes a bit cakey and sits in the crinkles making them more obvious. Any recommendations of a good under eye concealer that won’t do that? I just turned 30, I need all the help I can get as these are my only wrinkles at this point. Loving Napoleon Primer, makes my nose look poreless.
Your teeth look FAB! Do you have them cosmetically whitened? If so, can you recommend a product? Thanks x

Korres wild rose concealer is pretty good $34.95 http://www.meccacosmetica.com.au/shop/Korres/WildRoseConcealer/

I’m pretty sure Zoe has mentioned she used Zoom whitening (and had it done at the dentist)

+1 to Korres. I use Korres milk protein foaming cleanser and love it.

Laura Mercier concealer is great. I bought it after Zoe’s previous post on how to deal with under eye cirlces. Look back over some of Zoe’s previous posts. Should have all the answers:-)
