I used to love looking at high-fashion in magazines, but nowadays, when I’m flicking through the fashion pages of the papers on a Sunday or scanning fashion websites, what I love to see is the people who have been snapped in the street in their everyday wear. They’re so clever.
Welcome to a brand new edition to the style side of Mamamia. Every week we’ll give you 50 amazing street style looks from around the world. Enjoy, take notes, and feel free to add pictures of your own street style below!

I’d love to see some pics of cycle chic, there are a few Aussie sites including Sydney Cycle Chic and Melbourne Cycle Chic which do this, along with others here.

I recently set up a photo booth at occupyMelbourne focusing on the people involved and soon realized that the photo collection showed an eclectic mix of fashion – Melbourne street style! http://wp.me/plneg-jL

Why do they all look like models?
Boring and defeats the purpose of street style. We could all look at mags if we wanted to see models in clothes that would never look the same on the average woman.
Put relatable people or don’t bother, I say.

My favourite would have to be the lady on the bike in NYC – courtesy of Advanced Style! Effortless, timeless chic.
loading...
This is very close to really cool, well it is cool, but more like the old chick on the bike and the non obvious model ones (nb:all wearing ankle boots! haha).

I may be in the minority here but I have to be honest and say I loved your gallery and have no desire whatsoever to see “real” (whatever that means) women. If I want to see what “real” i.e. overweight women are wearing I can just step outside, they are all around me so why do I need to look at their pictures on the net? To me, it is so much more interesting to look at what young beautiful thin women are wearing.
Also I am not sure what some of the others are complaining about when they say they want to see regular sized women. I don’t see anyone here who looks like they might have an eating disorder, they all look regular to me but clearly that must be subjective.
loading...
yes it must be subjective..
maybe people are ‘complaining’ that the majority of the women in these pictures seem to look like ‘young beautiful thin’ “models”..
not your average every day looking woman.
i didnt realise that ‘real’ women meant overweight??
maybe something more than a size 8 would be considered ‘real’??
or would that be ‘i.e overweight’ to you?
loading...
I agree, so much more interesting to look at beautiful people than real people. I am not sure what a regular person is supposed to look like but none of these women seem irregular to me. I don’t know why but I don’t find it interesting to look at average every day women, I personally wouldn’t look at the pictures if they were every day people, but obviously there seems to be a demand for it from others.
loading...
I notice you have stuck rigidly to the rule “only skinny people are worth photographing”
No one bigger than a size 8 could possibly be interesting.
Shame on you
loading...
Where are the regularly sized women? The ones who aren’t stick thin? I’d like to see some street style of them, please. Shouldn’t that be part of the joy of looking at street style anyway?

This is a lovely idea, I have been missing a lot of the fashion you guys used to post about, but just a thought – pulling images from these already popular sites and blogs means that for a lot of us these pics are just a re-cap of stuff we have seen elsewhere. There are lots of talented blogger/street fashion photographers in Aus, would you ever consider putting something together for just Mamamia? You know, mamamia street style! Maybe somewhere in between mom filter (another site that features Mum’s with style) and the sartorialist/street peeper. It would be great to have some fashion content that was really relevant and accessible for all of your readers. Nothing inspires me more than seeing a Mum in the park looking really smart or when I catch up with my friend and see her with a new work outfit!
Some local fashion blogs I love are garrypeppervintage and zanita zanita – two sydney based model/photographers who take photos of the cool looks they put together every day! Inspiration a plenty!
Anyway, there is my two cents for today. Keep the fashion stuff coming I say!
loading...
I agree!
loading...
Cool idea! Not sure if it’s because I’m on an iPad but none of the via links work. Would be great to link back to the blogs & sites where you find these shots to see more.
loading...
Yep not working on mine either.
loading...
I noticed that only 3 of the 51 were on women over, say 35. Please, please can we include piccies of women a bit older. We can still look good too!
loading...
The Advanced Style site is directed at older women and is fabulous for the diversity of women it presents.

You want advise about style ?
Don’t ever miss “Fashion Police” on E. Total hilarity, thinly disguised venom and barbed wit aimed at those who deserve it most…celebrities and their egos.
Joan Rivers is God !
loading...
Totally! She’s hilarious and so uberbitchy! I love it!
loading...
Oh how I love fashion police!
loading...
I second that, she is God and so hilarious!
loading...
I love how creative Aussie’s are!
“Street style in Sydney by Sydney Street Style” – bahahaha!

Here’s one of street style in the US- with curvy ladies.
http://themanfattanproject.tumblr.com/
loading...
I dunno, there’s an awful number of girls wearing leggings as pants in that blog… That’s not street style, that’s street vomit-in-my-hat.
loading...
lol!
loading...
The majority of people in these images look great – for sure. But what it really shows me is that if you are super tall and super skinny, you can pretty much wear anything and look awesome. Nothing new there!
loading...
Yep, if you put someone more ‘voluptuous’ in any of those clothes they would look RIDICULOUS!
loading...
My point exactly!
loading...
Love the concept, but would love it more if it included more non models in non designer (which I can’t afford and also would look stupid in)
loading...
how do you know its designer wear…..you will be suprised to find that what some of those girls are wearing are from H&M, Zara… TopShop…mainstreet wear..
loading...
Definitely need some more “real” street fashion in there. You can pick the models doing a shoot in a busy street quite easily as opposed to those just doing their everyday thing.
That or there has been a huge increase the proportion of the population worldwide with legs up to their armpits.
loading...
Love this. Makes me want to go to Paris again.
loading...
Lucy, I loved the gallery!! I actually picked up ideas for outfits from some of them. So much better looking at real life people. xx
loading...
Guys – love the idea of more Aussie pix. What are some good Australian street-style blogs?
loading...
Hi Mia, http://www.businesschic.com.au has some local “on the street” style. Though I’m personally quite a fan of The Sartorialist I must say
loading...
Don’t necessarily need someone else’s stuff. Maybe time to hire some photographers
take an excursion out of the office or use the MM network to send or post some pics (as Lucy originally suggested).
I’ve seen a group on Facebook people comment on is Fashion Critical by DLT – but it’s not really street style – more mockery.

Jessie from Perth does some lovely OOTD posts http://www.thevelvetbow.com

Thanks for sharing! Glad to find something from Perth.

oops…I forgot to mention ladymelbourne.com.au
loading...

loading...

Although I love these types of photos in terms of aesthetics, I have issues with the whole ‘street style’ thing for several reasons. Usually it’s because this theme is somewhat polarized. Example:
– The Sartorialist and Garance Dore, for example, seem somewhat contrived. They all look rather similar, to be honest. Not only that, I think a lot of the women are models, and most are wearing unattainable Hermes, Chanel etc. It’s not your average ‘wow-that-woman-looks-amazing’ walking down the street. It’s ‘wow, that woman is a model and has pretty, expensive shoes on’.
– When it’s ‘street style’ in newspapers, magazines, they generally look like disheveled messes. They look like a trend/Vinnies bomb exploded all over them. Just because everything in their outfit is from Savers doesn’t mean they look good. Similar to ‘just because it’s vintage doesn’t mean it’s good’.
That being said, I adore when they have older, amazingly-dressed people in street style. I love when people age and still put rollers in their hair, or wear bow ties, or lovely stockings. I hope I’m like that. But not likely…
loading...
Bahahaha, I laughed so hard at this comment! Soooo true! We have an intern that dresses like she’s shopped at Vinnies/Savers and I know she’s painfully cool (she really is) but I just don’t get it!
loading...
I couldn’t agree more, I have always hated that Vinnies/Olsen twins look and can’t believe someone actually considers that to be stylish and cool. Sorry but no, looking like you haven’t washed your hair in weeks and like you picked your clothes out of a garbage can doesn’t make you look cool, just try hard.

My mum has the most fun shrieking at what people are wearing in street siren in M in the Sunday Age, especially when they have wanky jobs or try to cover up the fact they are 20 and work in retail (there is nothing wrong with working in retail at 20, you’re probably studying – just own it!)
Of course then I get to have fun laughing at my mum’s incredulous outbursts. “oh I got my shoes from a vintage shop in Paris! Well la di da! What a wanker.” She’s a classic.
loading...
Yeah, if they asked me, I’d be like ‘entire outfit by Target’. Don’t get me wrong – I look awesome – but my clothes are totally from Target.
loading...
Omg I do this every time I open MX and seriously gag when I read the opshop cments Chanel vintage brooch in a little shop off the piazza navona Roma. Which is code for 50c at the local garage sale. Or when they are super young, unemployed n have designer gear on! I love when they say stuff like I think blah blah suits me and I think no it doesn’t. That’s why you can be running an hour late and I’m happy as Larry checking out people. If you want a pic of yourself published in the fashion section of the paper get ready to be ridiculed. Another fav is Fernando frissoni, amazing designer, but seriously never interviews anyone in the weekend paper that’s outside the eastern suburbs! Or you can tell he at some cool party where everyone is so damn effortlessly cool…
loading...
I’d be joining your mum too. What did she think of the girl this weekend? I thought it was fabulous proof that money can buy labels, but not style.
loading...
The style section in Sunday SMH paper actually included some homeless guy in the style section….. (?!)
loading...
I love the Satorialist. One of my favourite websites (aside from Mamamia of course!).
loading...
god i wish i was fashionable!!!
(or at the very least lived in Paris)
loading...
What great inspiration Lucy! It’s also fantastic not to have to go to a gazillion websites – you’ve captured the best from around the world!
I love Australian style… would love to see more what people are wearing around the country. Fox in Flats blog does this quite well. Would also like to know your take on the fashion at the moment – and maybe what you are wearing today… you look pretty cool too!
loading...
Wow thanks Blaser! That’s awesome you’d think of Fox in Flats
There’s a section on site called ‘Playground Style’ where we showcase mums who are rockin’ the suburbs. http://www.foxinflats.com.au/category/style-inspiration/playground-style/
Mums can get a bad rap for looking uncool, but when you take a look around there are so many women out there who look brilliant. It’s nice to be able to showcase them and also demonstrate that you don’t have to have model proportions, or be really young to still have great style.
Cheers!
Andrea
loading...
Totally agree – next week we shall include some Fox In Flats pics! They’re terrific.
loading...
Yes, love this!!
loading...
Whoo hoo! Thanks Mia
loading...
Great! I actually thought Andrea might have guessed for this post. Would be great to see Aussie women
Love foxinflats!
loading...
I love your site! I am bookmarking now..
loading...
More pics of well dressend women over 40 please, and perhaps expand the tall thin woman stereotype to include beautiful women of all shapes and sizes, thank you.
loading...
I love street style, particularly model street style. What I hate is the street style….’section’? (what would I call it? It’s half a page)in the Sun-Herald. It’s ALWAYS people from the Eastern Suburbs wearing ridiculously expensive clothes, with a token Newtown person in Vinnies chic thrown in. So original *eye roll*
loading...
Hillarious!!! So true. Maybe that’s supposed to make you feel like part of the look is achievable… I don’t now about you, but I never see any of that type of vintage clothing in my vinnies!!!!
loading...
Yeah, and I GO to the Vinnies in Newtown! Lol.
I’m the worst op-shopper, or selectively blind, because people are always telling me about magical op-shops which have ridiculously discounted designer clothes and everything you’d ever need for any costume party ever, and then when I go it’s just mum jeans and VC Andrews books…
loading...
Hah I am a terrible op-shopper too!! I can never find anything that impresses me.
My friend on the other hand- half her wardrobe is op shop pieces and they are amazing! boo!
loading...
I love Hel Looks and Advanced Style. They are so interesting and show case a variety of people. I like to see more than just tall, thin, white women when looking at street fashion.
loading...
Love this! A few more Aussie pics would be great.
loading...
That second photo with the tie up shirt is so 90s!!
All these pics make me want to go shopping!
loading...
great-ive been waiting for a section like this!. would be great if you had more australian shots. maybe with a description of what they are wearing.
loading...
Fabulous idea! Love it!
loading...
I LOVE this! Think it will become my favourite post on MM every week!
