Zoe 380x465 5 ways to make your hair look longer.

Zoe

by ZOE FOSTER

I recently had a haircut in which I walked away with longer (looking) hair. There were no extensions or wizards involved (I stopped going to Slinky Sam’s Magic Hair Emporium years ago, thank you), just a clever chap who knew that I was trying to grow my hair, and that the one-length style I’d had when it was short was not translating now that it was past shoulder-length.

Here’s what he did, and some other swift tricks to cheating long looking hair.

1. The haircut.

When you sit down, ask your cutter for – and try not to be offended when they giggle – a cut/trim that will make your hair look longer. Usually (as it was with mine) it means getting blended layers that will make your hair look… flowier as opposed to a flat, blunt style. Not all-over, 90s layers, just a bit of choppiness and cutting with some slightly shorter layers around the face, usually. This will not involve a one-length cut, so if that’s the style you’re after this isn’t for you. And do use hair masks/treatments and get trims every six weeks even if you’re on a megamission to get it long – split ends won’t add to lengthy lusciousness, they will stagnate and look lank and brittle.

2. The styling

Should you have ever had your hair curled or waved in salon by a clever person wielding some tongs or a styler, and spent the next few days wondering how come your hair looks longer than when you do it using the very same tools, I will tell you how: It’s the ends! It’s all in the ends. The pros will usually leave a few cm straight at the end of the waves and curls, which creates an optical illusion of the hair being longer. It’s easy to do at home, just leave a few cm out of your styler/tong clamp. Or, cheat, by going the ends of already curly/wavy hair with your styler and making them straight.

3. The part

A middle part will make your hair look longer. Which is a shame if your hair is teaming with cowlicks like mine, or just looks more flattering/is cut to a side part… But if you can spare a few minutes, blow dry the front section straight down over your face, and then take all of it over to each side of the face and blow dry it before finally creating a middle part, blow drying that and finally section-clipping (bobby pins leave dents) each side as low on your forehead as possible so the hair sets/cools into the part. Apply your makeup/shine your shoes/feed your goats then release the clips and enjoy.

4. The texture

Obviously straight hair looks longer than curly hair, but I tend to think the wave with the straight ends as detailed above makes hair look the longest of all. Add some beach spray to the mid-lengths, and hair powder at the roots for a bit of volume and movement.

5. Wear a wig.

Oh, and just on wigs… remember National Donate Your Hair week is coming up!

I read it as “stubbly pageant” thinking she won the pageant for the most stubble on her legs which would be most impressive but not really the thing beauty editors should do

I’ve always loved long hair……….as a little kid, when my mum used to get my hair cut (even permed – yikes !) I’d get out my secret stash of her assorted – colour laddered stockings and create long plaits which I’d fix to a head-band and wear in the car so that people would think I had “beautiful long hair”.
I’d have problems taking people with short hair seriously because I’d be looking at them thinking “What’s up. Why did you do that to yourself ?”
Moving forward a few decades and I still sing the praises of long hair because there’s no doubt (in my mind anyway) that longer hair looks softer, and more youthful on most women.
So, thanks for the tips………I hope the fashion for longer locks hangs around for a bit longer – even if all of those models & media women DO look oddly related……..lol.

    1. Where do you get your hair cut Zoe? At Barney Martin where you mentioned previously?

    2. Does anyone know a great shampoo/conditioner for blonde curly hair (DRY! and DEHYDRATED!) which is as natural as possible?? (no SLS, parabens, petrochemicals etc) as I have a crazy sensitive scalp and also prefer to be as chemical free as possible!

I’ve been using Original Mineral’s Hydrate & Conquer Shampoo & Conditioner. I think it’s fabulous, Australian made, natural and smells delicious. Their Frizzy Logic Shine Serum is also amazing. You can buy it online through Adorebeauty.com.au :-)

Pureology. I swear by it. I use the whole range, it rescued my very dry/over bleached hair. My hairdresser can’t believe how healthy and soft my hair is. If I use anything else my hair is awful. Plus no split ends…EVER!!!!

Can I make a couple of suggestions?
If you really want long hair (especially SUPER long hair), avoid the blow dryers and straighteners. I have very healthy hair, and nothing wrecks it (and gives it split ends, which are the arch nemesis of hair growing) like heat tools. I still straighten my fringe – but that gets cut every 4 weeks so it can handle it. If you are going to get trims on your length every 6 weeks, you can be a bit more rough with your hair, but it’s also going to take you much much longer to grow it. I get my ends trimned every 2 months or so, and my hair grows very fast.
The best thing you can do when growing is to absolutely BABY your hair.

Layers can be good when you want to wear your hair out, but they can also be a total PITA when you want to do amazingly awesome updos, braids and other styles.

There are a lot of trade-offs when it comes to hair. Figure out what your goal is (length, or being up with the latest trends) and stick with it ;)

Zoe would you mind putting a picture up of your haircut? I think our hair is about the same length and I am in need of a trim! A picture would be wonderful! Thank you :)

Thanks Zoe, perfect timing as usual! I’ve just been pondering this exact issue as I’ve decided to grow out my one-length cut that is down to my shoulders.

So I’m off the the hairdresser to ask for some blended layers!

    THANK YOU ZOE!!
I recently (uhh, in June, but it still makes me sad) had my waist-length hair cut off, and while it looks so, so much healthier now, I miss the length so much. I’m a really lazy hair person and am lucky enough to have hair that requires next-to-no effort. I naturally have really wavy/curly (“beachy”?) hair that I’m always told “people pay good money” for… but now that it’s so much shorter, my curls are bouncier and it’s frustrating as hell. And it is also teaming with cowlicks, so I feel your pain.
I find that my hair looks the longest when it’s up in a high pony (unstraightened) so that’s been my go-to hairstyle lately as far as my feeble attempts at making it look longer. Since willing it to grow isn’t working.

    Great advice, Zoe (as always!)

I have been growing out my straight-across shoulder length hair since January. It’s now at that awkward not long/not short stage just under my arm-pit level.

I want to do something with it but am worried about having my hair turned into a Rachel from Friends 90′s layered style (not that there’s anything wrong with that) ;)
