Not that any of us ever have them obviously! Ha! As if. We are total dreamboats, the lot of us, sailing from one gloriously glossy hair day to the next without so much as a lick of frizz or a lank fringe in sight.

But sometimes our, uh, friends have shit hair days, so maybe keep these tips handy and pass them on…

1. The fake ‘I’ve had my hair done’

Great for any length, sort or long: Run your styler/ghd/Cloud Nine/flat iron over the ends of your hair, just a couple of inches up from the tips is all, so they look sharp and, yknow, cool. Then use a styling cream (like Rusk Wired Styling Cream) or a dab of your dude’s styling wax or pomade warmed up in your hands, and define the ends a bit. Next flip your hair upside down, and mist hairspray all over lightly. Wait 10 seconds, then flip up. Tousle with fingers and you’re done, cool cat.

2. Inject Instant interest

Great for: waves and curls: Spray dry shampoo all over the head, pulling air up to get underneath and at the back too. Leave in for 30 seconds, then on low heat, use your hair dryer and fingers to settle it in to the scalp and soak up any oil. Next massage a small amount of texture cream or paste (like Garnier Fructis Surf hair) between your hands, then grab and twirl and “fondle” random sections from the mid-lengths to the ends. Zim zang zop – root lift and texture!

3. Cheaty loose waves.

Great for long, dull, flat hair: Mist thermal protector through hair and allow to dry. Take your curling tong (or styler) and starting at the ears or below, (you roughly want the bottom third section of hair, no higher) put in random curls all over. Hold the tong or styler close to the head, not sticking out, so the waves lay flatter. Once each curl is done, tug it gently at the bottom to make it wavy and loose rather than right and coiled. Spray all over with light hair spray and then marvel at your new sexy texture. (Sexture.)

4. The twisty tousled texture hit

Great for: one-length bobs

Spritz sea salt spray (like the excellent Bumble and Bumble Surf spray) all over your dry hair. Take sections haphazardly and twist the hair with fingers so that it starts to turn back on itself. Bobby pin in place and then go over whole head with low-air, low-heat hair dryer to set it. Allow to cool completely then remove pins and tousle and tease and scrunch the hair with your fingers and a light zhoom with that low-heat, low-air hair dryer.

5. The Bardot.

Great for: hair that is already quite big and maybe reminiscent of rat woman. (Usually after having an intense hairstyle/updo the night before.)

Do nothing except finger scrape, very gently, your hair up onto the top of your head. Secure with a hair bungee or elastic into a high pony up there. There can be pieces framing your face and ‘bubbles’ it’s okay. Now with bobby pins secure the pony into a loose bun shape, tugging gently at sections once it’s in a bun, so that it’s voluminous. Use a clean, large powder or bronzer brush and brush it in small circles along your hair line, which will bring out more cute little face-framey bits of hair, which softens it and adds to the overall Brigitte Bardot look. Add winged eyeliner and nude lips, obviously.

6. Slick down and behave yourself

00 2812931 290x385 6 ways to fix disaster hair.

Kate Bosworth’s slick bun

Great for: hair that won’t do ANY of the above.

Mix some blow dry/straightening cream with gel together in your hands and comb through – with a fine tooth comb – hair that you have dunked under the tap and made wet, but not washed. Create a nice, deep side part and comb it neatly into a low ponytail or bun, or if your hair is short, just tuck behind ears. Do a red/bright lip or add some deco-style earrings (very now) and well, look at you, fancy pants.

    Love the tips!

I’ve got a new one which I only discovered myself last week, completely by accident. FYI my hair long and thick. So – hair was dirty – I applied dry shampoo to roots, then I pinned up the front section of my hair into a messy faux quiff (which I do every morning to also get it off my face whilst I make up) and gave a quick spray of hairspray. I also now have dry conditioner too, as my hair is on the dry side, so dry shampoo makes the ends feel feral. Dry conditioner = genius – gives softness back to the ends without greasing it up either. So I applied a bit of dry conditioner through my mid-lengths and ends, and I don’t even know why I did this – but I then twisted/bundled that lower part of my hair into a mini bun. Left it all for about 20 mins whilst I did make up and got dressed. Unpinned the top and undid the bottom bun – and the result of dry conditioner + bun equalled mid-lengths and ends with movement – ie slight waves and kinks – it was genius! I’m going to do this all the time now – as my hair is pretty heavy and due to morning run etc, can get quite flat and boring towards the end of a wash cycle (every 3-4 days) – and all of this seriously livened it up! Has taken a lot of time and words to type this all out – but seriously took about 2 mins to actually do. Highly recommend if you have similar hair to me.

Thanks Zoe, I typically try and make an effort these days as being a SAHM (4 kids under 6 years) you tend to do the pony back or if you’re lucky enough you get 5secs to give it a quick brush :-)

I now either give it a quick low plait and pin to the side or the famous Lauryn Eagle bun on The Apprentice (I always get comments on this high bun ontop of my head. It’s super fast too!) also for those days that I haven’t washed and hair looks a tad greasy, baby powder works a treat to absorb the oily-ness.

Thanks for a great post xx Dani

The high bun/topknot is one of my favourites too. Super fast. And the low-plait! Very V. Beckham.

    Fixing a bad hair day?

I have the short bob – and if I had the time to do all those things Zoe has recommended, I would have had time to wash and blow dry it properly!

What about picking up a piece right in the front and then twisting it, gathering new bits along the way, then when you get to the end of the fringe area, pin with a bobby pin.

      It’s a great look.

Oh it’s so much lighter and brighter on this side. I’ve just spent some down time reading all the responses to the Nick D’Arcy post so needed a “Zoe” post to freshen up for the afternoon.
That said, Zoe can you please do a video on how to use those donut thingys for your hair. I swear I’m the only female on the planet who can’t donut my hair.

You can use a rolled up sock over your pony tail then fan hair around the sock and pin into place. Youtube has alot of tutorials on how to do the “sock bun” alternatively you can buy hair donuts from hairdressers

        1-Scoop hair into a pony
2- if it’s fine, tease the top 3 inches of the pony out a little
3- place the ponytail through the middle/hole of your donut
4- tilt your head forward a little, and spread the pony over the donut evenly.
5- grab an elastic, and put it over the whole donut & spread hair mass. (it looks silly at this point)
6- sweep all the excess hair in one direction around the donut, & shove it in under the donut to hide it away
7- pin it & anchor to your head. Spray with hairspray. smile & go

You can buy these foam twisty things on ebay – about $5 for 4 of them. In my experience, way easier to use than the sock and has the same effect.

It is a kind of foam donut that you can use to make a bun (see photo)

I don’t have personal experience with using one myself, but I can tell you that a work colleague had a donut used by a hairdresser in her wedding hairdo. She had fine hair and it wrecked her hair totally.

Lots came away with the donut when it was taken out, and her hair didn’t grow for over 6 months, and went thinner still. It became very delicate from having been stretched.

Thanks for the tips Zoe. I’m having about 20cm chopped off this week due to stress-related hair loss so going from stringy long frizz to hopefully something resembling a soft tousled bob…pouf…there goes my dreams of having hair like Elle McPherson! But if my hair ends up looking like yours does at the moment Zoe I’ll be over the moon…

What about when the hairdresser completely effs your hair? As in cuts it way shorter than you wanted and layers it all over as well? It’s too short it put in a bun and flicks out like some kind of ugly plant in a pony tail.

Worst is I can even go back and get them to fix it because it’s too short :(

I’m praying it grows into it’s own in the next 2 weeks before my holiday otherwise there won’t be many pics of me

A cute hat can cover a multitude of sins – and years from now you’ll look back at those photos and just think how young you looked, not about how crap your hair was, so you shouldn’t miss out on holiday photos just cause you don’t like your hair style :-)

With very fine, very straight hair its a mission for me to get any body/movement into it whatsoever. Add to that the fact that it gets so oily I have to wash it every day and its a recipe for bad hair day most days!
My fail-safe is Batiste dry shampoo, on the pieces around my face and the nape of my neck, then randomly through the top. Head upside down, whoosh it around, then pile it all up high in a messy, random pile.
Works for the school run, lunch out, and at a push even a night out!

The only reason I get away with a wash every 2nd day is that I colour my hair (permed in the 80s).
Occasionally I use a 2in1 or a shampoo that removes build up. I had to get a perm for my wedding because it wouldn’t hold any sort of curl. I’ve just gotten used to it over time.

If I’m thinking the right thing – Its like a straight piece of stretchy elastic (like a hair band but not in a circle) with a hook on each end. So you hook one end on, wrap it around until its tigh enough then hook the other end in place. I haven’t used them or seen in person but look very cool!

Zoe, can you tell me what lipstick you are wearing in that photo? It is gorgeous! I’ve been searching for a pink exactly like that!

My tip for a bad hair day – cut it all off! I did the big chop last week (ater 6 months of growing in order to be able to get it up in a pony – what a waste!) and now have a pixie haircut that I am loving. So easy!

Only prob is that because of my hair my face looks a little different and I am having a hard time working out what make up looks pretty and feminine (and young!) with my new hair, but not too over the top girly…

I’ve tried that method but can’t for the life of me get it!!
Here’s what I do…. Hair is in ponytail…. pull pony tail through donut and then fan the hair out over the donut. Put an elastic band over the top. Collect the ‘fanned out’ hair together and twist it (as if you were making a normal bun). Wrap this around the donut and secure with a pin.
Check out clip below (skip to about 3:30). I have bra-strap length hair which works well, but don’t know if it will work with other lengths. Good luck!

I was in the UK recently and in an accessories shop and one of the girls working in there used one of these things in a customers hair to show how it worked. Loads of us gathered around and watched in amazement how quickly a gorgeous bun was created an of course then purchased one!
