I was a bit excited about today. Purely because it was Oaks Day – third day of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival – which meant it was Sarah Jessica Parker Day. I just adored SJP on The Project last night!
I liked her in SATC but was never overly keen on her character. A bit whingy for someone who led such a charmed life…
But I loved her in 1991 movie LA Story as Sandy (very funny role) and I found her actual personality on the show last night to be similar.

OK, this might betray a bit of cultural cringe or something, but don’t you think OS celebrities always look so much more glam when they are, well, OS? When they’re here it seems so apparent what they really are – selling an image (often desperately, or hoping it doesn’t end soon) for money, status and the next job. When they’re somewhere else, it doesn’t seem so transparent.
Also makes me think, thank goodness Australians keep a healthy skepticism for our own celebs, while following OS ones more avidly.

oh absolutely! and I think the reason it’s more transparent when they’re here, is because it’s so incongruous. They have no connection to either the place, or the event that they’re attending. I also think it’s very transparent and tacky on behalf of the companies involved as well.
I mean, they’re on a plane for what, 18hrs ish to get here…so 36hrs travel total here and back….and then they’re here for not much longer than that. It’s completely obvious that they’re here because they’re being paid, and bloody big bucks too! I heard that Kim Kardashian was being paid $150,000 for a 1hr appearance at the races (which of course she’s not doing now)…that’s just obscene!

I forget her name, but the Hart girl – needs no more accessory than that gorgeous smile she always has going… SJP looked classy but i was hoping for something more out there…and poor simone callahan, oops on the dress…was it just a bad photo? new mrs Warne could be the winner for me too….

Check out the fashions on the field entrants – the ones I saw were all vintage styled, some were a bit avant garde but definitely not short, tight and skanky. Much nicer than anything any of these celebrities wore.
P.S They’re not in this gallery but in my opinion, the sass and bide women belong on a runway – I thought they looked very out of place in both their Cup Day and Oaks Day outfits; just didn’t work for me. The Spring Carnival always evokes class and refinement, not glitz and showiness.
