Do You Like This Story?

I’m so boring when it comes to my hair. It’s always been the same – long, straight and a dark blonde/light brown sort of colour depending on the season and whether or not I’ve been bothered getting highlights done. I’m too terrified of long-term changes in case I ruin my hair forever, but I do get bored of always looking the same.

Coloured hair has been an up-and-coming trend for awhile now, and we’re not just talking a head full of pink hair. Coloured tips and streaks are huge and I was seriously tempted to try out the trend after I saw photos of Lauren Conrad’s pink-and-blue tips. So imagine my delight when I started seeing all these options for coloured hair extensions – a brilliant way to try that pop of colour without spending more than 10 minutes in a chair at the hair salon.

It’s definitely worth noting that Great Lengths Australia have created pink hair extensions – for $10 you can have hot pink or light pink placed through your hair and all proceeds go to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (thanks Paula from LifeStyled for letting us know that this is happening!). (Update: For those interested, these will be available in stores starting from next week.)

If straight colour is too boring, there are always feathers.  Yep, you heard that right, you can put feathers in your hair.  They are quick and easy to have applied (with little micro beads) and last up to four months, plus they can be curled and straightened and treated just like normal hair. They also come in a range of colours – from blue to pink to more subtle colours. Lana and I had a couple of Navajo Hair Co feathers put in over the weekend (you can get as many or as few as you like) and we are loving them. For those concerned about the feather factor, they are fallen rooster feathers and no animals are harmed in the process.

We’ve put together this gallery for you – flick through to check out the coloured hair trend, including coloured hair extensions and our feather hair extensions..

Would you try coloured or feathered hair?

A feather with installation starts at $10.00. I was in Diva today and if you like the hair feathers but want them to be slightly less permanent, they have heaps of thin headbands (so you can hide them in your hair) with a great range of different colours and styles of feathers attached to one side of the band – so they look like the feather extensions. My personal fave was the peacock feathers on on a thin chain and they also had a great black and white design which looked fab in blonde hair.

Hair feathers look amazing. Earlier this year while I was travelling through Los Angeles airport I saw a woman who had glossy black hair with a sleek red feather and some hair tinsel just on one side. It looked great.

Sephora in the U.S sold out of these synthetic feathers in their first month in-store after celebrities like Beyonce were seen on the Red Carpet with them.

This prompted me to source the synthetic feathers and the hair tinsel and we have introduced them into Australia as Dazzle Strandz. They should be hitting the shelves of all major Australian hair and beauty distributors this in October/November and from there making their way into salons.

There are some salons on Bay St Port Melbourne that are doing this service already.

Here are some photos of just how good they look.

Feather hair extensions has really become a popular hair fashion which came from celebs. Even Steve Tyler from aerosmith is rockin feather hair extensions. I saw an infomercial on tv for a hair extension called Snap on Feathers which allows you to do have them without a trip to the salon.

I sell genuine feathers as I am a distributor for Whiting Farms. The feathers can stay in your hair and be washed as they are 100% natural and the feathers since natural can be heated to the hair and stay perfectly. I sell for $10 a strand and most farms across the USA and world are now out of genuine feathers for the year and have to wait until the baby chicks grow their feathers. Contact me at yuyu@live.com.au You might wonder why I have access to these feathers. Simply because my husband and I own a fly fishing business and this is what the feathers were originally used for. They are beautiful thin feathers and all natural colours. The birds are specifically bred for these longer thinner, more colourful and unique feathers.

Called up about 10 different salons in Sydney last night after reading this article to see whether they were doing the Breast Cancer pink extensions and only 1 salon had heard about it! These were salons I’d gotten from the Great Lengths stockists website. So after more than 30 mins on the phone I decided to lock in an appointment with Tony and Guy in Balmain as they said they had pink hair extensions. With my heart set on the pink streaks, off I trotted to Balmain this morning for my consultation.

However when I got there I was told they weren’t doing the $10 pink streaks rather they only stocked the regular Great Lengths hair extensions and because I was already there and was so excited to go through with it I decided on getting some anyway. I paid $18 per strand rather than the $10 per strand :( I wish the salons were doing the Breast Cancer extensions! I liked the idea of all proceeds going to the foundation :(

I was sick of boring straight long hair too, so I shaved it all off whilst raising thousands of dollars for the Leukeamia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave back in March. Brilliant cause, and have had a great few months of just wearing fun beanies and hats.
Now that my hair is only a couple of inches, and I can’t do much with it, I walked into a hairdresser and said go wild with the colour! I am now a red-head with bright pink low-lights (previously boring brown with blonde highlights). Loving the change! I think I’ll ‘go nuts’ now each time I visit the hairdresser.

This looks awesome! Not sure if these styles/feathers would work with my red curly long hair. Not much does – so it is kind of annoying trying to find a new look. For a while I was thinking about bleaching a few streaks and then dying them bright pink. What colours would work well with red hair?

    • Navajo Hair Co

Hi Louise, if you have a hair iron you can curl the feathers so that they fit in beautifully with your curls. For red hair, I’d suggest keeping with the warmer tones, such as the Fox Canyon Orange, Desert Sun Red, Evening Star Yellow. We’re also about to launch a stunning burgundy colour.
TIP: You could bundle a striped and solid feather together in one attachment.

I love fashion but let’s face it we can look great without animal products. We should always seek the sources of these products and the origins are often far less than the glamorous outcome. Faux fur looks great, why can’t someone make fake feathers? I’d buy them! This article explains it a bit better: http://veryglossy.wordpress.com/2011/06/11/the-price-of-feather-hair-extensions/

Hi Lady, thanks for the link! Lana looked into the sources of Navajo Hair Co feathers closely and it all checked out okay, but I’m sure there are some companies that don’t source their feathers ethically and this is definitely worth noting. The Navajo Hair Co. feathers are so easy to take care of, you won’t even notice they’re there until you get the compliments. They’re attached to the hair with a discrete microbead (3 colours available blonde, brown and black).
You can brush them, blowdry them, iron them etc and they will last up to 4 months without fading or losing their integrity. You can even reapply them after this point if you hang onto the feathers.
