When we read the Queen eats Special K for breakfast, we couldn’t help but think she’s a little bit like the rest of us. But then we found out Lizzie has never ever worn a pair of jeans and we realised our lives couldn’t be further apart.

Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee started today – it’s a four days of celebrations to mark her 60th year on the throne. Over the next few days, her reign will be celebrated with street parties, concerts and river pageants.

Through all the coverage, we’ve found out some interesting facts we never knew about the the Queen, which we wanted to share with you. Take a look.

1. The Queen has a member of staff with the same shoe size who is responsible for ‘wearing in’ one’s royal footwear. Given how much she gets around, she doesn’t have the luxury of getting blisters from new shoes.

2. The Queen’s outfits, each and every one, are given names so they can be easily sorted and so her assistants know which one is needed on any given day.

3. Australian girl guides gave the Queen the ingredients which would make her wedding cake.

4. She once demoted a footman for giving her corgis whiskey.

5. She collected clothing coupons for her wedding dress in keeping with the spirit of post-war austerity.

6. The Queen is responsible for a new breed of dog after one of her corgis mated with a dachshund owned by her sister Princess Margaret.

7. The Queen sent an email before most of us … in 1976 at a British military base.

8. There have been 12 US Presidents during her reign. She also has held, and holds, regular briefings with British Prime Ministers (on a Tuesday night). There have been 12 of those, too, during her reign. Tony Blair was the first to be born during the Queen’s tenure.

9. The Queen has received more than 3.5 million items of correspondence in 60 years.

10. Thanks to a really old law, the Queen owns all the wild ‘mute’ swans in Britain though she rarely makes use of them.

11. The Queen has NEVER given an interview to a journalist. But just last week, Prince Harry and Prince William sat down with US journalist, Katie Couric.

12. Canary yellow is apparently the Queen’s colour, but Vogue recently analysed what she wore over a year and found her wardrobe was 7% yellow, 11% green, 29% blue, 10% purple, 10% pink, 4% red, 4% orange, 13% floral, 2% black, 1% beige and 10% cream.

I read on a UK website that the cape she wore to the concert last night (which looked really lovely and trendy on her) was one she wore in 1960 when when she was photographed by Cecil Beaton.

Can you imagine her 1950′s and 60′s wardrobe? To die for…

I’m not really for or against the royals, other than Harry because he is a hunky hunky babe, but my Grandmother once told me that the Queen had to fight her family really hard on the issue of her getting her licence, because it wasn’t considered appropriate for her to have it or know how to drive a car.
No idea if it’s true or not, but if it is I think that is really, really cool!

Am I the only one who seriously doesn’t give a royal flying fig one way or another? Ok if one actually analyses her job, I bet any one of us would jump at the chance of all that access to power, money, access to celebs , dinners, and great days out. Not to mention a few super cool palaces to live in and what could be achieved for worthy charities , All in all I don’t think her life has been too bad. Sure there’s the pomp and circumstance and political element. But I think the good has outweighed the bad? ……. Rah bloody rah

What do you think she was thinking as she was looking at George W Bush – photo 20 I think – probably what a loser he is

She is gorgeous and I am surprised like others have said at the fondness I feel for her – especially looking at these photos. Great gallery MM

I really like that the Royal Family seem to have learnt from mistakes and that the Queen is spending so much time with and seemingly helping Kate – there seems to be a true affection between them – pity this didnt happen with Diana

    Enjoy your celebrations Liz!!

Cool lady, huh? I think that’s my favourite thing about her oldies and her – the QM and her dad refused to bugger off during the war, I think their sticking it out in England was a huge help to their war effort, as they were seen to be mucking in and getting on with things like everyone else had to. They could have so easily buggered off, but stayed.

I really like the Royals. I am a republican but I really like them. I think Charles is cool, and I think the Queen is a great old stick. I think it was her Dad that started the new Royals, with keeping them in England during the war instead of nicking off somewhere safer, and she’s always very observant of the plebs and their lot, and that seems to have rubbed off on the kids and grandkids.
So yeah, really dig them, just not to be in charge of us.

Why is the headline “Silver Jubilee”? That was in 1977.

Does anyone know why we’re celebration the Diamond Jubilee now, and not next year? Her coronation was 2 June 1953, so that makes it 59 years this year.
I’ve emailed Buckingham Palace, and I’m sure they’re of course on to and drafting their response post haste, but just in case they’re not, does anyone know what the story is?

        Hey kris,
Just a guess but possibly it’s 50 years since she became queen, on her father’s death? The coronation is usually some time after the ascension to the throne.

She became queen 60 years ago but the coronation was held exactly 12 months later.

That makes sense, it just isn’t spelled out anywhere! It says on the Palace website (no reply, yet) that the coronation didn’t happen because it was in the mourning period, but it doesn’t say anything about 2 June 1952, only 1953. And her Dad died in Feb, so it’s not the anniversary of the accession.

Probably to do with the season. I doubt a coronation in February in England would have been very pleasant. June would make much more sense.
