During a catch up with some friends on the weekend, it transpired that three of the six dames present were using the wrong makeup remover for their mascara of choice. Obviously I left mid-meal and screamed home to write this, lest you foxes be making the same error.

If you use regular mascara:

Use a dual-phase oil and water remover (like Lancôme Bi Facil) for quick and very efficient results, (but a no-no for lash extensions). These are especially good if you wear a lot of liner and shadow with your mascara. Or, just stick to a regular, water-based eye makeup remover, the kind we all grew up with. The Body Shop Camomile Remover and Clinique Take The Day Off Makeup Remover (so great for sensitive skin) are both good.

When you use, be sure to dab onto a cotton pad (yes, tissues and dunny paper are too abrasive, before you ask), hold over the closed eye, then wipe down the lashes (not horizontally – very wrinkle-causing).

Or, cheat and use eye makeup pads, like the Almay ones (choose the oil-free ones as the oily ones can leave debris in the eye which is ANNOYING), which I have been using steadily for about seven years and simply press and wipe on my face after cleansing to remove all leftovers and really clean the eye exceptionally indeed. Then cleanse.

Or, if travelling/lazy/drunk, use a very decent makeup remover wipe, like MACs or La Biosthetique Belavance Make-up Remover Towelettes.

Waterproof mascara:

This is where oil becomes necessary. The best way to go about it is to use a cleansing oil, which is not only terrifically moisturising, gentle and excellent at removing all makeup and dirt without disrupting your skin’s barrier, but was originally developed as a gentle alternative for stage and film actresses who had many makeup changes a day, and their skin was getting ratty and red from all the makeup removing.

Cleansing oils emulsify once you add water and massage them onto (dry) skin, then it all glides off as you rinse, so there’s no need to double cleanse, although many women do from habit, and that’s fine.

eyelashes 380x380 3 of my girlfriends were doing this wrong. Are you?

Which remover is best for your mascara?

And yes, even oily skin can (should!) use them – the oil takes away not only makeup and grime, but also excess sebum. If you’re a heavy makeup, (especially long-last or waterproof), primer or sunscreen user, cleansing oils will greatly and seriously benefit your skin.

I love Shu umeura cleansing oil (the original), of which there are several varieties for different skin types, and Dermalogica’s pre-cleanse: both remove even very heavy eye makeup and waterproof mascara easily and neither irritate my eyes or make them a bit glazed afterwards, which can happen with some cleansing oils.

Tubular mascara:

Tubular mascara is applied like regular mascara, but then, quietly and invisibly as you go about your day, creates little tubes around each lash. This means it won’t smudge or fall off, it just stays PUT, hugging each lash like they’re lovers.  Sweat, cry; be in the tropics, it won’t budge. It’s outstanding, especially if you know there’s a chance you might swim or go to an all night rave. But the REAL bonus is that no makeup remover or cleanser is required to remove tube mascara – just warm water to soften the tubes, and your thumb and forefinger to gently slide the ‘tubes’ down and off the lashes.

Also, your eyes will be completely clean, (if you were thorough with your tube-removing) there are no remnants as you step out of the shower, just clean lashes and bare eyes. I’ve been a user for five years and cannot go back to regular mascara now. No chance. I love Clinique’s Lash Power, Bobbi Brown’s Perfectly Defined and MAC Opulash (for volume and tubes!)

Lash extensions:

If you still like to use mascara even though you’ve had lash extensions applied, (outrageous!) then be sure you’re not using a waterproof (or tubular) mascara and DO NOT USE NOT OIL BASED REMOVERS. They will weaken the glue/bonds and your lashes will end up all wonky donkey. Use regular mascara and remove very gently with a water-based remover, like Simple Conditioning Eye Make-Up Remover.

I don’t like waterproof mascara, so just use the regular one. However, when it comes to taking it off, regardless of what type I use, I take it off with pure sweet almond oil on a cotton pad. It comes off easily, no pulling or dragging, doesn’t clog and is good for fine lines. Win win situation! Plus it’s cheap, and lasts for ages :-)

    Hi Zoe (& everyone else),
I purchased the shu umeura cleansing oil after reading Amazing Face and my skin became extremely clogged up and prone to blackheads. My beauty therapist told me to check the ingredients for Mineral oil (parrafinum liquidum) and if it had it to stop using it, because apparently the mineral oil causes a film over your skin. Has anyone else had similar experiences or heard this?

I wear waterproof mascara everyday and have always struggled to get it off properly but I’ve recently been turned on to cleansing oils and will NEVER LOOK BACK. I originally started with Bobbi Brown’s version, which was great, but have recently bought a bottle of Shu Umeura’s cleansing oil (the pink one) and it’s AMAZING. LOVE!!! Absolutely no traces of mascara.

I’ve used Shu (yellow one) and Bobbi and both are great. I like Shu because it seems to be a little thicker than the BB one. Less watery.

I’ve also become a recent convert to cleansing oils, but did you know you can make your own?
It’s a ratio of castor oil (the cleansing part) and a mixture of moisturising oils such as jojoba and olive oil. You just change the ratios depending on your skin type!
It might save you a bit of cash :-)

Great post Zoe, thanks for tips. I am totally in LOVE with my KATE mascara which my brother bought for me in Japan (Bless him) . He knows I’m a make up junkie and thought I would like to try it. Needless to say it is a little ripper that is perfect for my lashes, comes off just like the tube mascara but does not budge all day. HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY :)

Hi Katiegirl, YES Neutrogena have discontinued that product. I went into a Priceline store about a fortnight ago and the Manager told me it had been discontinued. I loved it too… I have no idea what I am going to replace this fantastic product with as I was using Invisibile Zinc but found it made my skin pale. :-(

Hi Zoe – can I ask a mascara related question. I recently purchased the semi permanent mascara that you recommended as I have blonde lashes (well light colored as I am blonde). What should I use as a cleanser round my eyes when using this mascara? I have just been cleansing my face in the shower but I can’t see any difference in my lashes – ie no permanent tinting of my lashes? Is my cleanser too much for this kind of mascara? I am a bit disappointed as this product seemed like it would be great for my lashes but I can’t see any difference.

Which one was the semi permanent one?

I just bought the miraness as reccomended by many. still get a slight smudge under the eye sometimes but its pretty good. No real volume though, so I might try the Mac Opulash next.

I just use regular old non-waterproof Maybelline or Max Factor mascaras, however I always have SO much trouble removing them. I have tried many, many eye makeup removers, both regular and oil, but my mascara just won’t budge! The only way I can remove it is by using my regular face cleanser 2 or 3 times… I know that’s not the best method for protecting your eyes/lashes, but it’s the ONLY thing that works for me!
I might have to check out the tubular mascaras, but I have quite short, sparse lashes so I’m worried that they won’t give me enough length or volume!! Oh the dilemmas….

Sadly because most mascaras are made with the same product you find in boot polish! Hence the stinging eyes in the morning when you were too tired to take it off, and the difficulty in removing most mascaras

      GD Star Rating
      loading...
    • Lucy

Sarah Jane – I find some are more difficult to remove than others – but otherwise, have you tried using something like the Garnier Clean Sensitive Make Up Remover (not the eye specific one, just the regular one in the larger bottle) – which is the cheapest and most effective oil/water remover I’ve found – then get a cotton pad and dampen it with water, then pour some of the makeup remover onto the pad – press it to your eye for about 10 seconds – then gently wipe away. I find this the most effective way to get my mascara off – and find one pad for each eye will remove everything, and if I’ve worn more eye makeup than usual that day, I might use one extra cotton pad on both eyes to get every last bit.

Alternatively – I would go with the tubular mascaras – I’ve used the Becca one and the Kevin Aucoin one and I find they still give good length and volume. :)

My mother swears by Sorbolene moisturizer and I just generally use water. My sister uses make up removal wipes.

Honestly Why does it matter? Does it harm us if we don’t use a particular product?

    GD Star Rating
    loading...
    • Lucy

It’s not going to ‘harm’ you as such – I think it’s more to do with the fact that you’re removing makeup from a delicate area, so some products might sting or irritate which is not ideal, and if you’re too rough with removal – you can cause more eyelashes to fall out that normal, and you can cause more wrinkles by tugging at the delicate skin around your eyes. First world problems of course – but for those concerned about those issues, or having trouble removing their mascara – it’s helpful to know the difference between all the make up remover options out there! If what you’re doing works for you though – then you don’t have to worry! :)
