Do You Like This Story?

Every so often we run a thank-you note post based on Thx Thx Thx. It’s a website which was started by Leah Dieterich, a creative director and writer in LA. It’s based on the premise of writing thank you notes, and not just to people who had you over for dinner or gave you a birthday present. This is the delightfully quirky catch.

Her ‘About’ page describes it like this:

Leah Dieterich’s mother always told her to write thank you notes. So she does. To everything. thxthxthx is her daily exercise in gratitude.

There’s always something to be thankful for. From the important things like Songs You’re Embarrassed to Like, and Heavy Eyelids that Tell You When You Need to Sleep, to friends and family, love and loneliness, light and darkness, Leah Dieterich sets out to acknowledge them all. thxthxthx is her daily exercise in gratitude.

Here are a few examples from her site which she updates daily with a new note:

Thxthxthx

Dear Big Fight With Someone I’m Very Close To,

Thank you for helping me to clear the air with this person and prompting a really constructive conversation about some of the underlying issues that have been niggling between us for a while now. Even though you were extremely unpleasant at the time, we are much closer now because of you.

Love

Mia xxxx

Thank you for hoisting my boobs into the air on a daily basis. Without you, my boobs would be a sorry state. I really love it when I can take you off at the end of the day though, maybe you could work on not digging into me all the time? Help a girl out!

    Dear parcel pick-up guys,

Thanks for the lovely little note you popped in with my shopping today. It really is good to be back home and it’s people like you who make Australia a truly sunny place.

Thanks so much for your brilliant service — you make picking up my groceries fun (which, let’s face it, is amazing). And sorry I make you lug so much shopping (I really should be more organised, but it’s never going to happen…),

    dear awesome psychologist b,

Thanks for putting up with me for 5 years, for dealing with my shit with a mix of kindness, compassion, tough love and humour.
Thanks for yelling at me when needed, for calling to check if im ok, for not letting me leave when you knew I wasn’t. For telling me everything i felt was perfectly reasonable, for changing the way i deal with everything, for saying you’re proud of me, for being proud of me and for crying in our last session, and letting me cry too.
mostly thankyou for saving my life. there are no words.

    Dear beautiful friends and family,

i appreciate being able to be genuine without judgement, so much happier in life.

    Dear ex boyfriend,

Thank you for your strength and kindness even after we broke up, and for supporting me through the trial. The fact that you existed and were so wonderful during that time was the one thing that let me know that the Universe still had my back and that everything will be alright in the end. I will forever be grateful and forever love and respect you.

Thank you also to my amazing husband who took time off from work to take my son to yet another specialist appointment so I didn’t have to go by myself with two kids to the appt that was an hours drive away with long waits. Love you xxx

There is a great children’s book out by Dallas Clayton called “An Awesome Book of Thanks”. It can be downloaded for free to print on the website veryawesomeworld.com or can be purchased in hard copy from the same place. My daughter has loved this book since she was about 18mths and still does. It’s probably better suited to her current age (nearly 3).
The book has a similar tone to the post saying thanks for basically everything that exists in the world and being grateful for everything big and small. Great read, really recommend to parents with young kids.

Thankyou for studying for many years, then taking a very poorly paid laboratory job. As hard as the last 3 weeks have been and the crazy rollercoaster of emotions that I have been on, thank you for going under. Yes it sucks sitting at home alone (and job searching argh!) but it has made me open my eyes to how loved I am by my mum, boyfriend and the co-workers I used to work with.
