Do You Like This Story?

secretly love2 380x283 The things (and people) that you secretly loveAuthor and columnist Nikki Gemmell described her friend’s confession like this:

”A declaration as risky, difficult and defining as an admission to church-going, or loving a book you wouldn’t be caught dead reading on a train but have secretly downloaded on your e-reader.

Just three simple words, setting off a little explosion of shock within the collected school gate psyche. “I adore Julia.” Dead silence. The perpetrator added, emboldened, “I’m coming out.” Another mum piped up, “I adore her, too.”

They looked at each other, amazed; it was like stumbling across some secret society of disparate females expressing deeply unfashionable, unspoken sentiments. Why? I ventured. “Because if I had a dinner party she’d be the one who’d stay back and help me do the dishes at the end.” Unlocked, the mum added, “We’re all scared of saying we love her – in front of men, especially.”

There are some things we would never admit in public – not because they’re  risqué or offensive but because we fear we will be judged. Or ridiculed. When you feel almost intimidated by the seemingly mass movement against something or someone.

For instance I hardly ever tell people that sometimes on the way to work I listen to Kyle and Jackie O – just for the music. And that occasionally I feed my child McDonalds and always order myself a small fries so that he doesn’t have to eat alone.

It’s actually liberating to get there and admit something that you have been hiding. It’s amazing how many people will agree with you.

Who or what do you secretly like that you are embarrassed to admit?

Makeover shows, and trash like Four Weddings.

Eating a whole packet of Pringles in one sitting and wiggling my hand down the bottom of the tin to get the crumbs.

Lame puns that everyone cringes at make me giggle much harder than intellectual humour.

    - reorganising my daughters’ dolls houses so they look “perfect” when they’re not playing with them
    - buying a dozen cinnamon doughnuts from Woolies and eating them in one day whilst reading blind celebrity gossip items
    - Tony Abbott – he seems like such a nice family man
    - exfoliating my heels and looking at how much skin comes off
    - using those blackhead strips and examining the casualties
    - watching All Saints and eating peanut butter and honey on soft white fresh bread with a glass of milo – 1 part milk to 5 parts milo
    - hearing a song or smelling a scent that reminds me of growing up in the late 80s/early 90s, just savouring the memories and feeling like I’m really there for that moment
    - telling my girls I’m sick so I can lay on the couch and watch TV whilst they “mother me” with their 3 year old foot rubs and 5 year old lullaby’s
    - looking at my husband and pretending I am a co worker/friend who thinks he is so cute and how perfect his life and family must be and then being secretly chuffed that that life is mine!

I love Bollywood movies like crazy – although this is not a secret with my friends and family. If I had the money I would go on a mass Bollywood movie spending spree. I also love trashy magazines but this is more secret. I always feel horrifically embarassed whenever I take one of my Mum’s magazines on any form of public transport – like I feel people would judge me if they see what I am reading. I have also eaten baby food a few times (when I was an adult) because it tasted nice….

It started when I was in my mid-late 20s and bought a Dolly magazine at the servo cause it came with a free bikini; later bought one that came with a free nightshirt and socks and it went from there. i have also come to love showbags for this purpose as well (from the royal easter show). 16 And Pregnant. Trashy, jaw dropping, delightful. I watch it on my lap top in my bedroom when my boyfriend is out. I tell my housemates I’m watching Q & A.

I used to go to op shops and pretend I was buying them for my grandmother! But now that I have a Kindle I can download and read them in public without anyone knowing …athough, just in case anyone looks at it, I have them hidden in secret folder, and a password!

p.s I’m only in my mid 20′s! (I blame my grandmother!) and my friends would probably fall over in shock if they ever discovered this! Most of them know me as quite erudite and literary! If only they knew how much history and vocabulary there is in ‘trashy’ Romance Novels!
