UPDATE: The death of Gaddafi has now been confirmed. The ‘mad dog’ dictator was attempting to flee his hometown in a convoy of jeeps which was halted by a French airstrike. He crawled into a drainage / sewer pipe, wounded, and was cornered by rebels before pleading to one ‘what did I ever do to you’? He was shot in the leg and chest after pleading for rebels to hold their fire. President Obama said his death marked the end of a ‘long and painful chapter’ for Libya. British PM David Cameron said: “I think today is a day to remember all of Colonel Gaddafi’s victims”, including those who died in the 1988 bombing of a Pan Am jet over the Scottish town of Lockerbie.” The rebels now claim ‘every inch’ of Libya has been liberated.
2. First asylum boat since Malaysia deal falls through ‘Liberals fault’: PM
A boatload of 51 asylum seekers, mostly Iraqis and Iranians, rests on the head of the Opposition, says the Prime Minister. Ms Gillard said Tony Abbott ‘denied our country’ the chance to stop more boats coming by sending arrivals to Malaysia. Mr Abbott was, by way of his Party’s vote, the man responsible for ensuring onshore processing of asylum seekers was the only way to move forward. This topic is discussed in depth tonight on Mamamia on Sky News as Mia chats to two refugees and the panel discuss the new reality … and how we got here.
3. Jones backtracks on Prime Minister ‘chaff bag’ comment
Broadcaster Alan Jones, who once said the Prime Minister Julia Gillard should be put in a ‘chaff bag and thrown out to sea’, (almost) apologised for the remark during an address to the National Press Club yesterday in which he also said Queensland had an addiction to mining. He said: ”Sometimes … when you’re going at 100 miles an hour these things are said … we don’t always say things that are fair and where we don’t I think we should be big enough to admit that they were better left unsaid.”
4. Foreign Affairs named Bali boy on drugs charges … after media did.
It was labelled as a ‘stuff-up’ by a Liberal Senator but the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has yet to apologise. The 14-year-old boy, held in Bali on marijuana possession charges but not yet convicted, was named in a transcript of a radio segment broadcast by 3AWs Neil Mitchell in Melbourne which was then posted on to Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd’s ministerial website. DFAT Secretary Dennis Richardson said he would take advice on whether the name should be removed but wasn’t sure what difference it would make, he said, given that the media had widely circulated the boy’s name since the early days of the case.
5. Hugh Hefner’s ex-fiancee flogs his ring … for half price
Crystal Harris, the Playboy playmate who left the empire’s founder Hefner days before his wedding, has auctioned the ring for a little more than $45,000. Hefner paid around $90,000 for the ring to begin with. Harris had reportedly tried to return the ring to Hefner but he declined.
6. Real life Facebook ‘horror movie’
A film-maker has made an online short film which asks users – you, if you so choose – to ‘take this lollipop’ which taps into your Facebook account and throws up all of your information in movie scenes that show just how much of yourself you are putting out there for all the world – and some creepy people – to see. Jason Zada, the director behind the website, said he made ‘very, very clear’ decisions not to store your data after the session has expired but wanted to show people how much trust they are placing in a company they don’t control. Want to try it? Go for it. I did last night and it was genuinely unsettling.

Jesus, fuck that is scary. I’m officially creeped out.
loading...
OMG, that “Take This Lollipop” site is TOTALLY freaky! I’m not easily creeped out, but that did it. No more photos of my family, even though my FB account is completely locked down. Ugh!
loading...
Ok, so i did it… now i’ve gone in to account settings to make sure everythings tight as it can be and it won’t let me editANT of my settings! I just wanted to remove my school and year!!! CRAP!!!
loading...
I just broke out in a hot flush after going to takethislollipop.com. I feel a little ill.
loading...
Me too!! Even though my privacy is as locked down as can be, I just deleted all my photos… My location and birthdate were never on there.

There is something about Adam Levine. That man is sex on legs.
loading...
There is something about your comment that is highly sexist and objectifying.
If I or any other male was to make a similar comment about some young model/singer/actress it would not be tolerated in any way, shape or form.
Not kosher, Melissa !
loading...
Are you being serious? JJ makes comments about Christina hendrixes boobs all the time. I dont think anyone has taken offense. Some people are attractive to some people. It’s Friday, maybe the weekend will chill you out.
loading...
I’ll be honest Bradley, when I read the first part of your post, I was going to say “take a chill pill mate, its all in good fun the post was harmless”, this was until I read the second part. You have made a very valid point and I couldn’t agree more. What is it that makes it ok for women to say certain things about men, and Very wrong for men to say the same things about women?
On a personal note Melissa’s post doesn’t bother me, I giggled because its all in good fun and no harm intended, but it would be the perfect example of a comment women are happy to make and for us to laugh along, but when men do the same, it becomes a massive “disrespectful sexist and objectifying” issue?! – Zero tolerance, No benefit of the doubt that perhaps comments are made in good fun with no intention to offend like we do?!
Not only is this hypocrisy in full swing, it raises serious questions about pride and respect. I believe there should be a serious conversation on this at some point. So, is it that men don’t need to be respected as much as women do? Because that is unacceptable, as a basic human right. The solution is simple. Two choices. Either women take a conscious chill pill to acknowledge that not every sexual comment made by a man about a woman has sexist, objectifying links behind it like we do, or we(men and women) can agree to be boring – forever conscious of Every single thing we say about each other for fear of offending each other. Respect is a two way street. Good post Bradley.
loading...
Really? Would you be offended if Bradley said There was something special about Miranda kir..I really couldn’t care less.
loading...
Zoe.. there’s a difference with saying there’s something special bout Miranda Kerr, and Miranda Kerr is sex on legs .. Wha is offensive, is women who don’t have a problem saying some things about men, but when the same things are said about women they go nuts by using the terms Bradley used “sexist, sex object” etc. That’s all.
loading...
Okay, I’ll play your game, Zoe.
“I find something special about Miranda Kerr”.
or
“Miranda Kerr is sex on legs”.
Which comment do you feel will get me into more trouble if I was to write it on this site ? Which comment do you believe would be removed from this site if I wrote it ?
You can’t have you cake and eat it, too !
loading...
Oh jeez, I don’t care if you say she is sex on legs. I really don’t. I have bigger things to worry about than who a stranger thinks is sexy. Have a nice weekend. *waves bye bye*
loading...
…..therefore, there was absolutely no point to your original comment.
Missing you already. *waves bye-bye back atcha*.
loading...
Hey dosh.
I just figured that if we are to play by the rules, we should all play by the rules. Goose, gander and all that jazz !
I appreciate your comment.
loading...
Haha! None whatsoever.
loading...
I don’t find it an offensive term. I am comfortable with hearing it said about either sex, by either sex. I don’t think it is inappropriate, especially when used in the context of someone within the entertainment industry where being sexy is a large part of their job description. To me describing someone as sexy is not an objectifying thing, as long as you’re not using it to degrade them or insinuate that is all they are. He’s posing for a sexy photo.. he wants me to say he’s sex on legs, that’s clearly the purpose of this photo..
But there is always someone who is going to be offended and there are always people who like to argue. When men comment on females on this site in a similar fashion I don’t have any problem with it. Haters gonna hate. I’m comfortable with my comment. He’s one sexy man.

There has been much comment around the place today about the death of Gaddafi.
Strangely, many comments praising the demise of The Evil One are being made by the same individuals who were “shocked and horrified” by the American reaction to news of Bin Laden’s passing.
Just interesting, I’m saying.

I’ve just read the full article on the Hugh Hefner’s fiancee on SMH. It says she split up with him only a few days before their wedding because she wasn’t happy with the naptuals. lol..why am I not surprised? she probably thought she could coerce the playboy King to give a huge chunk of his wealth to her in the event of a divorce or death, half maybe?..because that’s what marriage is about right? “50-50″..or something close to that.
But lets face it, Hugh Hefner has had a lot of beautiful blondes in his life and she was no different. Any amount of pampering, etc from this particular blonde wouldn’t be anything he hasn’t yet experienced before; since before she was born lol so, its gone off the rails, at her expense. She probably regrets all the “things” she did for(to) this “old man”, because her mind was firmly set on a potentially huge prize, it wasn’t love. She probably thought she had done enough to influence the 85 year old when it came to doing the figures in the always uncomfortable (I would assume) naptuals.
I wonder at which point it fell over, if it all…was she too eager…was there was a slip of the tongue…or maybe it was neither! He is afterall the playboy King and maybe thought she wasn’t entitled to more than a certain % of his wealth.. maybe it was always going to be that way from the beginning..in his mind. We see these things in movies…marry a wealthy man, get a divorce and take half his wealth.
Its not often that you would hear a couple breaking up their engagement because of a disagreement on how their wealth would be split in the event of a breakup…usually the whole excitement of a life together and love in the air wouldn’t get in the way to the extreme of ending it altogether…right? a compromise would be reached pretty quickly(I would have thought?)
Its clear from the footage I’ve seen of the two together, that she wasn’t love-struck(in my view). She was in it for the money, that’s it. I’m not particularly fond of people who are like that, wedding or otherwise, so its always a pleasure to watch them fail. No tears for Crystal Harris.
loading...
duh shes in it for the money/fame. But surely he’s not marrying 20 year old models expecting love??
loading...
He’s an 85yr old playboy.. god knows what he’s thinking..

Gaddafi dead. Karma sums it up. Hiding in a sewer, dragged on the street and beaten. He kept pleading with those who caught him “please don’t kill me and my sons, what did I do to you?” – trying to focus on one person at a time as he spoke.. Thousands of people who died in his 42 yr dictatorship said the same thing and he didn’t care..he laughed and called them rats. I don’t think there could have been a less dignified way to die for a man who believed he was second to God…crawling into a sewer to hide. So Karma hits, and it can hit very, very hard.
The “Arab spring” will continue, its not over by any measure. It began in Algeria, went on to Egypt and now Libya. Syria and Yemen are next..probably in that order. If the last few months are anything to go by, its clear that Arabs are some of the most resilient people. Threats and killing them only inspires them to fight harder and in larger numbers. The Syrian president has been there for a fraction of the time Gaddafi was dictator, so he is not “established”. He should be smart and cut down his already huge losses by stepping down voluntarily ASAP, because he is dillusional if he thinks the people’s resistance will stop. I hope that the “Arab spring” which began in Algeria would inspire people from other countries like Zimbabwe to get rid of Mugabe..another evil man.
loading...
Totally agree.
Good comment!!.

Thank you Jk:)

aw i love catherine!

I’m too scared to try the lollipop – lots of family photos on my facebook. Can anyone please tell me exactly what I might expect?
loading...
i think it probably depends on your privacy settings..? but when i did it, it just showed a guy looking at my profile page, the pictures i’m in, then attempting to find me in google maps (and then getting out of a car with my pic) but i don’t think i actually have that much info available, as when he typed into google, he typed melbourne 07 (i have on my profile i’m in melbourne) but not sure what the 07 is for.. ?? possible i misunderstood something..
anyone else want to share what they were showed?
loading...
Yeah same here. 07 is just the area code for your phone number. For me “Perth 08″ showed up because obviously neither you or I have published our phone numbers.
loading...
a creepy guys looks at your profile and the photos you are tagged in and is generally creepy…
loading...
Very, very creepy. If you have photos on your site, especially of your family, expect your stomach to turn over. It’s worth doing though – really makes you think about what you’re sharing…
loading...
Oh dear god – that lollipop thing is creepy!!
loading...
Uh, guys, it’s spelled Hefner.
loading...
Mea culpa!
loading...
I can’t seem to make the Facebook thing work …

that facebook thing is seriously disturbing!
Re Bali boy – Lake Macquarie Mayor has now flown to Bali for a visit and to show support. Not clear as to whether this was an official ie rate payer funded jaunt. I don’t understand why these people warrant so much support and attention? Yes, I know he is 14 but 14 is old enough to know that what he did was illegal, why should he be exempt from the consequences?
loading...
It was an unofficial visit. Apparently Greg Piper is a long time family friend and didn’t intend there should be any publicity of his trip, according to the Newcastle Herald.

As bizarre as it’s going to sound, I’m looking forward to seeing how Saturday Night Live handle Gaddafi’s death. Fred Armisen does a fantastic impression of him. Very funny.
I really don’t like Crystal Harris. She’s not very nice.

I think that Julia Gillard should stop blaming other people for her failures. It was a failed policy from the beginning. The High Court voted against it. Then she tried to put it into legislation and one of her own party went against her. I think it’s good old karma saying this is what you get for being underhanded and replacing Kevin Rudd.
Great news bites Rick!
loading...
Thanks! And you’re right, this whole blaming other people business is so … Year 4.
loading...
Honestly, who the fuck is advisng Gillard? What, exactly, do they hope to achieve with the line that it’s all Tony Abbott’s fault? Does she think the rednecks in Western Sydney are going to slap their heads and say “Gosh darn that Tony Abbott, he can’t handle the refugee issue, I’m totally voting Labor now!”
We’ve got a PM, but I fear we won’t have a leader until it’s Tony Abbott (and he’ll lead us places I don’t want to go).
I support the carbon tax. The NBN is a vital piece of infrastructure. Why are we even talking about a few thousand refugees?
FUCK FUCK FUCK.
loading...
Comment was pre-cup of tea. Appologies to non-rednecked Western Sydney folk!
It was… it was… ummmm… Tony’s fault!
Yeah… that’ll fly…
loading...
Oh, the irony of Western Sydney supporting a “silver-tail”…
loading...
Silvertail assisted immigrant Tony Abbott may be, but he’s reformed now!
He was once an egg-head Rhodes schollar too, but now he doesn’t hold any truck with them edumukated people with their science and economics.
loading...
Big gulp … just when you think things can’t possibly get worse for Julia, they do. I’ve had this thought about her so many times now I’ve truly lost all hope for her .. and us voters
loading...
As someone who lives in Blacktown I find the phrase “rednecks in Western Sydney” deeply offensive.
loading...
Well I did appologise to non-rednecks in those areas already…
loading...
To me that is not good enough.
My question is to Mama Mia, can you please advise why such an offensive comment made it through your moderators?
Will a full and unreserved apology be issued on the web site?
loading...
You’re joking right? For starters, the website doesn’t have to appologise for my comments.
Secondly, it’s been commented on before that a lot of refugee policy is driven by an attempt to gain votes in key seats, many which reside in Western Sydney. And that that policy is skewed towards xenophobia and racism that exists in those electorates. While most Australians prefer an on-shore refugee policy, those in Western Sydney don’t, so we don’t have that kind of policy offered by either of the major political parties. An easy ‘catch-all’ phrase for people who are bigotted, loud mouthed and opposed to empathy is redneck.
Lastly, get a grip.
loading...
How hard is it to say *some* in Western Sydney don’t (or even many or most depending on your belief)?
loading...
Hi Nak,
If you look at the very next comment after my original comment, it was an apology for my broad classification of the residents of Western Sydney.
How hard is it to see?
loading...
I do not wish to get into a debate with you about refuge policy in Australia. Or your personal views on Western Sydney.
In Blacktown we have a large Sudenese population who came to Australia as refuges and we all live alongside each other very well in my opinion. I object to blanket comments that bare no relation to my experience.
But my issue in relating to this web site and its procedures and/or the role of its moderator remains.
loading...
If the comment was defamatory to named persons it would naturally be removed. It was not. We allow pretty robust debate here, ID did not single you out in his comment.
loading...
Won’t let me reply below.
Yes I saw the apology. But if you had said “While most Australians prefer an on-shore refugee policy, *most of* those in Western Sydney don’t…” in this particular comment it would have been closer to what I think you mean. And more congruent with the apology itself.
loading...
“Will a full and unreserved apology be issued on the web site?”
You can’t possibly be serious with this? I am speechless!
loading...
I love how people NOT from the Wester Suburbs think that they have such a wonderful idea of what goes on there. Generalisations and stereotyping are horrible and reflective of insecurity and “fear” of the unknown. Stop the suburb snobbery.
loading...
Cool, except I used to live in the Western Suburbs.
I also immedaitely corrected my generalisation in the following comment.
I love how you ignore that.
loading...
I bet you’re the first person to be offended by something you read on the internet Naomi…Hahahaha
loading...
I raised an issue that I found offensive, and you believe me to be a figure of fun?
loading...
I do!
loading...
How sad about those animals! I read that of the almost 50 or so that were killed,18 of them were rare Bengal Tigers, of which there are only around 1400 left in the world.
I do not agree with the concept of small, private zoos.
loading...
And it wasn’t possible to fly in professional animal handlers who could dart the escapees? What an American reaction: to shoot them dead.
My mum always says “why would aliens land in America (like in all the movies) – if they’re such intelligent beings they’d know they’ll just be shot on arrival!”
loading...
They shoot kids in schools Every man and he’s dog owns a gun.
A few animals !! Ha, they don’t care As they say (We’re Americians we do as we please ).
loading...
Farewell Gaddafi! You were my favourite despot. What with your funny hats and clothes, your sexy female body guards and your personal (ahem) “nurse”…
Oh, yeah…and you were a complete bastard too…good riddance!
loading...
For some complex reason, this makes me very sad… humans, not matter how far from the ideal, are not caricatures… and modern retribution tactics make biblical times seem advanced.
Feeling very naive the last decade or so, what with having come to maturity with the end of the cold war and for a few glorious years believing in the UN, natural justice & human rights, ethics, and other such silly fantasies…
And, now, I will never get to use the unbelievable line: “I’ve made 3 of Gaddafi’s grandchildren cry” in the way I had one day hoped too. (True story. Ironically enough… and a few discussions with one his daughter’s-in-law a few years ago did make me realise that the world is not as ideal as we, and western media would like.)
Ghandi was right when he said that an “eye for an eye will make the whole world blind” …
I wonder if anybody will consider Libya a safer place to visit, live in or holiday to in the decades to come. Just bloody glad I am not living there… and pity those that do.
loading...
Yep – will own up to being totally glib about this…
When I heard the news this morning, I thought maybe I should post one of my moralistic comments about man’s inhumanity to man…but it’s such a beautiful day in Sydney this morning, and I’m in a good mood…so I went with glib…
Totally agree with everything you say, by the way…
loading...
But you give such good glib JJ….
loading...
The Middle East, culturally, isn’t that far removed from Biblical times or even biblical locations, so biblical vengence on tyrants is hardly surprising.
As for ‘will anyone consider Libya a safer place’ I answer 1) that is never a valid excuse for keeping a tyrant in place and 2) the National Transitional Council of Libya has made all the right noises you’d expect from a new Arab Spring Government.
They are forming a new constitution which will be held to popular vote, are paving the way to free democratic elections and have rejected racisim, terrorism and embraced political pluralism (only half of Australia currently believes in this, the other half ironically claim democracy has died) and the right of citizens to freely express themselves.
They’ve already created a new central bank and nationalised the oil companies.
Sure, they are technically in a civil war, but I don’t pity those living there, I admire them.
loading...
Totally off topic, but pyjamamel, I think I follow your blog (there was the possibility we may have moved to your part of the world at one point). If this is you, hope your new bubba is doing great! x
loading...
I didn’t mean to be sanctimonious, there JohnJames– normally I’m a huge fan of glib – but recent developments have installed a strong sense of „there for the grace of lucky geography go I“.
Idledad, I really, really hope you are right… and the latent idealist in me wishes to believe it – but I fear the Arab Spring won’t be bringing lasting stability for the every day people in the region in the forseeable future.
Flotsam, you follow my poor, long neglected blog? Wow! Thanks!
Bubs is good and he’s – eek- nearly 6 months old now. (Must update the blog – I do compose many posts in my head – but waste far too much time on reading other people’s, and also on this site truth be told! A brilliant place to keep up to date with a range of stuff back home and means I’m not always saying „what?who?how? when?“ when chatting with friends and family…
) This is quite a nice part of the world to end up in if you do get the chance again (albeit getting a touch chilly of late!)
loading...
One of my friends who loves conspiracy theories posted this link on his Facebook today. So I regard it as I would any conspiracy theory but do you think there is any truth in it? Hard to know from where I sit. And Idle Dad seems to think the creation of a new central bank is a good thing. I just don’t know…

“There are many other reasons why the Middle East incessantly bleeds now PLEASE PAY ATTENTION…
If all we know is what the TV and Media/News stations tell us then we truly know f*** all…! and were just being ignorant with no first hand knowledge to the situation or the information…
We can all make assumptions and we all have opinions but facts are divine by nature… And here are just a few…!
In 1951 Libya was the poorest country in the world.
Before the NATO Invasion, Libyan’s enjoyed the HIGHEST standard of living in Africa, ahead of Russia, Brazil, and Saudi Arabia
In Libya, homes are considered a Human Right, Gaddafi VOWED to house EVERY LIBYAN, before his own parents, he kept his word, and his father died before he was able to be housed.
Before Gaddafi, less than 1/5th of the Libyan’s where illiterate
Now education is FREE and HIGH QUALITY, and the literacy rate is 83%
Newly married couples are GIVEN $50,000 to buy their new home
Electricity and gas is FREE ! To ALL People
Health care is also free, and HIGH QUALITY, and if Libyan’s cannot find the education or health-care in Libya… Then the Libyan Government funds them to go abroad to access it
ALL LOANS are 0% INTEREST FREE… BY LAW…!
If a Libyan buys a car, the Government pays 50% of the price
The price of Gasoline is $0.14 (on the date the video was taken)
Any Libyan wishing to become a farmer is GIVEN FREE USE OF LAND, A HOME, EQUIPMENT, LIVESTOCK AND SEEDS…!
On 1st of July 2011, 1.7 MILLION People gathered and assembled on Green Square, Tripoli, to show defiance against the NATO Bombing of Libya, this represented about 95% of the population of Tripoli ,and about 1/3rd the total population of Libya
The Libya State Bank is STATE OWNED and unlike all the other banks in The West.
It is NOT owned by Rothschild, and it issues DEBT FREE MONEY.
In the 1990′s Libya was accused of being responsible for the bombing of PanAm Flight 103 “The Lockerbie Bombing” It has transpired that the US Government, paid ‘witnesses’ at the trial £4 MILLION DOLLARS EACH, to falsely testify against the accused Libyan Men.
Yes, they were PAID to lie, and have since recanted their evidence Gaddafi was also working to change payment for Libya’s oil and away from the $ Dollar, to the GOLD backed AFRICAN DINAR
This prompted Sarkozy to call Libya ” A Threat to the financial security of Mankind”
One of the first acts of the Libyan ‘Rebels’ was to create a NEW CENTRAL BANK, to one owned by the Rothschild, just like ours in the West are.
The Rothschild family are estimated to own more than HALF the WORLDS Wealth
It’s alleged that the Rothschild Owned Banks create money out of thin air and charge interest which can never be repaid…!
This is “The Green Book” by Muammar-Qaddafi. See it for yourself…?”

Why on earth would there be a need to photoshop Adam Levine ESPECIALLY his torso?
loading...
1. Because even his perfect torso wasn’t perfect enough .. or
2. same brave soul has decided to infiltrate the media and photoshop the hell out of everthing to show how stupid it is seeing as Kirsten Stewart lost an arm too?
Probably 1. but the rebel in me hopes it’s 2.
loading...
I can see where Kirsten’s forearm and hand could be (behind her leg) though?

Not sure it’s anatomically possible given where her upper arm is in relation to the rest of her body but you could be right …
There go my hopes for a subversive media infiltrator

So Julia Gillard says Tony Abbott is responsible for the end to off shore processing. I assume his popularity with readers of MM will soar as a result of this revelation by the PM.
loading...
If only it were that simple!
loading...
If anything, my resepect for Gillard has plumeted to new depths. She’s the PM, she’s the government, trying to blame the opposition for a boat arrival is not just bullshit, it looks so WEAK.
It’s like she’s a Liberal plant in the Labor party. It’s like she WANTS to lose the next election.
loading...
she’s lowering herself to his level with this finger-pointing.
The problem is, only his fans like him for it (and they’re sticking with him) and everyone else hates him for it, so it’s hardly going to work in her favour!
loading...
Secondly, MM readers aren’t that stupid. We may like the result, but Tony’s is still heartlessly cruel and playing base politics with people fleeing for their lives.
loading...
Actually the more that comes out of Ms Gillards mouth lately, the more i’m actually swinging towards Mr Abbot. Off shore processing is not going to stop desperate families wanting for a better life.
loading...
But Tony Abbott is pro-offshore processing. As soon has he has power, he’ll change the laws exactly the same way the PM just tried to do but failed (because neither the Greens or the Coalition would support Labor, the Greens because they’re against offshore processing, the Coalition because they’re against everything).
If you’re against offshore processing, you should be leaning left, not right.
loading...
