I don’t know why I did it. But I did.
At 1AM on Monday morning, I wrote an e-mail to the CEO of Australia’s leading brewery – a man I’d never met – asking for some help with stocking the eskies at my 21st birthday. Don’t laugh. I’m serious.
Winding down from a big weekend planning my birthday bash with my Dad, I was contemplating how I could help with the booze buying. It wasn’t something expected from his end, but something I wanted to do from mine. I figured that I’d stolen enough from his shed over the last four years – it was finally time to balance the books.
For a bloke just earning enough to pay rent in Sydney, paying for slabs to hydrate a hundred people wasn’t an option. But then, somewhere in my late night brainstorming session, trying to get the CEO of a ten-billion-dollar company to open up my e-mail and agree to send me a few free brews, seemed like a much more reasonable and rational idea.
I mean – the longest and most successful relationship I’ve ever had has been with one of their products – Carlton Draught. Surely they would remember the name of one of their most dedicated customers?
So before I could convince myself out of it, I wrote up my love letter, CCed in a few of his other corporate mates, and clicked send. And… low and behold… it bloody well worked! I’ll drink to that.
Check out the e-mail exchange below:
Morning Ari, Andy, Jeremy, Peter, Grant and Jennifer,
I’m Sean, a twenty-year-old fella from Northcote, Melbourne.
Please, throw away the board-papers, forget about the ten committee meetings you have to attend to today and stick with me. Even if you tell me to bugger off by the end of this e-mail, hopefully you’ll get a good laugh to start your week.
Ever since I turned the grand old age of eighteen I’ve drunk Carlton Draught (ok, maybe I started a little earlier). My mates were sceptics, “the poor man’s drink” they’d shout. It didn’t matter if you were cheaper – in their eyes Corona and Little Creatures were the only way to go. But having grown up in a house where only you were stocked, I couldn’t convert. So, I’ve stayed strong.
Over the last few years, I’ve drunk many a jug alone – unable to rope a mate in to split one. But slowly times are changing.
Slowly I’m helping convert the lads to your brand of brews. It started with a few free pints. In fact, my eighteenth birthday was only stocked with Carlton as a sign of protest. And now…it’s slowly becoming everyone’s drink of choice.
I am to Carlton Draught what Jennifer Hawkins is to Mount Franklin Sparkling Water – a brand ambassador. Now, here’s the bombshell. In around seven weeks I turn twenty-one. Yep, I’m becoming an adult.
And I know it’s rude to ask…but I was wondering… maybe after the love that I’ve shown your brand over the last four years (and I promise that I will moving forward too) you could help me out? And maybe… you could help hydrate the crowd?
It’s not going to be a huge affair – just family and friends that I love – and a random DJ that I found in the yellow-pages that I hope plays some good music.
My parents are my best mates and are bank rolling this night. My Old Man has been stalking Dan Murphy specials, and we’ve even set up a system to start stockpiling when Draught and Peroni are on special. What a Dad. He’s even started an Excel spreadsheet with the calculations to ensure there’s enough grog. Dry night equals a bad night.
But thanks to my unimpressive bank balance, there’s not a lot I can do to help him. But maybe you could? I promise we’ll drink responsibly.
I’ll Facebook, Tweet and stick a gigantic Carlton Draught flag in the backyard – anything to say thank-you to you for helping hydrate the crowd. And you’re more than welcome to come too, my Mum does a mean bread and dip platter – forget your corporate catering, this would knock your socks off.
I hope to hear back – even if it’s to tell me what a dickhead I am.
Your biggest fan,
Sean
And then, much to my surprise, this e-mail from the CEO of Fosters Group, the company responsible for Carlton Draught – Ari Mervis – arrived in my Inbox.
Hi Sean
Certainly have to admire your attitude, approach and obvious appreciation of a great beer.
While it’s not common practice to sponsor events of this nature, your efforts at supporting Carlton Draught should not go unnoticed, and I will ask Jennifer to assist by providing you with 10 cases of Carlton Draught, to help start the celebrations (and your father’s spreadsheet), as well as a limited edition Crown Ambassador CEO package, as gift from the Company.
I hope you have a really enjoyable birthday, and a memorable party.
Kind regards,
Ari
So, Mr Mervis from Fosters – thanks for reading my cheeky letter and for agreeing to help out. You sir, are a great bloke and deserve to be celebrated. It’s always a surprise when you realise that CEO’s of multi-billion dollar companies aren’t all wankers, and real people too.
I promise I’ll have a drink – or ten slabs worth – just for you. And if I can wash your car, walk your dogs or organise your shed, don’t hesitate to ask.
*Please note this isn’t a sponsored post, nor did Fosters Group have any idea that this post would ever be published.

May I simply just say what a relief to discover someone that actually knows what they are talking about on the net. You actually realize how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More people need to read this and understand this side of the story. I was surprised that you’re not more popular since you certainly have the gift.

Very shrewd CUB marketing indeed…

Sean, what a lucky guy you are. But why do links to this story appear to be retweeted every 2 hours? I don’t think this story is amazing enough to warrant such attention!!
Enough please!
loading...
Well, Fosters have to get people to drink their swill somehow, don’t they..:-)

Best customer service I received was from a watch company called WeWood (Eco friendly watches made from wood – yes, awesome). My watch was a gift and had only spent a few hours on my wrist on Christmas day when a link broke. I emailed the company asking if/where I could buy a replacement link and not only did they reply offering one free of charge, they came to my house to collect the watch, took it away to fix it, and then returned it to me the following day. Now that’s what I call customer service!

This made me smile. What a lovely and generous response – and they will have more than 1 customer for life. Enjoy your party!

If I was that CEO, I would be offering you a job. Brilliant letter- funny and smart! Have a great 21st!
loading...
That was exactly what I was thinking.
This guy has a vision and he makes it happen. What a great example of an employee that I would want to have in my business.

Great story Carlton’s on the menu tonite

Now you should write to Mount Franklin and see if you can convince them to lend you Jen Hawkins for your 21st!
Loved this piece!

i have drunk from the CUB cup all my drinking life, ( about 30 odd years) yet never recieved one kickback from them, much less a free beer, no hats no stubby coolers nothing, i find this a tad to hard to believe.
loading...
Did you ever ask them?

Sean, this is absolutely golden. Marry me. I want to be Mrs. Power.

And have a child named Max!

I worked in radio for a few years. I’m sorry but this sounds very much like a creative marketing campaign as opposed to a knockabout bloke’s feel good story. Call me a cynic
loading...
A cynic you are. I can confirm that’s 100% not the case. Feel free to contact me on Twitter if you’ve got any more questions.

I’ll order a Carlton draught next time I’m at the pub and drink to a generous CEO. Your investment of 10 cases has paid great dividends. If only more executives could remember their customers are real people, great job! Happy birthday too Sean!

I’m helping to organize a fundraiser for a colleague diagnosed with cancer – Despite our best efforts, we have had very poor response receiving any sort of support or donation from large retail chains or restaurants. It has been incredibly disheartening, as since the event is being held for one person, their assistance cannot be validated. A certain prominent retail chain had the nerve to ask how they would be marketed on the night, and then reject my application as it didn’t suit them.
We would love 10 slabs of beer for our fundraiser!
Well done Sean, such a great piece of writing, worked a charm
Good on Fosters for being so generous

That is freskingnawesome. I love good-will gestures. And I’m totally going to buy a Carlton draught next time I’m at the pub!

My secret weapon for free beer and cheap wine is to marry a person that works at the local brewery, who as part of his employment package, receives a free beer issue regularly and as a shareholder is entitled to wine discounts.
Works for us.

I too appreciate the malt of a cold Carlton. Unfortunately. Carlton Sterling was my brew of choice. Pretty sure that the Carlton CEO knows who I am because I seem to have been their only regular Sterling customer and they ceased production 8 months ago:(.

PASS IT FORWARD MATE !!
ONE DAY .. SOMEONE YOU DON’T KNOW WILL ASK YOU FOR HELP .. IT COULD BE IN PERSON .. OR IT COULD BE SOMEONE NEEDING THE COMMUNITY TO HELP SOMONE ELSE …
REMEMBER HOW A STRANGER HELPED YOU WITH YOUR 21ST .. AND IF YOUR IN THE POSITION TO DO SO .. PASS HIS KINDNESS TO YOU .. ONTO SOMEONE ELSE .. AND ASK THEM TO PASS YOUR KINDNESS ONTO SOMEONE ELSE ONE DAY WHEN THEY ARE IN A POSITION TO DO SO …
THEN YOUR AMAZING BIRTHDAY PRESENT FROM A STRANGER WILL LIVE ON AND BENEFIT MANY
PASS IT 4WARD …AND HAPPY 21ST .. AND PLEASE DON’T LET THIS RANDOM KINDNESS DIE WITH YOUR HANGOVER WHEN ALL THE BEER HAS BEEN SCULLED … CHEERS

Great advice Greg – always important to remember to treat others like ya would want to be treated.

Sean, that is awesome. As a bar owner I have been a little surprised at the amount of Carlton Draught stubbies I have moved per week over the past three or so years. My previous experience has shown that traditionally Coronas, Asahi, Crown etc are bigger sellers. I could never quite work out why this venue has had a change in trend. Maybe it’s just that lovely blokes like you are turning of age and refusing to give in to marketing/peer pressure? Love your work
loading...
Carltons all round I say! Thats what I’ll be ordering at my next pub night. Great story..
loading...
I love it Sean – I hope you have a wonderful birthday and the cases help! You don’t get if you don’t ask – keep asking questions as you move forward from 21. Happy 21st – I remember it as one of the best!

Great post. Made me smile. Happy 21st birthday Sean. Maybe I will try a Carlton Draught.
loading...
How many people are now kicking themselves and wishing they had done the same. I turn 31 in a few weeks, do you think Veuve Clicquot will show me the same kindness?? Have an awesome birthday Sean, hope the party goes well, and does your mum do the bread and spinach dip platter? It’s one of my favourites, always a winner!

fabulous

Love it! And I love Carlton Draught.
I have been consistently ridiculed for my beer of choice (as a young, famale corporate), but I earned my stripes working events where the crew would drink draught til sun-up.
loading...
Wow, Sean, wonder if you’ve thought of how you’ll ger Jennifer to the party as well. Now THAT would be a win! Well done, if I was CEO I’d do the same thing. Your letter would be the most interesting thing to cross his desk all day!

Very impressed at ur cheek Sean but ONYA

Great email Sean and great response from the company. Awesome all round

I think the above is brilliant but I think it does say a lot about our culture when “a dry night is a bad night” is considered appropriate and alcohol is considered “hydrating” when it’s really quite the opposite. I know it’s tongue-in-cheek but there was something borderline-concerning about the attitude to alcohol in it!
loading...
oh for crying out loud – it’s a 21st! you’re supposed to get trollied and laid and fall over and hurt y’self. it’s the rules.
loading...
What a ridiculous comment Michelle D. You obviously have no idea of the pain inflicted on families who have lost loved ones due to one night of fun being drunk. Grow up and think before you comment.
loading...
What do you want them to do, sit around drinking lattes playing boardgames? seriously, can’t anyone enjoy their 21 st now? Go for it , and have a great night with all your family and friends. Happy 21 st Birthday Sean!!
loading...
That is awesome, way to go Sean!! If you don’t ask you don’t get!!
loading...
Sean, I think after this post has run you’re going to have a few (hundred) more besties to invite to the party. Might want to ask Mr Mervis for more beer?
Top post

Fab post Sean. Let us know your address so I can come drink some free beer
loading...
That’s awesome! Good on you Sean!
Your dad sounds like a great bloke as well, If he’s like my dad he was probably just as excited adding the freebies into the spreadsheet as getting them
loading...
I love it! What a great attitude and what a fanatstic forward thinking CEO.

When I was 8 I wrote a letter to the manufacture who made these little bottle of sherbet that I loved. I can’t remember why I did it exactly but, I received in the mail a box of about 100 sherbet bottles!! I was the most popular kid in the neighbour hood. Free sherbet for everyone!

I remember the sherbet bottles! My teeth hurt thinking about them

That’s awesome! Love seeing examples of great customer service.
Has anyone ever noticed Kikki K has amazing customer service? I shop there frequently and I’ve never had a bad experience, they’re always so helpful and lovely without being overbearing. I remember once visiting the Melbourne airport branch, grumpy and sleep-deprived – the shop attendant cheered me up immensely and completely made up for the horrible flight I’d just had!
loading...
Yes I adore Kikki K! They’re always so happy to have a chat without being overbearing which I love.
loading...
I love Kikki K too! I was in there twice last week buying up big and the shop assistant remembered me and put me on the list to get a centre discount.
loading...
Good luck Kikki K – I don’t know how they are going to sustain their ridiculous price point with Typo in the market…….
loading...
Hopefully they manage, I love Kikki K! Their quality is far superior to Typo, and the customer service is far better too. I’ve been into a few Typo stores and they never feel very welcoming…
loading...
What she said! I’ve bought from Typo maybe once and browsed a few times. Never been impressed by the quality or the general crowded/unwelcoming atmosphere in the store. The two stores probably have different target demographics anyway, not to say there isn’t a cross over.
loading...
A someone who has spent HUNDREDS in Kikki-K, I actually find their quality worse than Typo, who I’ve now switched to for all items except for bags and satchels (which Kikki-k still do better, I think). I am a stationery freak.
loading...
I had great service at Kikki K too. I wrote a letter to them about how awesome the chick who served me was.
loading...
Kiki K have always been nice, love shopping there. It is pricey but I will continue to shop there as I find Typo a bit teeny bopper. Kiki K is a bit more stylish and mature.
loading...
This is why I love mamamia! The fact you can have an awesome post like this, get a varied readership, and then change the topic from beer to stationary
such a good community

Dodgy choice of beer but FANTASTIC story! I pity his PA and all the crappy copy cat emails that he will now be sent!
Happy Birthday!
loading...
Love it, Sean!!
Love your choice of beer too!
Happy birthday!
loading...
This totally just gave me an idea for my 21st!
loading...
Is this a poorly disguised advertisment for the above mentioned beer?
loading...
Meh, always a good idea to read the entire post – check out the last few lines please. “Please note this isn’t a sponsored post, nor did Fosters Group have any idea that this post would ever be published.”

Mate, way to go. I’m not a fan of their brew (my Father-in-Law designs their bottling lines), but I admire your ingenuity.
Have a great 21st – you’re also getting attention from all teh hit chicks on here – way to go !!
loading...
you always write so well Sean, and seem like such a likeable young man with a level of maturity many others lack. Have a happy birhtday. (I hope this doesnt prompt to many copy cat emails – the Carlton CeO may not be too happy then!)

I organise a charity dance event once a year for Frocktober (as an aside, Mamamia should really do a Frocktober article in a month or so). Last year I had a fantastic silent auction with all sorts of brilliant prizes up for grabs. When people were amazed I told them that all I did was ask. And in my case all the funds raised were going to ovarian cancer research!
Any Canberrans who want to come this year, check out my blog http://blithemoments.blogspot.com.au/

When I was a 14 year old schoolgirl, many moons ago, I was part of a program at school who were setting up businesses on paper. I wanted to design wedding dresses but also offer a full bridal service (this is 30 years ago when wedding planners weren’t really heard of). I rang a whole host of lace and ribbon manufacturers and got so many samples that Mum still has a box of the stuff. And she’s the crafty one – I gave up when I couldn’t draw well enough to get into the course I needed for Fashion Design! I’ll always remember the lady who didn’t dismiss me – Melinda

I did something similar to get my daughter, with a very late application, into a very selective local pre school. I wrote a cute/cheeky letter from her(she was 3 1/2) listing her interests and “hobbies”(pinching and squealing at my sister, playing at the park and decorating our porch with glitter glue) and attached a photo. Did the trick.
Good on you for having the Chutspah(sp?)
