Time for some light relief. UK sculptor Jamie McCartney is soon to unveil his masterpiece, called The Great Wall Of Vagina. It began as a more modest project called called Design A Vagina but then he expanded it to include 400 individual casts of vaginas (the vulva area to be exact) which will soon be displayed on a wall at the Brighton Festival Fringe. Here’s a preview:

.
There really is no better person to explain this project than the artist himself who says on his website:
“For this, my latest major sculpture, I cast, over the course of 5 years, the vaginas (well the vulva area in fact) of hundreds of volunteers. The Great Wall of Vagina is an exploration of women’s relationships with their genitals.
When I assembled the first panel of 40 casts, arranged in a grid, I stepped back disappointed. I realised the sculpture would need to be much bigger to have the impact I wanted. From this original piece (called Design A Vagina) has grown an epic sculpture. The final piece now has 400 casts arranged in 10 panels of 40.
“Why did I do it and what’s it all about?” I hear you ask. Well, vulvas and labia are as different as a faces and many people, particularly women, don’t seem to know that. Men tend to have seen more than women, who have often only seen their own, and many have never looked that closely. Hence the exposure of so many, showing the variety of shapes is endlessly fascinating, empowering and comforting.
For many women their genitals are a source of shame rather than pride and this piece seeks to redress the balance, showing that everyone is different and everyone is normal.
The sculpture comments on the trend for surgery to create the ‘perfect’ vagina. This modern day equivalent of female genital mutilation is a bizarre practice which suggests that one is better than another. Taste in nothing is universal and any desire for ‘homogyny’ could be very misguided.
Vulva Sculptor James McCartney
360 casts arranged in this manner is in no way pornographic, as it might have been if photographs had been used. One is able to stare without shame but in wonder and amazement at this exposé of human variety.
For the first time for many women they will be able to see their own genitals in relation to other women’s. In doing so they may dispel many misconceptions they may have been carrying about what women look like ‘down there’. The sculpture is serene and intricate and it works on many levels. A UK tour is in the planning stages [no word yet on an Australian tour - Ed]
Included are examples of male to female and female to male transsexuals, a virgin, a porn star and some women with some elaborate piercings.
Ages so far range from 18 year old students to a grandmother of 76. I really wanted to include as many possibilities as I could. I spent the entire 5 years seeking a victim of female genital mutilation who would like to be included but sadly without success. The more inclusive and complete I could be in this survey the more power this sculpture would have.”
Remember the post we shared about the very not-safe-for-work requirement of vaginas to be digitally altered under Australian law? That’s what Jamie’s artwork is all about. Showing the individuality of the vagina.
There’s artistic merit here in that Jamie says vaginas from around the world have cultural nuances. A vagina in Asia is not the same as a vagina in Europe and so on. They’re vaginas, but they’re not the same.
Watch a little behind the scenes of the whole vagina casting here:
Any questions? Yes? Oh, well here are Jamie’s frequently asked:
Who does the casting?
I take all the body moulds myself. How does it work?
I apply the moulding materials to your vulva, it sets in about a minute and then I remove it and pour plaster into this mould to make the finished cast. How long does it take?
It only takes about five minutes, it’s very quick.A Labia Of Love
Do I have to be shaved?
No not necessarily. Hair produces less good results so a close trim is better than the full bush! Shaving does produce the best results but it really is up to you.Does the plaster pull out any hair?
Not usually. I don’t use plaster and I also use a release agent to stop that happening.Does it hurt?
Not at all. Most people describe it as an unusual or interesting sensation, bordering on pleasant! What do you use?
I use a material called alginate. It is a seaweed based powder that when mixed with water sets into a rubber in about a minute. Is it safe?
Alginate is designed to be used inside the mouth by dentists and is completely skin safe.Do you pay?
No, it’s voluntary. I want people to do it who like the concept. Can I bring my partner?
Of course. You can bring anyone along you like. Bring a few friends and you can all encourage each other.
So. Any thoughts? Do you think it’s important for women to know what other women look like?

Why the fuck is this NSFW? It’s like… is Manet’s Olympia NSFW? Is Courbet’s The Origin of the World NSFW?? I mean look at all the implied penises everywhere haha. But you put some realish vaginas on a wall and it’s like “oh no she didn’t”

I have found the ‘Great Wall of Vagina’ to be an excellent resource.
I show it to women who are concerned that their vulvas are not normal. When they see “this expose of human variety” they understand that “vulvas and labia are as different as faces” and that brings relief through normalising.

A woman comments on Regretsy.com that Jamie tries to have sex with all the women who do this so .. be warned! Makes you wonder which is more important, the great wall or the conquests.
In the Philadelphia Museum of Art there is a Great Wall of Vaginas piece, been there a long time. Nothing new under the sun..

Did anyone have as much fun as me trying to find their ‘Vagina-like’? The real point to all this is that you’ll never find an exact match. Doesn’t mean it isn’t fun to try!

I’ve wanted to make a self-cast for a whilie now, my mother and boyfriend think I’m strange! Not the Vulva as such, more the standing-front-on view.
Not sure why, it just intrigues me, not to mention I am very fond of my real one. Would keep it somewhere private though, like on the wall of my bedroom lol

I think is a great idea! We are all different and indeed should be proud of our very individual vaginas! Good on you James I salute you on your brilliant idea~!

Yuck!! No thanks

Thank you! What an amazing and creative sculpture this is! I loved Judy Chicago’s Dinner Party at and I love this one! What a wonderful celebration! The depth of my THANK YOU is far beyond the ability of words to describe.

I am actually very glad to have seen this. It puts my mind at ease. I always considered my goods unattractive. Not having been exposed to much porn, and having seen no one elses, I really didn’t know how I compared. Now I know that anyone seeing my snapper would consider the experience pretty uneventful, and I have nothing to worry about. In fact I can now confidently jump up on the Gynie table without dread. Thanks Mamamia!

Although I really like his work, I was very disappointed to see Jamie quoted as saying “360 casts arranged in this manner is in no way pornographic, as it might have been if photographs had been used.”
Surely the objective of showing women that everyone is different and everyone is normal – that women should be proud rather than ashamed of their uniqueness could be achieved with photography just as well as castings?
As a fellow sculptor and photographer, I am disppointed to see an inferrence that the selection of media can be seen as the delineation between art and porn

My guess would be that this isn’t a reflection of what he personally sees as “pornographic”, so much as what society deems as pornographic. We have seen in numerous stories that the media classification board has a huge problem with showing pink bits in magazines!!!

I think that AlyssaKT is talking about this great documentary:

I saw this (James McCartney’s project) a few years ago in a UK documentary about women and sexuality.
After watching the show I would have volunteered; he was really good-natured and made the women feel very comfortable.
I think it’s important for women to see other women’s vulvas, as the air-brushed or surgically altered ones are disproportionately represented.
I’d like young men to see these too – as the porn industry is responsible for fostering in them so many misconceptions about women’s genetalia, sexual desires and behaviours.
I commend this wonderful and fascinating project and would love to see it!

Really? Actually really? He actually did this? Oh my goodness gracious! I have nothing to add!

I think it is awesome!!!! Actually saw a documentary a while ago called “The Designer Vagina” and I think this artwork was included in it. I think it is very sad that people think they need to change their ‘lady bits’ to fit some Barbieish notion of beauty. A sad sign of the times I guess. But I think it is a good idea for many women to actually see what other women look like ‘down there’ and realise that they dont need to conform to this ideal of perfection that our culture pushes in every area. Uniqueness and individuality is what makes life interesting.

I Agree I have never met a vagina Ii did not like some might have been more accommodating but over all they are all beautiful. I have heard there is a Japanese sexual proclivity to stare at vaginas and I believe they call it staring at infinity or the oblivion. The begging of life, and center of the universe.
loading...
I just read this article out to my partner, his comment? “Well I am going to make the acropoldicks”.
loading...
Is this the same artwork that featured in the opening exhibit at MONA in Hobart? If so, it was an amazing exhibit. Slightly wierd initially to be looking at with so many people (maybe that’s my inner prude!) but really striking as a work of art.
loading...
Seeing the art I’m reminded of the one about the fool who thought that genitalia was the national airline of Italy.
loading...
If the artist can knock me up one that lipsyncs “The Hallejulah Chorus”, I’d be happy to pop up a panel on one of my walls !
Keeping with the musical theme…a couple of panels would look great at the top of a pipe organ.

If you remember the tune, please sing along with me.

This is a fantastic blog and I have thoroughly enjoyed reading everyone’s comments.
I grew up in an error/household of sex and sexuality being swept under the rug. It was so hard and I had so many questions. I was to afraid to tell my mother I had started menstruating let alone wanting to know about love making.
My beautiful Mother was not a bad person she just never new how to talk openly about these things. Being shoved off to an orphanage at the age of 5 never really having the opportunity herself to be able to be open about nakedness, sexuality etc.
I am very open and believe it is important to be able to feel confidently comfortable and free to ask or talk about what is so beautiful and natural.
Thank you
xxx

I grew up in a similar household as you Julie. In another amazing coincidence my mother was also put into an orphanage at 5 years of age (as well as one of her brothers but they were returned to my grandmother 5 years later).
Although Mum never spoke about sex with us she did buy a couple of books for us to read “What is happening to me” and I think the other one was “Where did I come from”. There was another book that also showed couples in various sexual positions I think it was the Karma Sutra. But still whenever sex came on the TV the house became uncomfortable silent (usually an impossible feat with a family of 6 – 4 daughters!)! Sometimes the channel was changed or if Dad wanted to watch the movie we were told to leave the room!
Now I’m a Mum of two curious girls and I am bombarded with questions and I do my best to answer them without being too graphic as they are only 10 and 6. Only yesterday my eldest asked me if you can get Aids from a cucumber? Thank you Glee!!! I also turn off the radio whenever Rhianna’s new song comes on.

Craaazzy! are we to be judgemental about everything visible on a human body, it really turns my stomach.. Hey when we run out of things to obsess on the outside maybe we can start obsessing about the interior.. does my bowel look too big in these?.

Haha, I think this post had the opposite effects to me. From the outside I’ve always been happy with my vulva and thought it was neat enough and definitely normal. But after seeing all of these I thought I would take a photo from the angle he’s cast them and now I’m not feeling so confident. Why is it asymmetrical?! The rest of my body isnt! Photo has been deleted now and I will pretend it didnt happen hahaha.
loading...
I saw a doco about this project. There were women who were incredibly self-conscious about their ‘ugly’ vaginas, including some who were considering labiaplasty. Having their vaginas cast was extremely liberating for these women, who realised that they were normal, and beautiful, and that there was no need for surgery.
Yes, vaginas are funny looking, but then so are penises, and so are ears, and so are armpits, and so are many areas of our bodies. Projects like this help to normalise the human body, and help us accept ourselves as we are. Fabulous.
loading...
Purely from my point of view….but I’ve yet to see an ugly vagina !
However…I have seen some rather ugly willies in the men’s changerooms over the years.
loading...
Bradley, you’re suppposed to avert your eyes in the changeroom!
loading...
A couple of them look rather familiar !
loading...
Oh Bradley you are on fire tonight!!
loading...
At first, I thought “oh, this is Mia’s naughty bits obsession” (Sorry, Mia). Upon reflection, it was really interesting to see that no two are alike. It would be nice if all the gals who are contemplating surgery to change themselves into the “porn approved” version of genitalia could see this rich diversity.
If it’s too rude, then just ignore the article. I often do that when the article is something of no interest, too close to home or will upset me.
There is value in demystifying the hidden sometimes. So, thanks Mia and co.
loading...
I feel sad that we use the words “naughty bits” to describe a part of our bodies.
loading...
I wonder….. if you got the cast done, would you recognise your own?
loading...
Well, I had to get my husband to select the one in the photo that closest resembled mine. He’s seen it more than I have.
loading...
I feel like I could if it were front on, like how I see it in my mirror. But these castings are a little bit more “open” than I would normally see it.
loading...
Great question! Have no Idea, and that doesn’t mean I don’t know what I look like it just would be from a different angle.
loading...
What a great gift idea for the man who has everything! lol
loading...
Ha! Next Father’s Day gift?!
loading...
Woah… What a waste of time.
loading...
I completely disagree, I think it is important for women to have some context to place their own genitalia in. Far too many of us go through life with only porn stars surgically altered vaginas to compare ourselves with.
I celebrate this artist – what a great and empowering work of art it is. Yonis are the giver of life and should be celebrated much more than they are.
loading...
I linked this to my facebook. All the girls that commented said things like ‘Wow I love this’ and ‘Every woman should see this’ and ‘I’ve decided I have a beautiful vagina’.
I’d say.. not a waste of time at all.
loading...
Why a waste of time? I believe this essential, many women have no idea what they look like. Not something to be ashamed of we should be very proud and loving of our whole being.
loading...
Gah! I could have lived my whole life without seeing this. My eyes! My eyes!
loading...
I’m not a prude in any sense of the word, but I just don’t see a need for this. I also think that if this came to Australia, the majority of the people that would go see it would go to have a giggle while looking at the ‘rude bits’.
Do we have to put everything on display these days? Again, im in no way a prude. I just don’t see a need to walk into a gallery and see a bunch of vulva’s staring back at me.
loading...
Yep. Call me old-fashioned, but I’m with you Wallflower.
loading...
If you scroll down and read the comments by singleinoz and anonforthis you’ll see that some women are extremely insecure about their genitalia. Thinking they are completely different to the bulk of the female population. That something is ‘wrong’ with them. If it makes one woman realise that there is a massive range of normal, then it’s worth it.
“A bunch of vulvas” – I wonder what the collective known for vulvas is??
loading...
Haha – could it be a gaggle of vaginas, a fistful of vaginas, a pride of vaginas, a herd of vaginas?
loading...
A posse of vulvas??
loading...
Please say I’m not the only one to think: “a posse of pussies” after reading your suggestion… Please!!!
loading...
I like PRIDE and POSSE!
What about a CROTCH of vulvas?
loading...
I don’t know what you’d call a collective of vulvas, either. But this work is certainly the vanguard of vaginas.
loading...
or a clutch of vaginas
loading...
I’d only be concerned if one of them winked at me as I viewed the work.
loading...
I agree. Yucky
loading...
incredibly important
loading...
Vulva’s “from around the world have cultural nuances!”
I am now curious to see the differences between Asian, European & other races! And before & after childbirth!
loading...
I want to know the difference between a virgin and a non-virgin.
loading...
Me too.. I thought I was the only one
loading...
Hey Kris
You should take a photo before you give birth & then again after it’s all settled down, so you can compare them to see the changes! lol
loading...
Yeah I thought of that, actually! I can understand pre and post baby differences, but pre and post sex? I don’t think it would make that much difference really.
loading...
would there be any difference? I don’t think mine changed.
loading...
It appears that none are labelled… I’d like to know ages, races, mothers, etc.
But I suppose that’s for us to guess?
loading...
interesting and thought provoking.
i was so appalled by the episode of hungry beast that talked about how vagina’s had to be digitally altered to appear in magazines. no wonder we have such warped ideas.
i find them all ugly. i know that might be a bad thing to say but i just do!
good work jamie!
loading...
Wow!
I have actually been very insecure about this area of my body for some time (and I know it is irrational) this post definitely reminds me that i am very much normal.
Thanks so much!

Not safe for work.
loading...
I like Not Safe For Whimps. It’s much more interesting
loading...
I don’t know if this comes out as mean or anything, but looking at some of those casts, i think my vagina looks pretty damn awesome.
loading...
So the judging starts.
I think this is all a bit ridiculous really. Why do I care what my vulva look like? Or what anyone else’s look like? No-one is going to see it. (well almost no-one)
At least Anon was upfront enough to say out loud what I’ll bet many think to themselves about the display – from good to gross… be honest. Out loud: “Oh isn’t it wonderful that there are sooo many different ones out there..how liberating!” To self: “thank God mine doesn’t look like THAT one!!”
That we “need” to know that ours isn’t abnormal says a lot about the whole body image thing doesn’t it?
I am happy to say I have never given a second of thought as to what another woman’s vulva look like. I don’t care.
loading...
Maybe the point is not so much about caring what another woman’s vulva looks like – but more caring about how you feel about your own. It’s not judging others but allowing yourself to think that you’re not so abnormal.
I have had trouble crossing my legs in jeans for as long as i can remember.
For me this was an awesome post
thanks MM
loading...
Not sure how this has helped you cross your legs in jeans. A visit to a gyno would be more helpful I would have thought and they have seen plenty, so should be able to reassure you (or help you if necessary).
I know none of the above look like me cause I can’t see any hair anywhere. So are all the females who go to see it (some very young I’m assuming) going to feel the pressure to remove their hair too? Ironically that’s the one thing that is the same in these women and it is something that our body image obsessed society can add to their list.
Also I was responding to Anon’s : “looking at some of those casts, i think my vagina looks pretty damn awesome.” That is judging. Like an 80kg woman looking at a 100kg woman and saying, hey I don’t look so bad after all.
loading...
they are in plaster…there’s no hair on plaster….
loading...
The word ‘ pussy ‘ for some reason creeps me out. I can say the C word though.
Would that guy get turned on by doing this to these women I wonder ?
Cool idea though.
loading...
I think it is awesome!
What a great idea.
I’m a bit surprised that he managed to get so many girls and women, and such a large range, to do it though. I think I would be too shy – I always see a female doc to get things like pap smears done. Maybe I am just a big wuss though. I don’t have anything against having a guy (doc or artist) go there, I’m just a bit of a chicken. Will probably have to get over that if I ever decide to have kids, I know!
Good on him anyway and good on all the volunteers.
loading...
Getting a cast made of your fanny looks a lot less invasive than having a pap smear done!
loading...
ah i need to get one done but dont want to
loading...
Just do it. I have never found them particularly troublesome. Too important not to!
loading...
Absolutely – if you are uncomfortable, then visit a lady doctor. I have had both male and female doctors do them though and have generally found that the males have done it very gently. I have known other women to say that same. But do it, they are literally over within seconds and you will wonder what all the fuss was about.
loading...
Is this the part where I tell the story of how I made a speculum fly across the examining table? Or would that be TMI?
loading...
Wow – that would really require some spectacular pelvic floor muscles! What kind of p.f exercises are you doing?!!
loading...
(sings) I was only nineteen…
loading...
I love this post and I really admire the women who got their bits and pieces out to do it. I think we all need to be reminded that we’re all the same but different and that there is not right or wrong way to look. Thanks for posting.
loading...
It’s very important that we all know what we look like so that we can get rid of that shame the artist was talking about.
I remember one of the magazines I used to read did a huge montage of boobs – all different sizes and shapes – and that very much helped my shy and embarrassed 18 year old self realise we’re all so different and that’s ok.
loading...
I remember that montage! I agree, for me it was “hey wow, at least 3 of these people have large areola like me. I’m not so weird after all”
loading...
Feeds curiosity and nothing more in my opinion. If anything, it’s only after looking at these pictures that I start to wonder how mine compares….otherwise i can’t say i spare my fanny much thought. They’re pretty ugly regardless aren’t they?
If this helps some people though, I suppose it’s a good thing. It is sad to think that some women worry about every aspect of how they look – right down to the most private and personal body part.
loading...
I don’t think they’re ugly.
loading...
No, I don’t either. And I find that if you’re with the right partner they’ll tell you that yours is beautiful.

You can already see an exhibit like this in MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) in Hobart, Tasmania. It is called C****… And Other Conversations’ by artist Greg Taylor (I put * for the first word incase it offends people, it doesn’t offend me, just to be clear)
It has 150 vaginas and I have seen it. I walked passed it over and over again in utter amazement at just how different each vagina is.
I will be back in Tas over Easter and will be taking my children to MONA. They know of the wall and I hope they are not too embarrassed to see this exhibit.
It is not offensive, or pornographic and I have no issues with my kids viewing it one boy, 12 and one girl, 10.
So, no this is not completely new. It has been done already. It is a great thing to have a view of vaginas outside the world of porn.
loading...
Have also seen this exhibition in Hobart. We read that they tell curious kids the casts are ‘mushrooms’!!!
loading...
Mushrooms! That’s so sad.
loading...
My kids already know what the wall is. I have explained it to them. Mushrooms? How sad.
loading...
what on Earth are you thinking, Alissa?? Please allow your children to have a full education, and not a prude, limited one.
loading...
she actually said “we read that…” not that she told her own children that
loading...
oh! My apologies to Alissa – thank you for pointing that out sneakysparkle! I didn’t know I was so bad at reading!
loading...
So you saw 150 maps of tazzie in tazzie?
loading...
Ohh, Naomi, you’re good, I would never take my 14son & 11daughter to see that exhibition. Surely there are more historical/better things to see in Tassie? There’s plenty of time for them to become better acquainted, as they say, with the Map of Tasmania. Let children be children!
loading...
I am well aware of what Tassie has to offer. I lived there for over 20 years. My children were born there and all our extended family live there still.
MONA is something the whole of Australia should be proud of. A world class museum and art gallery. Free to the public.
As one of my children is a female, I think she is fairly well acquainted with vaginas and vulvas. My other child is a male, and I want him to see this, not porn in a magazine or online. I want them both to know we are all different and that the body is not something to objectify and snigger at.
Yes they are children and as such I want them to be educated on sex and on what the human body REALLY looks like, not just what sanitised, one size fits all media portray it as.
loading...
Well said Naomi, I totally agree with you! communication and god education is so so important.
x
loading...
I meant good education !!!
loading...
14 and 11 are hardly children who need to be children and their innocence preserved. I’ll put money on it your son has at least had the opportunity to view porn if he hasn’t already. Although I’m sure he’d be totally honest if you asked him about it.
loading...
Naomi, you beat me to it, I was going to mention this exhibit at Mona. It is fabulous and I recommend it to everyone, I will be taking my children to see it, they ar 11 (boy) 8 and 5 (girls), why is it any different to an elbow? If we squirm and hide it from them then surely they will associate the vagina with shame and embaressment. Not in our house, Vag’s dick’s all good!
loading...
Has this been done before? I’m getting déjà vu! Regardless, great concept.
It’s fantastic to have a proper scope of what vaginas/vulvas really look like outside the realm of porn.
loading...
it was part of a documentary on sbs about genital plastic surgery and the increasing rates of it in the UK. very interesting and very thought-provoking. also kind of sad.
