1. Ryan Lochte only has time for “one-night stands”.
The mother of 27-year-old US swimming champion Ryan Lochte has spoken quite candidly about her son’s dating habits. Ike Lochte said her son has one night stands because he is “too busy to commit” and is “always on the go”.
Ike’s words come after Ryan spoke about his dating techniques with Women’s Heath magazine. He said: “Some guys keep staring but I’ll give a wink and come back later because it keeps her thinking.” Well, ah, he sounds like a keeper.
What happens when you bring 10,000 extremely fit young men and women, who hardly have time to socialise in their every day lives together in one place for a fortnight? Sex. That’s what.
Thousands of free condoms will be available in the Athlete’s village during the 2 weeks of the Olympics and according to some athletes – they’ll be in high demand.
Shana Mullin, a British beach volleyballer has said “the Olympics is the height of your career, so you might do some things you don’t usually do”.
3. Aussie rower goes on drunken rampage
Twenty-one-year-old Australian rower Josh Booth has been arrested after he allegedly went on an ‘alcohol-fueled rampage’ through the streets of London. The Melbourne student made his Olympic debut in the men’s eight this week – the team unfortunately finished last in yesterday’s final.
According to the ABC: “Australian officials say Booth apparently took out his disappointment on three shopfronts in the village of Egham, in Surrey, in the early hours of the morning. Booth allegedly climbed up onto a second floor veranda and kicked in a glass door. A nearby window is also said to have been shattered.” Australian Olympic officials are yet to decide if they’ll take action against Booth.
4. 18-year-old Jessica Fox wins silver.
Jessica Fox, an 18-year-old journalism student from Sydney, has won the silver medal in the kayaking. Her mother, Myriam, won a bronze medal in the event 16 years ago and her father, Richard, was one of the UK’s best ever canoeists.
In other Olympic news overnight, cyclists Anna Meares and Kaarle McCulloc claimed bronze in the women’s team sprint, shooter Russell Mark shooter finished 20th in the men’s double trap and in rowing, the men’s lightweight four narrowly missed out on a medal.
Finally, American swimmer Michael Phelps made history when he won gold in the 200m individual medley. It’s his 16th Olympic gold medal and the third time Phelp’s has won the 200m IM at an Olympics.
5. UPDATE: Saudi Arabia’s judo champion WILL wear a hijab at the Olympics.
London is the first Olympics in which Saudi Arabia has allowed women athletes to compete. To that we say, about bloody time.
And one of those athletes, Wodjan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shahkrhani will be competing today in the judo competition.
It was thought that she would have no choice but to compete without a hijab, after the ruling was made that she should not be allowed to cover her head during the competition as it would be against the ‘principle and spirit of judo’.
However, news.com.au is now reporting: “An agreement was reached after several days of IOC-brokered talks between the International Judo Federation and the Saudi Olympic Committee that clears the way for her to compete in the heavyweight division”
She’s wear a special form of headscarf that respects the “cultural sensitivity” of the Muslim religion.
She’s competing tonight at 6:30pm (AEST)
And finally… we’re loving the way the Aussies are using social media to keep us updated on what’s happening. Here’s a look at the photos they’ve been uploading via Twitter.

Well Mathew Mitcham just became the new face of Vegemite, didn’t he

I think that everyone criticizing Emily seebohm and James mangason for being poor losers should look at josh booth to see what an actual bad looser looks like, the swimmers were cocky yes, but the way they acted after their events I would say was shock and disappointed they didn’t live up to expectations they/we had.

OK. I’m going to say it.
Stephanie Rice – less Twitter and less Kobe flirting and more laps.
You and Kobes can find a quiet jacuzzi somewhere AFTER your event. Get the job done first, Steph.
Has anyone told her about Kobe and jacuzzis? Least you know that the girl can handle herself in the water.

Give the girl a break. She did her best. I don’t think any of us regular Joe Schmoes could possibly understand the pressure these athletes are under, least of all from themselves.
I may also have a girl-crush on Stephanie, which may have led to me feeling strongly about this. LOL

Sisterhood! and so totally right. Hard yakka. It’s not something you can do every single day, so good on her for all the hard work she has put in thus far!

She has a pretty major shoulder injury! You know one that may result in a complete reconstruction! She has said that it kept out of the pool in her prep, but it’s not her fault!
And really do you expect our athletes to train 12 hrs a day? Between all of their sessions the would probably clock close to 6 most days which does leave some down time, to tweet, or have a relationship….

Stephanie Rice has such attitude. Here”s hoping she retires and fades into oblivion. phew…there – I’ve said it!

I believe your report about the athlete not being able to wear the hijab is incorrect and was addressed and revoked at the start of this week, they have all agreed that she can wear a modified version that satisfies her religious needs and ensures her safety.
Getting your info from Jezebel is pretty unprofessional, as is reporting an article dated over a week ago.
It would not have taken much to check your facts about this.
I am also surprised that you have not reported anything about the ONLY female athlete competing for Afganistan , she is on tonight and had to endure death threats and interrupted training at home due to the Taliban.
Her name is Tahmina Kohistani and she races in the 100m tonight in the athletics.

The Saudi girl has been granted permission to compete in a modified Hijab

I know Matty personally and I can tell you that he is exactly the same in person. He is the happiest, craziest, most fun person I know. He is also an all round great person.

I was a bit annoyed at the double standard of reporting about Ryan Lochte, so I had a rant about the article on my blog. http://www.catriona.com.au/media-rant-ryan-lochte-stud/

Cat you certainly are angry about him, but you fail to realize that for there to be a double standard the outcomes of both actions must be equal.
Men and Women having s|e|x has been viewed differently for a vast number of reasons such as the following:
Even to true believers in equal traits between men and women, no one can deny that in reproductive biology, males and females are extremely different, this will logically manifest in actions and consequences.
Men find it harder to find s|e|x only partners than women.
Research amongst 18-35 year old males conducted by Holtzberg & Borje at Stanford University department of psychology showed a clearer picture.
A test sample of 8 men and women of similar attractiveness were monitored in Nightclubs, bars, on campus and were asked and filmed to ask for s|e|x with 250 random individuals.
The results were: The men observed, aggregated 1 propositions over the two week period between the four of them and had 59 approvals out of exactly 1000 propositions.
The women aggregated 11 propositions over the two week period between them and had 284 approvals out of exactly 1000.
What can be deduced from this alone is; it is much easier for a women to have a single intimate encounter than men, but this is fairly common knowledge. What is easy to determine is that the playing field is not even, so what may be considered hard for men is considered much easier for women.
The basketball theory is that men’s basketball has a much higher physicality and level of skill, so if a women was to compete at that level she would be lauded and celebrated, were if a man was to perform well in the women’s league he would be viewed with little to no accomplishment.
Some people just refuse to believe that there are socialogical and biological differences between men and women that mean not every difference in reaction is purposefully sexist rather than just a cogent reactive process.
There are many more examples of why it is very clearly not a double standard the most glaring being the outcome of pregnancy, but proof doesn’t usually sway a mindset of cognitive victim bias

Thanks so much for taking the time to pull together that research – I find it really interesting. Also, thanks for reading the post
I wrote it to highlight the difference between the way the sex life of a male athlete is reported compared to the female athlete (I call it the Woman’s Day effect) and to possibly pose an alternative filter through which to look at the article.
There are absolutely sociological and biological differences between men and women, which I’m happy to leave to the experts, and people such as yourself, to look at. However I was interested that he came off looking like a hero and a stud, however if “he” was a “she”, I don’t think “she” would have had such friendly media treatment.

AHHH! That photo of Eamon Sullivan made me cringe!

How awesome does the food court look!
Also bravo to the company who gave out those headphones to all the swimmers (and probably other athletes). I’ve seen them (the headphones) several times on TV and in photos. Fantastic product placement.

How cool is the ‘all teams will have women athletes’ poster? I really hope they let the Saudi Arabian judo competitor take part.
