Do You Like This Story?

This is the news in a nutshell.

We’ll bring you the major news when it breaks in addition to our dedicated posts on individual news stories. Because a woman can never have to much information…..

It was the most talked about moment of this year's Golden Globes: Jodie Foster's acceptance speech where she spoke publicly about her sexual orientation. But not everyone in the gay community is congratulating Jodie, with her speech drawing criticism for not explicitly the words "gay" or "lesbian". Fred Sainz of the Human Rights Campaign, a national gay rights group has said "everyone watching clearly understood that she was communicating to people that she is gay. She is to be congratulated, no matter how awkward or inarticulate it may have seemed to some. It took an awful lot of courage."

Ugh, I feel SO awful for that boy’s friends and family. (And of course the poor girl beheaded, which is horrific – but the boy’s situation mirrors one I’ve experienced, so really hits home) Everyone hug their loved ones today/tonight.

Here is a real story on mis treatment of women in the extreme (killing of a 14 yo girl for refusing to marry), and the story will end up hidden with other news snippets and become irrelevent.

Surely this deserves a full article?

      Hi anon,

I totally take your point. Sadly there is so much tragedy in the world, including around the mistreatment of women and girls that we simply can’t cover it all in depth.

If you have a scan through previous MM articles you’ll see that we regularly cover the terrible things that do happen to women internationally, particularly in regards to marriage, divorce and sexual freedoms.

The news this morning said that the judge was able to release the Daniel’s remains as the ‘accused had given his consent’. Well F**K ME. Why should he have any bloody say over that boys remains, if he is guilty hasn’t he done enough already!

I understand that, and I realise it’s the way it was said but doesn’t’ make it any better. Poor parents had to endure the indignity of Daniel’s remains being in New Zealand and different parts of Australia at the same time because of the accused killers legal team. I know everyone’s got a job to do but it should never take that long to return someones remains to a family.

While I am sure the family want him back as soon as possible, I think it would be more important to them that all the evidence – proving it is their son’s remains, getting any evidence possible to prove who murdered their son – is accurately gathered. That takes time.

I cannot stand Julie, and everything she stands for. I think she has been atrocious this week in parliament to the point that I feel embarrassed for her.

BUT I don’t agree with what she was called.

However, at least the MP did apologise unreservedly and saw the error of his ways. There are many on the right who have never done this.

He did not apologise unreservedly at all, he picked out one word from a highly personal and nasty attack and changed it.

He’s a scum bag and doesn’t deserve to be in parliament.

And it’s worth remembering that Julia Gillard did no apologise for calling a Liberal MP a “mincing poodle”

You call that an apology? My 3 year old could do better. All he did was change a word, which is incredibly insulting and should never have been used to describe anyone, let alone an intelligent woman with a great education who is, after all, just doing her job. Which any labor politician would do too. If you think otherwise you are delusional.

I don’t want any elected representative, no matter which side they sit on, using that type of derogatory language (ie. douchbag, bimbo etc). Surely these people are more educated and intelligent than that? Having to resort to doing so makes a mockery of our parliament. Is it just me being a prude? I don’t think I am.

    • LM

no, you’re not a prude – rather you have every right to have that basic expectation. The language Julia Gillard used yesterday at her press conference to defend herself against the AWU accusations was below what one would expect from a PM. Dare I say that I believe that it is actually Gillard who has set this low tone. If Abbott dared to use the colourful language she does against others when in debate or in defence of herself, I imagine he would be slaughtered by all. Oh, and if it had been someone on the Liberal side of politics who had made this remark, then without a doubt, there would have been more than the one comment declaring their outrage at the misogyny of it all

The couple had an "open" relationship to allow the 29-year-old Aguilera to play out her female fantasies, according to rumours sweeping Hollywood, The Sun in the UK reported.
But music executive Jordan, 33, is said to have become too jealous.
Christina, who filed for divorce last week citing "irreconcilable differences", turned to lesbian friend Sam Ronson – Lindsay Lohan’s former lover – for emotional support after the split.
And some friends believe the superstar and DJ Sam could be lovers.
They were seen together at a hen do thrown by US socialite Nicole Richie in Mexico last month. And a source said: "Christina and Sam looked really close. It was after Christina had split with Jordan but before they announced it.
"They have been tight for some time and now people are speculating they could be an item."
Christina, who has a two-year-old son, Max, is said to be "incensed" by the claims. Her camp insisted she and Sam are just good friends.
And the singer suspects Jordan is playing dirrty tricks to gain early ground in a divorce battle.
Last week a woman claimed she was approached by Christina’s minder in Los Angeles bar The Abbey to see if she was interested in the blonde beauty.
"The bodyguard told me it was an understanding within their marriage and that she brings girls home and Jordan’s OK with it," a US website claimed..
"I met Christina in the bathroom and she told me she liked to play with girls.
"I ended up not pursuing anything with it because the situation just seemed so weird to me. But Christina was definitely looking to hook up."
Christina has previously confessed to fancying women – and hinted at enjoying girl-girl romps. In an interview earlier this year, she admitted: "If I want to be sexual, it’s for my own appreciation and enjoyment.
"That’s why I like to talk about the fact that sometimes I am attracted to women. I appreciate their femininity and beauty.
"My husband knows that I get into girls. I think it’s fun to be open and play.
"My husband and I check in with each other but I definitely love women. I think they’re more attractive to the naked eye."
But she insisted she would not want a full-time relationship with a woman due to her love of sex with men.
The claimsemerged asthe singerwas taken to hospitalsporting a cut lip. Shevisited the Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre with her husband, according to celebrity website RadarOnline.
A witness said: "Christina was bleeding from her mouth and had a bit of a busted lip.
"Jordan told the nurses she had fallen down."
According to the witness, Christina was sporting "bumps and red bruises" along with her bloodied lip.
"Shortly after they arrived to Cedars, Christina’s ‘private surgeon’ arrived to put a few stitches in her lip," the unnamed witness added.
Adding to the mystery of her injury, Christina was photographed on October 12 wearing a hat pulled down over her face with what appears to be a small cut below her lower lip.
That was the same day that she and Jordan announced the end of their five-year marriage.

I presume Mamamia and other pro-choice readers do NOT agree with politicians making decisions on how women BIRTH their baby?? After all it’s their body , their choice, why should male politicians get a say in where they birth, or how they birth….but they do and nothing seems to get said about it, in fact it is praised by some. Why is this??

Politicians get a say in all manner of things because it is their responsibility to do so.

Some motorcyclists don’t like wearing helmets, and some drivers don’t like wearing seatbelts, but there are laws to make them, because if something goes wrong, there is some protection. There is also the issue of public health money being spent on dickheads who endanger themselves through a fixed false belief.

No one says you have to stop forever, but if you have chosen to have a baby you have a responsibility to give them the best chance possible.

I stopped when I found out I was pregnant, as well as my anti depressants as the effects on the baby were unclear. It was SO hard, and a constant struggle, but worth it.

The big problem with tobacco, as compared to other legal bad things, is that other legal bad things, like alcohol and fatty fast food, are only breally bad for you if they are abused.

Tobacco is bad when it is used as intended, and since ‘baccy use results in escalating usage, it’s a very rare person who can stick to one fag a day.

At least having an occasional Maccas meal serves some purpose – eating, some nutrient value in there somewhere…as for ciggies – seems rather pointless. You inhale the smoke, then blow it straight back out again. It does nothing of value once it’s in the lung. Just destroys a few lung cells and dumps a few carcinogens. It’s like respiratory bulimia. And so expensive. And smells bad. Doesn’t make sense does it?

Hardcore smokers will often buy cigarettes over food. Logically you may say well why would you smoke if you were really that poor but people in those situations rarely see it that way. YES on the mobile phones while driving laws. Cradles are not very expensive, and frankly, other than answering calls, you don’t need to use your phone while driving. You just don’t. Wait until you stop!!!
    It’s too dangerous.

(I should admit to the fact that one of the three tickets I have gotten in my entire driving career was using a mobile phone while driving. The total irony of it was that my fine was $120, the exact cost of a bluetooth speakerphone system at the time….)

Yep, dont talk, dont text, dont eat and drink while you drive. Here’s a novel idea – while you’re driving just concentrate on driving. Note * we’re not that important that we have to take calls / make calls while driving. Are you an emergency surgeon on call? On the transplant list? No? Then check your messages when you stop driving. Thanks & happy Friday.

I guess you can take all the precautions in the world, but you cannot argue with mother nature. She will win every time. Be it earthquake, storms, you name it. She reacts to put things back into balance. When you think about it, she is only obeying the laws of physics. That is why its so important to understand her laws and work within them. And that is also why it is important for us to heal our fractured relationships with each other. Because you never know what will happen these days – global economic crisis or mother nature – the governments will not play the part of superhero, and ultimately we will rely on each other to help each other. Mother nature – pushing us to connect and learn to get along.
And if we don’t, well, we’ll kill each other off and she will balance herself out in peace. Either way, she wins.

Senator Feeney is a Senator from Victoria. I believe you are referring to South Australian Senator, Senator Farrel. A vote was held at the ALP SA’s state convention over the weekend. Senator Farrel ‘won’ first place on the ticket and he rightfully stepped aside so Senator Wong may have first place on the ticket.

I don’t know if the word “rightly” is appropriate – “graciously” is, but not rightly. Farrell won spot one on the ticket fair and square from the members of the Labor party that vote. The fact that Farrell “won” and Wong “lost” is not a matter or right or wrong, but an indication of what the SA Labor party members believe.

Penny Wong is of the Labor left faction and was pro-Rudd. Gillard and the ‘faceless men’ are of the Labor right faction. The right is looking to consolidate power by having another member of their faction elected to the Senate.

Gillard is actually from the left not the right and Senator Farrell is already in the Senate so they’re not trying to consolidate power as much as just demonstrate which faction has the most numbers. That being said, Penny Wong should definitely be at the top of the ticket! :)

I reckon that Gillard now owes a lot of favours/loyalty to the right as her acension to PM was supported by them when Rudd went. IMO, no longer can be cleanly associated wih Left. What are your thoughts?

Appreciate clarification re. Farrell. Dumb move after all the instability in Labor.

I find it strange that someone (anyone, not just Bayley) who is accused of horrendous crimes and clearly wants to end their life is revived or given medical attention. This just so they can go through the judicial process which will, if found guilty, then hand out their own punishment and tens of thousand of dollars to the taxpayer.

Just to be clear, I’m not saying that they shouldn’t, I just find it odd.

Interesting comment. I did a little double take, there. Not to speak specifically about this case, but purely hypothetically: what if someone was accused of a horrendous, heinous crime which they in fact did not commit? and what if it all appeared so hopeless that they tried to end their life? Would you find it odd to try to resuscitate then? Or if not you, who would make the call? Not attacking you, Alex, but definitely seeing something odd in your own reasoning….

I agree. There are definitely situations where people are accused of crimes and it is later proved they did not commit them, even after being convicted. My point is when someone wants to end their life, we as a society make every attempt to keep them alive, so a punishment can be inflicted on them (if they did actually commit the crime).

I find it odd that Mia said on Twitter that it was ‘meh’, that Bayley was taken to hospital, and would like to know why she said it. I’m writing about Bayley at the moment, and yes whilst he (allegedly, remember it hasn’t been proven beynd reasonable doubt yet) did a horrible thing, he is still entitled to basic rights such as access to medical treatment and a fair trial.

Perhaps you would like to check out the wikipedia page “List of crime in Australia”
The very last paragraph details Jill’s murder and says in very clear terms – raped and murdered by Adrian Bayley. No mention of it still being an allegation as he has not yet been to trial.

Sex ed: great thing! children need to learn about their body and its functions, of course, different stages call for different levels of age-appropriate content.

Allan Jones: So glad that this outrage of a media commentator has finally been ordered to go back to journalism school. It’s one thing to have twisted opinions but another to mislead crowds of influencible people with false information and offensive comments.

Wikileaks: I find it very courageous of Assange to stick to his guns despite his predicament. The world needs transparency and people that are ready to do anything to achieve it. Of course, my status as a regular folk makes it hard to assess whether all of wikileaks’s info is reliable but I don’t think so many people would be trying to quash him if the info wasn’t threatening to them.

Selling virginity: what a stupid way to get a one-off payment. Loosing my virginity was a beautiful experience and it stays in my memory, and reflects in my personality as a proud confident woman. I doubt these people will have a good memory of this event and I also doubt it will impact positively on their self-esteem! Each to their own though, I don’t really care it is their life :-)

Can’t we just forget him please, until the trial outcome and sentencing? I’m not sure who cares to hear about his wellbeing right now.

Jess: You are right. And you are also wrong:

Was the horrific crime of 22 September major news? Yes, sure was. And so will be the trial in Jnuary and his sentencing.

Is the Frankenstorm in the US major news? Yes, sure is.
Natural disasters DO make front page news overseas, for example, our 2009 bushfires and were front page news overseas.
Besides, it’s not our everyday garden-variety storm. It is a hurricane (Sandy) and will affect one of the world’s largest cities in which many Australian expats live.

Are updates on what is going on with Jill’s alleged killer in jail major news? No. It’s minor by comparison. Anyway, this attempt by him will the first of several, I suspect.
