1. Childless homes to become the norm
Homes with traditional families will make up less than a quarter of the national population by 2026 when childless couples and singles become the norm. Single person homes will become the biggest demographic in the country, at 31 per cent.
2. Have clubs been exaggerating the cost of poker machine reform?
A strategy paper from Clubs Training Australia, meant to remain secret, was posted on the website of Clubs Queensland and reveals that the profits estimated to be lost due to the proposed introduction of mandatory pre-commitment technology at gaming venues with poker machines were exaggerated by about 20 per cent. The paper also revealed Clubs were drafting plans to install ATMs outside of venues, such as in carparks and on trailers, to get around the requirement for machines inside to dispense no more than $250 a day per person. Clubs Australia has now offered support for a trial in one state.
3. Depression charity, alleged bullying and homophobia
BeyondBlue, the charity that helps those with mental illnesses, has suffered its own version of the blues recently after its chariman Jeff Kennett was accused of being homophobic. And it has now been revealed that Mr Kennett was the subject of a bullying complaint by Beyondblue’s former chief executive Dawn O’Neill who resigned after just nine months in the job. Ms O’Neill was the former head of Lifeline and allegedly said Mr Kennett’s behaviour included ‘ranting, name-calling and using abusive language’. The board investigated the claims and found them to be unsubstantiated. According to the SMH: “The relationship appears to have broken down completely after Mr Kennett wrote in his column in the Herald Sun on September 9 that the best environment for the mental health of a child was a ”stable, loving environment in which a male and female are married to each other”. The column sparked a furore in the gay and lesbian community and embarrassed major sponsor Movember, which gave more than $10 million to beyondblue last year. Ms O’Neil was forced to distance the organisation from her chairman’s comments, issuing a statement on the beyondblue website that said there was no evidence parents’ gender had an effect on children’s mental health. She tendered her resignation on September 16 and left two weeks later.”
4. Nobel Peace Prize awarded to three women
The Nobel Peace Prize for 2011 was awarded to three women Friday evening. The prize went to Africa’s first democratically elected female president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee who worked in the same country to secure women’s rights and Tawakkul Karman for her work in similar pursuits in Yemen.
5. Young women drinking? Tell your mates if you plan on having sex.
That’s the message from the NSW Police Commissioner who referred to studies that showed the number of women aged 18-25 who drank heavily and regularly. One quarter of girls in that age bracket drank twice a week and another quarter drank heavily in one session four times a month. The Commissioner said women should let each other know if they plan to have sex before going out to hopefully prevent drunken ‘mistakes’. The question is: will it work, and is it the right way to go about fixing the problem?
6. Sex therapists in Victoria using prostitutes to help
Some therapists in Victoria are using prostitutes to help (mostly) male patients with problems such as erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation and body image. Others have complained saying the sessions are just ‘glorified prostitution’ because the fees involved are in the hundreds of dollars. Sex surrogacy has a reported 95 per cent success rate in Australia, according to a study presented to the World Congress on Sexual Health in 2007.

Which African country has she become the first female president of please?

Liberia
Cheat sheet going up soon!

Donuts and pancakes for me!

Miranda looks gorgeous, good for her!

I hate to complain, cause I really love when you do the news Rick, but the first 2 women you mention are from Liberia, not from “Africa”. I know this is just an oversight on your behalf, but my pet hate is how people often refer to Africa like it’s a country.
As someone else said I would love to see a bit more about Sirleaf and the other woman who won the peace price. She is a really interesting woman. Personally I think her “sex strikes” were a work of genius!
Thanks!
loading...
That is actually an oversight as I amended what I wrote on our FB page on Friday night which *did* say they were from Liberia. That’s why it reads a little odd now. I’m actually doing a quick cheat sheet on them now, so all this will be by-the-by!
loading...
Thanks Rick! Yep I know you just skipped the word Liberia from there but overall I feel we have such a poor knowledge of all things African here in Oz and its just my pet peeve. Everyone has one they like to rant about, right? Right!?
loading...
Even worse, I think my newspaper yesterday said ’3 African women’ – in a headline, right above a paragraph which said 2 Liberians & a Yemeni.
loading...
Morning everyone!
Re: no 5- erm, it may be just me, but I become very impulsive when I’ve had a few, so telling your mates who are also drinking may not be very effective. Having a DD would be much more effective. I understand where the Commissioner is coming from, but I don’t think that’s the way to go.
Re: no 7 – um, no words…

In other news, Mike Rann’s new found support for gay marriage – just as he steps down as SA Premier – isn’t brave, it’s cowardice.
He’s been the lawmaker for years but done nothing. We need braver politicians than him.
Good to have you on board, Mr Rann, pity about the timing.
loading...
Totally agree. Was going to put it in news but didn’t think he deserved the congratulations…
loading...
I thought the same thing when I read about what he had said and where he had said it. Gutless. A word that just about describes our “invisible” premier’s entire administration. Unfortunately, can’t see that things will improve under Mr Weatherall. He has been the Minister for Education, thus far, and things are not going well in South Australian schools.

If Miranda Kerr is paid to model clothes, why is she always NAKED?
loading...
she always does it tastefully tho. It’s a beautiful shot. and no I am not a man.
loading...
She’s not a ‘clothes’ model. She is a model.
loading...
What does a model model, if not clothes?
loading...
make up.. perfume.. bags.. general brands..
Their body IS their work, they get money to let other people photograph their body to sell stuff.
loading...
People can model for all sorts of things… they can pose nude for painters, photographers, sculptors…
Granted, Miranda is probably first and foremost a fashion model, but she’s not the first to get her gear off for the camera. And anyway, she’s wearing shoes and a head scarf
(I’m being cheeky in case that didn’t come across)

Any chance we could get a more in depth story on the three Nobel Peace Prize winners?
loading...
Beyond Blue is an amazing organization, I hope this doesn’t discourage anyone out there from using them.
And I hope they investigate it further and appoint someone else if appropriate.. you can’t have someone who has consistent bullying/homophobic behaviour chairing Beyond Blue. What a tool.
loading...
Put your pants on Miranda! Just no need….
loading...
Why? Is there something wrong with nude pictures of beautiful women that are tastefully done? I think she looks amazing and I’d rather look at her nude shots than some trashy Playboy model.
(I’m not a man)
loading...
tastefully, another one of those words that gets over used like, curvy.
loading...
Miranda Kerr looks amazing! Wish I remotely resembled her.
Can everyone please stop jumping on anyone who does not include every single lifestyle choice when they are discussing anything at all? It makes it very hard to get to the point of a discussion when you have to take time out to describe every single scenario in case someone gets offended. It is hard to speak generally when the PC brigade is breathing down your neck. I understood what Jeff Kennett was saying anyway.

You would look good in that pose. Every woman does. It’s a very flattering one.

Clubs Australia? Lying? Setting up ATMs to help problem gamblers keep gambling?
I thought they were all concerned-like about problem gamblers and just thought other tatics were needed to combat it. I can see how those ATMs help!
In conjunction with banning the Salvos from collecting in NSW Clubs because of their early stance in support of the pokie reform, I wonder how these guys can sleep at night.
loading...
Of course they can sleep at night…very comfortably…on a great big pile of soft cushy money!
“Oh the smell of human misery…I loves it…LOVES IT!!!”
loading...
They probably wake up to Miranda Devine type views…
Except for Kennett, who’s obviously secretly gay. The really big haters always are.
loading...
I have been working with young people involved in the criminal justice system for close to a decade. Often they come difficult family backgrounds. I can say with confidence that the best environment for the mental health of a child is one where the parents are not drug-addicted, violent and abusive. Gender is irrelevant.

Aaaaaaand don’t forget!!!! The Wallabies won an epic quarter-final against the Springboks in the RWC yesterday….Semis here we come!

Personally I am a bit sick of the ubermodels who strut the catwalk 5 minutes after giving birth. I think Amanda Kerr is a gorgeous girl but it just how does it make the rest of the mums who take (slightly) more than 5 minutes to lose baby weight and regain a body they feel comfortable in feel? It’s tremendous pressure to constantly bombard us with these women who don’t have a body shape consistent with the norm, let alone bombard us with images of them starkers 5 minutes after giving birth with absolutely no visible reminders of the maternal state thier bodies have been in for the past 9 months. I’m a size 12 and have worked at regaining my prebaby body for the last 2 years. I look at Amanda Kerr, Rebecca Twiggley, Heidi Frckin’ Klum and think how lucky they are. But how many women look at them and think ” How UNlucky am I ?”

I look at Miranda Kerr and think ‘Awesome inspiration!’ I’m a new mum, my bub is 4 months next week, and she has been a great inspiration to me – not in the ‘Get in the treadmill and work your ass off’ kind of way but more of a ‘relax, enjoy being a mum, enjoy your bub, don’t put pressure on yourself, and just eat healthy’ kind of way. I’ve seen and read so many interviews with her after she had bubs, and this is the message she sends out. And it’s worked for me. I’m back to being a size 10, my husband says I’m in better shape than what I was pre-pregnancy, and a lot of it was to do with taking on board her positive message. Cheers to you Miranda!
loading...
I look at Miranda Kerr and think…well, never mind…you can probably guess…
loading...
I agree Lizzie, love Miranda and what she stands for.
loading...
Agree with you Lizzie, but it’s important to keep some perspective as Miranda would have had a lot more support than most Mum’s to get back in shape.
Not everyone is as lucky to have nannies/babysitters, etc to look after bub whilst they get back in shape.
loading...
I think it’s probably best to keep in mind that these women are paid to make sure they look this good. They must be under enormous pressure to bounce back quickly, every photo will be focusing on their body looking for a little bit of cellulite or flab – not for me thanks!
loading...
I love Miranda Kerr and love her relaxed approach. I also know that I will never look like her cause a) genetics b) like someone else said she is paid to look good which means she can afford the chef to prepare the best meals, have the gym at home so she can work out in the spare 5 mins that bub is asleep, have people to do her general errands. I look at her for inspiration but know that I will never look like her and that is ok cause I am me
loading...
“I look at her for inspiration but know that I will never look like her and that is ok cause I am me”
Brilliant!!!! I agree. Now, we just need everyone else in the world to realise this and all this body image crap will be over!
Seriously ladies – it’s as easy as that. You are ALL ok as you are.
loading...
I understand all the points you make, but I think the important things to remember are:
These women are not looking like this the day after giving birth, its usually a few months after.
They are genetically blessed anyway, so pregnancy probably might not have had as big a impact on their bodies as it would on other women.
They make their living out of looking this way. So, they would have most likely concentrated a hell of a lot during pregnancy not to gain weight, just as they would concentrate on that when not pregnant.
These kinds of photos are usually not about the model herself promoting ‘hey look at me and my tiny bum and flat tummy, just a few months after having a baby’… it’s the media who keep focusing on that (bad media!) They are just photos of models, making a living.
These photos are all photo-shopped.
As Eleanor Roosevelt said ‘No-one can make you feel inferior without your consent’.
loading...
That’s a really good point Cordeline, I agree with everything you said.
Miranda is one of the lucky ones with awesome genes that just snap back. I’m sure there’s been a lot of work involved to, but really why does this affect women so? Everyone is different, no one way is better than another. She’s a beautiful woman with a beautiful approach to life, and I respect that enormously.
loading...
I understand what you’re saying but unfortunately depending on the circumstances sometimes you can try with all your might not to give consent and a person can totally deflate you. Kudos to Miranda etc but this isn’t the norm 6 weeks post baby for most mums. For most women it’s not a healthy option to lose weight so fast. Not for her and not for her baby. In particular Miranda Kerr is truly a beautiful woman inside and out and I personally don’t blame her for such an erroneous and unhealthy message.
loading...
Who said that picture of Miranda was taken 6 weeks after giving birth? Rick said it was taken a few months after.
And anyway, maybe all that changed on her body during pregnancy was the size of her belly, and maybe that’s why she is lying on her tummy in this shot…?
In any case, like I said above, its just a shame that photos of models who have recently had babies always come with a caption to remind people that the person has just had a baby. If such captions weren’t there, I don’t think it would bother some people.
And sure, I do agree that regardless of how high we hold our heads, sometimes other people will make us feel deflated. Hell, that can happen when I see a friend with ultra-clear skin or a fab new haircut.
How is Miranda sending and erroneous and unhealthy message?
loading...
We are all different!
Don’t ever feel bad that you don’t look like Miranda Kerr.
I still have my baby tummy after 14 months. But if I had a personal trainer and someone to look after my girls maybe I’d be lying on a bed, nude with a newspaper too (probably not, though!)
How great is it to look at our gorgeous babies?
Look at your beautiful 2 year old and not so much at the tummy etc!
We’ll get there in the end, dammit!
loading...
Miranda can’t win with anything she does. It’s her job.
I bet there has been a woman who has looked at you and thought ‘wow she is a size 12 after having a baby, why can’t I be like that. It’s not fair’. But no one is whinging about that.
loading...
I wasn’t whinging. Just making a valid point mainly that my biggest frustration is that there is an emphasis on weight at all after a woman has had a baby. Never said it was Miranda’s fault. Please read the new article on Mamamia
loading...
In several interviews I’ve heard her saying something along the lines of “I’m not normal, I’m a model, if your partner is comparing you to me then they’re a dill” and “eat well and nourish your body and it will come naturally”. I love her, she is finally a good role model!
loading...
I am lucky I guess, my baby is 12 weeks today and I’ve just lost the last kilo to get back to my pre baby weight. I pretty much lost all but 2kg within 2 weeks of giving birth. Some people really do just get lucky! And I hate that I feel like I should somehow feel guilty about it…
loading...
I agree with Auscrawl. I am a single parent and have been since the day I gave birth. When I read that bit about Kennetts comments I didn’t bat an eyelid. Why are the gay and lesbian groups jumping up and down?? Do they think what he says is the be all and end all? Anyone with common sense knows that children who are loved, cared about and given boundaries are happy ones. Simple.
loading...
I think they gay and lesbian groups are referring to the bit where Kennett suggested it had to be a man and a woman for a child to turn out OK. It’s not just that it is insulting, it’s that it is incorrect, as Ms O’Neil pointed out on Beyond Blue’s website.
Plus Kennett runs the organisation – who’s purpose is to help men with depression. Who are the most likely men to be depressed? Gay teens.
loading...
Kennet’s statement about traditional family model which was loving environment being ideal for child’s mental health – I don’t see anything wrong with that. In that example you have two postive role models, one of each sex. This scenario often isn’t possible, so society has to make the best of their respective situations. I don’t think to say that is gay bashing, of course two loving gay parents is better than a lot of fighting heterosexual couples, and single parents like myself often didn’t want to be single parents ever – but do the best we can.
If you only have one gender parenting whether single or gay of course if you’re doing the best for the child of course the child has a good basis for mental health – but if you can have a role positive model of each gender within the household to understand each gender perspective when the kid is going through puberty and such, of course that’s ideal. It might not be the family’s reality, but to voice an opinion about it being ideal is fair enough.
I get sick of everything having to be watered down as not to offend this group and that group these days. I personally relate to single parent families and the disabled from first hand experience but I don’t take offence to statements such as these.
If someone says that a child who has normal IQ who can learn well is going to be happier in school and more sucessful in life – I don’t take that as offensive to my son with intellectual disability who has little literacy. I know even though he is a happy kid of course if he could learn easier it would afford him more options, but we make do.
loading...
I see your point, though I think the biggest issue here was not just his remarks but the fact he is chairman of beyondblue. A mental illness charity does not have the luxury of possibly making some they are meant to help feel second class.
loading...
I still find the guy obnoxious generally, and thank god he is not in office, and likely he is a bully- just not proven.
I could take that as a single parent to be offended and feel second class even though my two boys might never have a live in father role again, but I don’t. I think it’s more about the gay community being overly defensive here. I am not anti gay marriage, or anti gay generally.
For me the mardi gras doesn’t help me people think of commited loyal gay couples, but I know there are flamboyant and conservative gay people. I don’t find half dressed young straight girls flaunting it helpful in my view of their parenting skills if they were pushing a stroller like that either.
loading...
Again though, it’s not the words. I’m not offended by the words. But it’d be like the chairman of a vegetarian council saying beef is awesome and vegetarians are not ideal.
loading...
I heart Rick Morton
loading...
I’m offended by the fact that Jeff Kennett thinks children are happier if their parents are married. My partner and I have agreed that we won’t get married – mainly because of his unhappy childhood when his parents WERE married – but we will be having children. So apparently our kids will be worse off and suffer from mental illness because we didn’t spend $20,000 on a rock that probably cost someone in Sierra Leone their arm and $40,000 on dresses, cake that no one eats and a dodgy dj? Right. You are a genius Jeff.
loading...
Except that beef IS awesome and vegetarians are not ideal.
loading...
I read a great blog post about why this blogger isn’t supporting Movember and it’s due to Jeff Kennet and his seemingly anti-gay stance and the fact he is the Chairman of Beyond Blue. I will retweet it to Mamamia.
loading...
Whilst generally most of the arguement makes sense I think the biggest issue is the history of Jeff Kennett and his view of homosexuals.
In a time gone by he has been heard making comments that relate homosexuals to paedophiles and hence whilst these comments may not seem so bad as a one-off they are when you combine then with him being the head of an organisation that combat depression and his previous homophobic views.
Lets not forget that gay youths are more likely to suffer depression and commit suicide then the general population.
loading...
If you’re a child who happens to find two parents of *any* sex who provide a loving environment to grow up in, you’re very blessed.
loading...
Oh, and Re Miranda Kerr….
THANK YOU!
What a great way to start the day…more please.
loading...
lol, actually I think Miranda is a great ambassadour (sp?) for Australia, such a beautiful girl, and the picture is tasteful- the heavy bronze job is a bit overdone by the stylist though.
I would rather people think of her as an example of an aussie model than Jennifer Hawkins, or Lara Bingle (gag). I find these two positively snakey.
loading...
Looks like the term Breeders won’t be able to be used as a blanket term for straight people anymore…
