Ajay Rochester

Former Biggest Loser host blasts Channel 9

Ajay Rochester is not happy with Channel 9 for refusing to ‘stand behind its product’ and support the axed Excess Baggage weight loss show in which she was a contestant. The show was technically moved to its digital channel Go! but that’s industry-speak for ‘doomed’. She blogged:

“Okay, I am currently stuck on the bum’s f@ck end of Australia, Kangaroo Island, beautiful place but NO reception so we just found out that the ratings/channel say that we should move channels. Well, anyone who knows me, and who knows that I turned down $50,000 from Woman Day to say “I lied” about a certain photoshopped bikini shot that I was not responsible for (I can’t photoshop to save my life and last I checked I am not the one pressing the “go to print” button. People who know me well know that I will never ever ever take a buck versus NOT say what is on my mind.

Come on channel nine, have some faith. Excess Baggage is a grower not a shower! Don’t flick US (our show) off onto another channel in the first week without standing behind the product you sell.  SHAME ON YOU! This is a GREAT show and has the ability to change people’s lives for the better FOREVER!

I know that I risk not ever being employed by channel nine again (but even they know this is a good show!), but I also did that with channel 10. I refused to endorse their online weight loss club and their shakes and protein bars…call me a Diva!!!!!!”

She said the show wasn’t about extreme weight loss like its rival, Biggest Loser, and that the contestants were already happier and healthier.

Government has the support to means test private health

A count of the votes sees the Government with the support it needs to bring in a means test for the private health rebate, a 30 per cent rebate introduced by John Howard. Health Minister Tanya Plibersek says the measure will save $2.4 billion from the budget bottom-line over the next three years. The rebate will be phased out for singles earning more than $83,000 and stop completely for a single earning $129,000 per year. It will be reduced for couples earning more than $166,000 and end for couples earning more than $258,000. The final vote is expected in the House of Representatives next week.

Mick Molloy says sex slur was only a joke in appeal

Comedian Mick Molloy is appealing a court’s ruling that found he defamed the wife of former Adelaide Crows coach Graham Cornes. Nicole Cornes won $93,000 in damages last year when the South Australian Supreme Court found she was defamed by insinuations she had slept with a former AFL player. Molloy made the comment on Network Ten’s Before The Game football show in 2008. But his lawyers say a joke is a joke and ‘ordinary’ Australians don’t get to ‘intellectualise’ about the meaning implied.

Confusing last names bad for work prospects

That’s the conclusion of researchers out of Melbourne who say people with hard-to-pronounce surnames are often overlooked in the world of business and employment. Lead author Dr Simon Laham, from Melbourne University’s School of Psychological Sciences, said easy-to-pronounce names were generally judged more positively. “The effect is not due merely to the length of a name, or how foreign-sounding or unusual it is, but rather how easy it is to pronounce,” said Dr Laham, who worked with scientists from New York and Belgium. The study was published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology and compared dozens of apparently very easy and very difficult names to rate the effect they had on job or even classroom prospects. But how bad can it be? We’ve got a Hirschowitz in charge over here. Of course, odd-sounding names surely can’t help much either. Just ask this TV host…

Detention centre contracts quadruple to $1 billion

Screen shot 2012 02 09 at 7.02.39 AM 380x215 Watercooler: Ajay is angry, says shame on you to Ch. 9

.

The cost of running Australia’s detention centres has blown out to $1 billion over four years. The costs of the contract with the private company which manages them – Serco – used to be $280 million. The number of detention centres has increased from 12 to 20 under Labor. While the centres accommodate visa over-stayers and illegal workers, the Government admits they make up a small number compared with asylum seekers. Greens senator Sarah Hansen-Young said asylum seekers should be immediately released from detention into the community. According to the Government’s own figures, the cost of housing asylum seekers in detention is about 32 times greater than housing them in the community while they are processed.

Australia needs to protect migrant women

The Australian Law Reform Commission says Australia needs to develop new immigration laws in order to protect women fleeing family violence in their own countries. Michelle Griffin writes for Fairfax and summarises the report’s recommendations: “The creation of a new temporary visa to allow secondary visa holders, such as the partners of international students, to stay in Australia to seek help or apply for residency. Extending family violence provisions to migrants on prospective spouse visas. Simplifying the evidence of family violence required by immigration tribunals.” Reform of the Migration Act is ”long overdue,” said Fiona McCormack, chief executive of Domestic Violence Victoria. ”This is a human rights issue for Australia; we have a positive obligation to provide protection to women in Australia to live free from violence. Complexity and inconsistency within the immigration system contributes to the extremely difficult situation faced by migrants and refugees experiencing family violence.”

We pay $270 a month for private health care for our family and this is not top cover. Without the 30% rebate we will be up for over $400 a month that is almost $5000 a year!
Why would you pay this? It just means less people will pay for it which means more pressure on Medicare/ public health care system & resources.
The only real benefit with private health is if you need a planned operation, if you get injured you end up at the public hospital anyway. You can’t even use it for giving birth on my plan.
(yes you might have your own room)

“the womens magazines at the counter. It is hectic how much those magazines feed into girls insecurities. Covers with “BODY PANIC”, “WEIGH ISSUES” in massive fonts etc.. I hope you girls know that that shit isn’t real life, you are fucking beautiful, amazing creatures, and please, slap yourself if you ever get self-conscious because of some shit you read in a magazine sold next to chewing gum.

Also, Kim Kardashian is a massive, epic flog, yet is on almost every cover. I dont get it.. I guess it’s just another thing I will never understand about women. x

I never thought I’d say this, but I sat through an entire episode of Excess Baggage today and I have to say that I would pick it over Biggest Loser if I had to watch one. It was surprisingly positive and they don’t focus on weight, but health.

I think it’s a shame that Channel 9 didn’t have faith in what is honestly a superior product to the Biggest Loser. The only problem with Excess Baggage is that it is lower budget, so lacks the visual entertainment value that comes from having the obligatory reality show ‘house’ etc. While that doesn’t bother me, I think that those things give the illusion of a quality show.

Why should I loose the private health rebate. Just because I earn more than $80000 a year. I work my butt off, I work 12 hour shifts and have studied bloody hard to get to where I’m at. The government needs to stop punishing people who work hard and go after the people abusing social security.

Why do the well-off always invent welfare cheats when they want their tax money back? There are more wealthy tax cheats than there are welfare scammers or bludgers and they take more from government. The govt provides Medicare for all, at a cheaper rate for those less able to pay.i.e. pro rata . The less well off often work harder than the rich and with less gain.

We paid our health insurance religiously until my husband got sick and we were forced onto disability benefits. Despite being told that he would never work again, he fought his way back to full time work. Having dealt with Centrelink to get social security, I can tell you, it is bloody hard to abuse the system.
We would love to be able to pay medical benefits again and not be a burden on the public health system, but we cannot as we are both over 50 now and the cost and the pre-existing conditions are prohibitive.
Please think before you make these sweeping generalizations about people who are getting social security payments.

Health insurance should be means tested but not via income.

If you smoke 3 packets of cigarettes a day and eat nothing but junk, you shouldn’t pay the same premium as someone who looks after themeslves regardless of salaries.

Where is the incentive for people to be healthy???

I guess it would have to be via a certificate from one’s doctor or something like that.

We have health guidelines. A doctor would sign off that you were meeting them or something like that…

Just seems there should be some reward for looking after yourself; where currently there is no financial incentive.

I can see this playing out one of two ways:

          1) People lie to their doctor and say they’re meeting the guidelines when they’re not. If I tell my doctor I go to the gym three times a week, how is he going to know I don’t?

          or

          2) The doctor signs off on the guidelines whether you meet them or not.

On top of that, GPs are busy enough. We’re supposed to have perfectly healthy people lining up for appointments as well, just so a doctor can sign something so they get a discount on their insurance? Doctors have better things to do.

          I just think it’s unworkable.

I don’t watch Excess Baggage, but I have noticed from the ads it’s been pushed back a few times due to the cricket. When are television producers going to realise people hate being dicked around? Can you really just air a show (sporadically) for a week or two and then declare it a failure? Moving it to another time slot (or completely different channel!) is just sealing it’s fate. Speaking for myself, if I watch a show and it’s not on when I expect it to be, I give up on it pretty quickly. Who’s got the time to scour television guides to keep up with it all? Channel Nine should just persevere (as Channel Ten did with Renovators) and it would probably pick up more viewers over time.

Yes, I have. And it’s super flexible, too. I rarely make it the same way twice. My kids love to make this one as there’s very little cooking – just lots of mixing.

250g biscuits (whatever kind you like)
      1/2 cup desiccated coconut
1 cup nuts (whatever kind you like)
100g dark chocolate (the good, cooking kind)
      80g unsalted butter
      1 tablespoon golden syrup
      1 egg

In a food processor, reduce the biscuits to rubble and tip into a bowl. Do the same for the nuts (if not already chopped). Mix with the coconut.

Melt butter, chocolate and golden syrup in a small saucepan then pour over dry mixture. Add beaten egg and mix well.

Pour into rectangular mould and chill until hardened.

For icing, melt 100g of cooking chocolate with 2 tablespoons sour cream. Pour over slice and chill until set.

Cut into squares, dust with icing sugar and serve.

The best bit is that you can play with this recipe depending on what you have in the pantry. Use a smaller amount of biscuits and put in 1 cup of rice bubbles. I often replace the nuts with something like chopped dates (makes them ok for school lunchboxes if it’s nut-free). You could use ginger nut biscuits for a great flavour sensation. You could do a white chocolate topping for something special.

      Enjoy!

Hi MM team, nothing to do with the news, but about 6 months ago or so, (might have been longer) there was an article on hear about power people and how in a relationship someone can make you feel crazy or irrational. For example if you suspect them cheating and question them on it they will have you believing that you are insane and have you totally questioning yourself. Does that story ring a bell with anyone? if so can you reply to me with a link to it? I have a girlfriend going through some dramas with her husband at the moment and I know this would really help her. Cheers x

I actually agree with the not-under-7 guideline, and possibly higher. I’ve only really started letting my daughter go selected places alone since she turned 10. Before that age, children’s judgement for crossing roads etc., and attention to such things, is really not great. A key thing, though, is not just age but whether they are alone or not. Four 9 year olds walking to school together not too far? Absolutely OK, I reckon. They look out for each other. But younger than that and alone, there are lots of potential problems, depending on the child.

What I don’t agree with is the vague guidelines police seem to have. Do they have any? Or can they just report something if they feel like it, and not if they don’t? As for police telling someone that they wouldn’t be letting a child do that if the child was theirs – that’s just paternalistic, overbearing crap. Hope it wasn’t said in front of the child. Police either have rules and laws to enforce, with general guidelines for their application, or they don’t. They aren’t our moral guardians.

Here’s one for the commenters – I have a friend who works on the weekends in the city, so allows her children, 9 and 11 to wander around in the city for 4+ hours each Saturday. They get lunch but otherwise have no particular plan, just roam. Is this OK?

Surely it depends on the kid? I was allowed to cross the busy main road outside our house (at the pedestrian lights) when I was 7, and go to the second-hand bookshop to spend my pocket money. And when I was 8 I was allowed to catch a tram with a friend to the slightly less local shops. My brother was a really vague, accident-prone kid though and my parents didn’t trust him out by himself crossing roads etc til he was a bit older.

ETA – I walked home from school by myself at 5, too, crossing only a quiet back street.

I don’t quite get why people are so worried about what the police say on this. Is a kid going to behave any more responsibly 2 days after they turn 12? Is an abductor going to ask to see a birth certificate? If anything dire did happen on the walk to my unsupervised child school, at home or *gulp* at the library I think the police charging ME would be the least of my worries.

That’s a bit unfair about the age guideline – it’s more about likelihoods of harm and the capacity to deal with situations that will arise. I din’t agree with the police action, but I’d be looking closer if the kid looked 5 not 10 and that’s just sensible. Some 14 yr olds are smart enough to vote but we don’t let any because most aren’t. They don ‘t miraculously change at 18.

The other side of this, is that my eldest is nearly 15. Some of her close friends are not yet allowed to catch a bus on their own. When do you start letting them having some independence? How are they supposed to gain confidence in their own abilities to problem solve? I think it’s just the article that has blown a couple of incidents out of proportion. Police officers must see a lot more kids out wondering the streets than just these examples – and I bet a lot of the other kid’s parents didn’t weigh up the pros and cons first, and make a thoughful decision about what to allow and when. Many other kids’ parents mightn’t know or care where they are.
I’d rather the police question my child than to not think anything of young people out alone.

I don’t generally like reality tv, but I’ll usually give something a go. I don’t like the biggest loser. The contestants are pushed very hard, low fat diet is encouraged and now big brother style cameras. Let’s not forget the trainers shouting at the contestants. Excess baggage seems far more relaxed, with a bigger emphasis on treating the causes of obesity. I have to admit I prefer it. You may think AJ is ranting. I think she brings up a fair point. The main commercial free to air channels are too quick to play around with time slots for new shows. I’m still mourning the sopranos. They moved that around so much you couldn’t keep up with it.

Agree with you 100% about the networks moving things around too much. I also missed the last season of the Sopranos because they took it off, then put it back on at midnight (who checks the TV guide for what’s on at midnight every night?!).
Often they’ll not advertise great shows at all, and they progressively move later into the night until disappearing. Channel 7 is actually the worst for this lately.

The networks are far too quick to label something a ‘flop’ and to move it around. Surely we could do more with a billion dollars than keep a lot of traumatised people in what is effectively jail. I completely understand that basic health and background checks need to be done (although I’m pretty sure given how well funded terrorists seem to be they are most likely to arrive by plane with a visa) but once that is over, surely there is a way that we can release these people into the community while the rest of their claim is processed?

I would love us to find a way to stop people coming by boats, it is just so dangerous, but locking people up when they get here isn’t the answer. If my choice was between being locked up in Australia or being persecuted and potentially killed in my homeland, I would be getting on the boat. Prosecuting the poor fishermen who take them won’t help either – there are plenty more where they came from for the king pins to recruit.

Until we start finding a way to prosecute those who are at the top of the people smuggling rings, and provide a safe place for people fleeing violence to stay while they are being processed somewhere in Asia, people are going to keep getting on boats. So when they get here, can’t we at least treat them in a humane way?

And, yes,i watch the news through my fingers – never know when they’re going to spring a needle / graphic surgery shot on me!

Oh God, I just realise how snarky my comment sounded! I wrote it as I was running into a meeting so didn’t get time to end it with a customary smiley face (am I the only one who loves a good emoticon to convey my tone?) It was more a comment left in solidarity … you should see how Mia and Lana torture me with their stories…

    i actually agree with Ajay.
    I love excess baggage.
I think it’s a much healthier message to send to ordinary Australians who may be struggling with their weight compared to biggest loser.
To have a nutritionist, a psychologist and a personal trainer on standby and to actually see them show that the show is actually about health rather than ratings. I say shame on 9 too. Although i much prefer Go! so the move doesn’t bother me too much.

It is embarrassing that Mick Molloy thinks his remarks are Australian humour.
As for the name story my husban has a very common surname. When we married I kept my maiden name partly cause its my name but also because it is a little unusual but not so unusual that people would have trouble with it. The ADF Forces Commander is named Ash Powers – I always think with a name like that how could he do anything else!
Cannot believe the govt will spend $1bn on detention centres. They need to sort themselves out as such an exccessive amount of money is ridiculous!

I’m glad I chose Tony as well, but have always had a soft spot for Mick because he sent my (then) young daughter a lovely letter when sent him a “fan” letter.
At the risk of being sued myself, may I say that maybe the reason Nicole Cornes sued Mick Molloy is because she has legal qualifications, which made it easier for her.
I heard the remark in context and felt it was a bit severe to sue.

its funny how things go in cycles..

names and their consequences seem to be in at the moment – first your video about the athletes name, this, and also the hatred being aimed at Lana del ray for trying to change her persona by changing her name and trying to deleting all previous online evidence when she was called Elizabeth Grant..

don’t forget there is also a STEEL sidebottom in AFL, although the word bottom in anyones name might bring the awsomness of ‘Steel’ down a few notches. he was the 6th boy born into the sidebottom family and his mum knew that he needed a strong name in order to stand up for himself.

I’m not a fan of Mick molloy, never have been. He just has an extreemly different sense of humour to me. So if he’s on tv i simply turn iot off or change channels.
I disagree with his laywer using ‘ordinary’ Australians don’t get to ‘intellectualise’ about the meaning implied when defending Molloys joke. ‘Ordinary’ Australians don’t publicise their own personal views, joke or other wise about someone on national TV. If they do they face the consequences of their actions.

I hate this Mick Molloy thing I hope the court upholds the ruling. No wonder bullying is so rife if you can say anything you like so long as you call it a joke and no one can ‘intellectualise’ it or call you up on it.
