FACEBOOK COO SAYS WOMEN SHOULDN’T ACT LIKE MEN TO COMPETE

Sheryl Sandberg is the 42-year-old Chief Operating Officer at Facebook, the highest ranked woman in the company, and she says women should embrace their femininity in the workplace.

“I’ve cried at work. I’ve told people I’ve cried at work,’ she  said. ‘I don’t believe we have a professional self from Mondays through Fridays and a real self for the rest of the time.”

“I talk about my hopes and fears and ask people about theirs. I try to be myself. Honest about my strengths and weaknesses, and I encourage others to do the same. It’s all professional and it is all personal, all at the very same time.”

But critics said Ms Sandberg was already in a position of power and other women further down the chain of command could not afford the ‘luxury’ of tears at work.

What do you think?

Here’s what else is on our radar today:

Prince Charles 380x213 Daily Buzz: Women, dont be afraid to cry at work. Itll help.

Prince Charles and sister Princess Anne, eight and six.

1. Prince Charles released this previously unseen holiday snap of him, his sister Princess Anne and a corgi ahead of his mother’s (the Queen’s) Diamond Jubilee.

2. A gay couple have become the first in New South Wales to be officially recognised as the parents of a child, born by a surrogate. A court found the woman was not paid and did so voluntarily, also agreeing to have her name removed from the birth certificate.

3. Fairfax journalists at The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald and the Australian Financial Review returned to work after a 36-hour strike, protesting the removal of 66 editorial jobs from the Newcastle Herald and Illawarra Mercury to a central hub … based in New Zealand. The Canberra Times staff also joined the stop work action yesterday.

4. The minimum wage is now $606.40 a week after a ‘modest’ $17.10 increase by Fair Work Australia.

Kim Phuc 380x285 Daily Buzz: Women, dont be afraid to cry at work. Itll help.

Kim Phuc, nine, flees from the destruction

5. The girl who caught the attention of the world after she was snapped fleeing naked, with burns to her body from napalm during the Vietnam War, says the image ultimately freed her, despite wanting to escape its powerful pull for many years. It will be 40 years on June 8 since it was snapped and the photographer Nick Ut and Kim Phuc remain close friends. He took her to hospital after this photo was taken (she collapsed unconscious) and flashed his American press pass, demanding the reluctant doctors treat her. Kim Phuc is married these days with two children of her own. Nick Ut says Kim has always been like a daughter to him.

6. A Justin Bieber concert in Europe went so out of control that 49 fans were injured, more attempted to paddle inflatable rafts across a lake to see their hero and the Oslo mayor reportedly hid behind a tree to avoid it all. Oh, youth!

I once cried at work and the person whom I cried in front of COMPLETELY used it against me in a subsequent meeting with my supervisor. I was humiliated and absolutely furious.

I once had a breakdown at work and cried in front of two of my best friends at work, who are in this case unfortunately lower down the pecking order than me.
I was swiftly called in to speak to my superior, who told me that it was absolutely inappropriate that I showed “weakness” through crying at work.
“You’re not going to get respect by crying,” they told me.

No way – you can NEVER cry at work if you want to be taken seriously.

Really? In january i had the unfortunate task of making people redundant who had worked for the company for a long time and were highly thought of. I was lucky to be able to speak through my tears to tell them they were no longer required. I think if i had delivered this message without emotion it would have been much worse. at least they could see how torn i was by it & how difficult a decision it was for me to make.

I agree with not crying it you are being hauled out about performance, you need to suck it up, but sometimes it is okay to let your emotions come through. I think people think more of you for it.

Wow – what a tough role – my sympathies. That’s definitely worthy of tears and shows that you are a lovely human being. I agree with your comment – it’s more that we need to suck it up in more simple every day cases of things not going your way, people being rude etc, and to find a different way of working through the situation.

Anyone who hasn’t read Kim Phuc’s story should. It is an important piece of history and a stark reminder of the victims of war.

Not wanting to be rude, but last time I checked you need a man and a woman to create a child… How can a gay couple be recognised as the “parents”? Surely other gay couples have been legally declared the adoptive parents of a child before, so this makes no sense to me. Why is it different, and if it is different, how and why?

My understanding of this is that the unique aspect is the surrogacy component. Gay couples have either adopted children or had IVF before and been seen legally as the parents, but never in an organised surrogate situaton. Another fantastic step forward :)

What the hell? So, the government will recognise that a gay couple can legally be parents but they won’t recognise that gay people can be married, but they can legally be partners? How utterly ridiculous and confused and nonsensical! Equal rights for all, I say, straight forward and simple.

I’m surprised they didn’t come up with another word for gay parent, like care-provider… Sheesh.
