Michelle Obama and Melania Trump meet at the White House for the first time.

This is the meeting of the current First Lady, Michelle Obama, and the future First Lady, Melania Trump.

They are at the White House in the Yellow Oval room having “tea”.

Ms Obama sits on the right. She is a lawyer, writer and arguably one of the most powerful and admired women in the world for her work in campaigning to abolish poverty and for the right to education for adolescent girls around the world. Ms Obama has been good for the White House, good for women. Her popularity has surpassed that of her husband – current US President Barack Obama – and many have called for her to run for President in 2020.

Ms Trump sits on the left. She is Slovene American and a former model. Her face and body have graced the covers of Harper’s Bazaar, Ocean Drive, In Style, New York Magazine, Avenue, Allure, Vanity Fair, Vogue. She became a US citizen in 2006 and speaks six languages: Slovenian, Serbian, English, French, Italian and German.

Details of the conversation will not be open to the press. Usually the press is invited to take photos of this moment but this time the White House released its own photograph of the historic meeting. Ms Obama also reportedly took Ms Trump for a tour of the living quarters.

We can imagine the tête-à-tête to be horrendously just slightly awkward for a handful of reasons.

Why?

Ms Obama has spent the past months fiercely and very visibly endorsing Hillary Clinton in her race for President against Trump.

“I wish I didn’t have to say this, but indeed dignity and respect for women and girls is also on the ballot in this election,” she told crowds as she stood next to Clinton on stage at a campaign rally in North Carolina.

As well as this, Ms Trump has been accused of lifting certain passages, almost verbatim, from Ms Obama’s speeches during the Trump campaign. In July, at the Republican National Convention, Ms Trump told the crowd: “From a young age, my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life. That your word is your bond, and you do what you say and keep your promise. That you treat people with respect.”

Almost exactly eight years earlier, when Ms Obama addressed the Democratic National Convention, she spoke of the same sentiment, in almost exactly the same words: “Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values,” she told the crowd. “Like, you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond; that you do what you say you’re going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect – even if you don’t know them and even if you don’t agree with them.”

Now these two women are meeting. In front of the whole world. Awkward….

The meeting of the two women took place at the same time as President Obama met with President Elect Donald Trump for the first time in the Oval Office.
