Rape is, like, totally cool. As long as the sex is ‘spectacular.’

I don’t know whether to laugh, cringe or throw something so I’m going to do all three. You may want to join me after you watch this preposterous and bizarre video by someone called Kiely Williams (a 24 year old actress and singer) who has recorded a fun little song about how sexy rape can be.

If you thought this video was a bit ick, it’s like Baa Baa Black sheep compared to what Kiely has just released. Let’s try to leave aside the fact that musically, the song is appalling (if that’s possible). The message of the song and accompanying video is that it’s totally cool to have sex with someone who is unconscious and unable to consent. SO LONG AS THE SEX IS SPECTACULAR. Let’s also try to leave aside the bizarre logic gap in the song where Kiely admits she passed out and can’t remember what happened but then insists that it doesn’t matter that Nameless Dude raped her because ‘the sex was spectacular’.

The whole this is just…..well, you’ve got to watch it to truly appreciate it.

To me, it looks like a Chaser skit except not funny.

They might be old cliches, but rape myths still do the rounds with frightening regularity. From ”she was drunk” to ”she looked tarty”, ”she didn’t say no” and ”she meant yes”, rape myths hold that women provoke or deserve sexual assault – leaving perpetrators helpless or less culpable.

During this month’s airing of The Sexual Life of Us, a documentary on Australian sexuality, Felicity tells of losing her virginity, drunk at 15 in a crowded room at a party.

”I basically said no, at first, I don’t know if he heard or not, but he continued and I didn’t say anything after that, you know, I was too scared to.”

According to the Australian Institute of Criminology, the strongest predictors for holding rape supportive views are being male, politically conservative and having a low income.

It should be possible for all of us (male, female, pop singer) to understand that it is rapists who are responsible for rape, not the victims.

Sure, there are grey areas sometimes. But while drunkenness may be dangerous and hinder your ability to look after yourself, it does not mean you have given up your right to say no. Sparkly undies, sexy clothing and sexy dancing may or may not be seeking attention. But they are not seeking to be raped.

In response to her critics, Kiely says: ”I wrote Spectacular and made the video to bring attention to a serious women’s health and safety issue.” Pleading the case for artistic licence, she says: ”Don’t shoot the messenger.” If she was genuinely serious about the health and safety of women, Kiely should have asked viewers to instead ignore the messenger and the myth-laden depiction of rape.
