madgetomdefense1 Sorry Madonna, I disagree. Vehemently.

Madonna has come out in defence of Tom Cruise after meeting him at her Malawi benefit.

She said, “I don’t care if people
worship turtles or frogs – if they’re good people, that’s all I care
about, and he (Cruise) is a good person. I think he gets a raw deal,
just as I think the orphans in Malawi get a raw deal; just as I think a
lot of marginalized people get a raw deal.”

Tom Cruise is the world’s most powerful movie star. Marginalised?
Tom Cruise is a multi-multi-multi-millionaire. MARGINALISED?
Tom Cruise uses his position of power to criticise and condemn vulnerable people who use medication to treat their mental illnesses including post-natal depression.

He uses his platform of international media attention to broadcast his views CONSTANTLY.
Marginalised? Like an orphan in Malawi? Give me a break.
I’m all for people having their own beliefs. You can be a scientologist or, as Madonna suggests, worship frogs and turtles. More power to you.
But don’t go ramming your beliefs down the throats of others as Mr Cruise is so famous for doing.

Scientology is not a religion, it’s a money making cult. They harm their own children, people who choose a different path are vilified and thrown out of their families, and this is all based on L. Ron Hubbard’s decision (stated) that he would “make up” his own religion to make money – he was quite up-front about it all.
Tom Cruise is a proponent of a cult that does all the above and also vilifies people who seriously need medication to treat mental illness. Yes, our society is over-medicated, but there are people who need antidepressants and mood stabilisers and who would die without them (i.e. suicide).
There is no way this man should get any publicity other than for the films he makes – we don’t want to hear about his beliefs and he should not publicly endorse them – all we need is fans becoming converts.
As for the idea that Madonna should align his cause with that of orphan children – perhaps a mood stabiliser is in order? :)

I am not a fan of either of these people. I agree that someone should be free to have their own opinions, but no-one (no matter who they are) has the right to judge others about how they deal with their personal issues – unless of course their method of dealing with things involves hurting others.

I think that to an extent Tom Cruise does have something valid to say. I understand that our society has been over-medicalized. I get that. One of my friends went to a counseling session, and the first thing that the councilor recommended was for her to get on antidepressants- yet it turned out she had a short term episode that faded thanks to cognitive therapy/life changes ect. The problem with Tom Cruise is that he sees thinks as black and white. I don’t believe that PND is something that can be fixed by applying positive thinking only. In some cases drugs are necessary, and people should have a choice. However it is smart to question the system once in a while.
The reason John Travolta never gets bad rep is because he keeps his mouth shut. He wouldn’t risk his reputation to express an alternative point of view publicly.
Thanks to Anna Frasier and Eva Condoleon for offering different perspectives.

I think Madonna was just reaching for a quote to tie the two together so that her cause would get coverage.
If she comes out and says “tom Cruise isn’t that bad! Give him a go! And by the way the Malawi orphans need help, these two issues are so similar! Don’t you see?!” it will recieve way more news coverage, than her saying “The orphans! The orphans! Listen to me about the orphans!”
Smart thinking on her behalf IMO.

Great, just what Tom Cruise needs – more support. I have nothing against the being into your faith thing, but he takes it too far. I honestly can’t help hoping that someone close to him ends up with a mental illness, just so he can see what it’s like watching someone you care about going through hell, and knowing that they could actually do something about it.
Oh, and Anthony, obviously I can’t speak for Mia, but if I were her, I’d consider using strongly in place of vehemently when you learn to type and use punctuation properly. It seems like a fair trade to me.

Anthony, it’s good to see another male on here, though from this and other posts, you seem to be having trouble with polysyllabic words.
I think you’ll find that will improve once you finish High School.
In the meantime, you might feel more at home with the other intellectual pygmies on the “Big Brother” Forum?

Disagree Mia….What Madonna is trying to say that it doesn’t matter how bizaar you are or if you ram your views down peoples throats…if Tom wants to support a good cause, great! She does not judge him on his personal beliefs. Madonna has been passionate about many religions and has changed her views , thoughts , beliefs….it does not change the fact that she just wants to be the best person that she can possibly be. ok…scientologists are a bit odd…but yes- they are marginalsied to a degree. Marginalisation or marginalization (US) refers to the overt or covert trends within societies whereby those perceived as lacking desirable traits …etc etc.
….lets talk about some of the comments made by religious leaders and then we really would have something to worry about!
Madonna is a music superstar in a leotard and roller skates…give her a break…ps…nobody lays into John Travolta…they think he is fab! Is he just a better actor??? smart enough to not say anything…a player….which is better?

Come on, she’s a writer! Why should she have to dumb it down for you?!

It doesnt matter that some people think they should worship a GOD,, whatever that is,, it doesnt matter Tom Cruise thinks aliens are among us, it doesnt matter if they are,, there are enough weirdos around to make aliens fade into insignifance. Madonna is a good lookin chick with lots of money,, sometimes good lookin chicks are nuts, money stuffs it up, all the worse. Mia, next time use the word “Strongly” Save us the trip to Dictionary.com As for me, im trading in my god for this one, and he signs his name with a Capital “G” :)

I think this article by Miranda Devine is worth reading:
    http://www.smh.com.au/news/opinion/mugged-in-print-by-bigots-in-righteous-masks/2008/01/30/1201369226114.html
While I don’t necessarily agree with Madonna about the orphans, I do think Scientologists get a bad rap. It’s just another religion – religions are not supposed to make sense (after all they are based on faith, not fact) but Scientologists in particular are made to defend their beliefs in a way that Christians or Muslims, for example, are not.
So I think Cruise’s behaviour is partly caused by the constant need to justify his belief system. The other half is the inbuilt doctrine of most religions to “spread the word” and recruit as many members as possible.
Cruise’s behaviour is annoying, but not something to condemn him for. Many other celebrities talk about their Christian faith, but don’t receive the same kind on censure.
I have bern harrassed by more Mormans in person than witnessed outburts by Cruise. You cannot choose to watch the footage on Youtube and blame him for making you watch it. (And it’s just not as funny as Peter Jackson’s account of working for Prince).
Some people are religious nuts – whatever floats your boat! Personally, Hillsong offends me on a lot more levels, but that’s just me.

    Totally agree Mia!
One more thing that anyone with a mental illness DOESN’T need is someone like Tom Cruise making them feel worse about getting treatment for it.
Don’t they have it hard enough as it is?
Also, I don’t think he should comment on something he will NEVER experience first hand – post-natal depression. Especially because his views are so unhelpful, to say the least.
