Last night saw Victoria be hit by its biggest earthquake in 30 years. At 5.3 magnitude, no serious damage or injury has been reported. Instead, Melbournites were quick to prove their strength and quick wit and the jokes started flying.
Here are some of the best memes we could find.

Dear Melbourne, nice work ripping off the Adelaide earthquake picture (didn’t even take a new picture)

Hey, it’s called being efficient through recycling!

this annoyed me based upon the fact that despite the lack of TOO much damage (however the store across the road from my job lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in stock here in Morwell) it was extremely frightening. I live just 15min from the epicenter of the quake and it did not feel funny. I live in a house that is held up by pillars. My animals did not find it funny, for an hour afterwards I was still shaking and trying to calm down my animals. My elderly neighbour was frightened out of her wits and a lot of her life-long belongings were shattered on her floor. She is devastated.
Melbourners got very snooty and judgey about people commenting on this immediately on the internet and dumbing down peoples concerns and upset, but for people who live in this Gippsland region where it happened, I assure you it was no laughing matter. I was thankful that it didn’t result in anything like what happened in Christchurch and that besides getting smashed in the head with a bunch of cds and a photoframe while trying to hold some things from falling down, I am unscathed.
Sorry to be so serious, but it was scary and I don’t feel like laughing along with people who are belittling the scare.

It scared the crap out of me out in the north western suburbs of Melbourne, so you are not alone at all and I was on the internet making sure I was not hallucinating!!

come on … you’re fine, animals are fine, you can sort your CDs. Bad things happen a lot, good to have a dinner party story that didn’t land you in ICU.

youre missing the point.

No, no I was just making light in defense of what I thought were pretty funny (albeit unoriginal ) pictures. I’m glad you wrote though because I was feeling really bad about the post because you were upset by the earth quake – so am sorry for not being more supportive x hope all is good now

Anonymous, let me know where your next trip is and when. I will avoid being there to be clear of an imminent earthquake.

I know I might seem like a bit of a dowser, but I don’t find these funny.
I’ve been in a number of major earthquakes, and there have been some that are absolutely horrific on our doorstep in the last year. People commenting on them on Facebook is one thing, but I don’t think Mamamia should be making light of them.
I was in the Newcastle earthquake, I was in Rome in April 2009 when a quake struck in Italy and killed a few hundred people, I was in Christchurch over New Years and in 1 night there were 12 earthquakes that woke me up, including s number over 4 and 2 over 5 on the Richter Scale. I saw the devastation that was in Christchurch. I was absolutely shattered after being there and seeing the damage.
I’ve not been personally affected by these earthquakes, apart from a few broken night’s sleep in Christchurch and Rome, and I’m not claiming that I am in any way a victim (I mentioned my experiences in Christchurch, as I cannot imagine what they have been going through for the past year and a half.) I just don’t find this to be a joking matter. Look at Christchurch, look at Japan, look at the earthquakes that caused the Boxing Day tsunamis. Not so funny now is it?

Sorry, but yes, you are being down on this unnecessarily.
A few funny pictures that quick-witted people have put on the internet are not intending to make a political statement that earthquakes aren’t devastating.

What would Kanye West have to say about this earthquake……..

I don’t get it

I liked this one too…

Memes? In a gallery? That’s some quality journalism right there….

Thanks!

Many of these pictures appeared last week after the similarly huge earthquake in Gunnedah/Tamworth (North Western NSW)

& Adelaide last year.

& canberra. But it’s allll about melbourne. I’d hate to see if it was Sydney too. ugh. Me me me. lol. Really tired of hearing about it!
loading...
Oh and Newcastle too. That was a real earthquake.
loading...
Wow, girls, get over yourselves lol Talk about chip on the shoulder.
loading...
This was good too.

I got the t-shirt!

That outdoor setting one is a classic – and appeared only minutes after the quake. They’re quick!!!
loading...
I swear I saw it on facebook within 3 minutes of feeling the shake!
loading...
Oh I think Maggie’s comment below might explain how they managed it!

Hehe loved this. Had the same pics come up for our “massive Perth storm” last week.
“We will rebuild!”

Yeah we had that picture for the Canberra earthquake several weeks ago!

… and the Adelaide earthquake in Oct last year…
loading...
I recognised it from there too KJ, and no doubt it was stolen from elsewhere before that!
loading...
Yes, but it didn’t happen at federation square now, did it?
loading...
Like like like! Especially the lone plastic chair and the bike one!
loading...
I like this one….

I give up looking at posts that have galleries in them now.
what happened to the other galleries where you could just click through and see the pictures? This one just opens up a new page with the picture on it, and you have to click back and click on each thumbnail individually…I dont think I care enough to go through all of that lol
Is it just on certain browsers it does this, or is this just the new gallery youve decided to use?
I hate to be a complainer, but its really annoying, especially when you actually want to see the pictures.
loading...
Same thing happened to me; was hoping just this gallery in particular is merely faulty.
loading...
It’s been happening with all Mamamia galleries for a few days.
Moderator – can you comment?
loading...
Drives me mad too. Clicking back and forth on the individual photo’s feels so 5 years ago! Especially a pain when I’m having a sneaky look at work LOL
loading...
It happens all the time now. It is so annoying that I also have given up trying to look through the galleries.
loading...
Hey freetoclaire, we are working on it as fast as we can! In the meantime, try hitting CTRL + R.

Hey, thanks for responding Nat.
With hubby working in IT I know how fiddly and annoying it can be to fix things like this, glad to know its not just me and not just a new way of doing things that I didnt understand haha
loading...
No, definitely not just you!

I’m using an up to date version of Chrome and have had no problem with the galleries.
Chrome is a cool browser – much quicker and ties in really well with gmail accounts. Worth a thought if you’re on a PC that you are allowed to install stuff on.
loading...
I use Chrome too. Most up to date one. But the galleries don’t show up ALL THE TIME. No matter how many times I do Ctrl+R. I find it’s better to wait a few hours or risk lots of annoyance

LOL at the Fed Square picture, & Willy Wonka.
loading...
I was so impressed with how quickly it turned from WTF to wit. Love the humour that came out of this!
loading...
Seriously, you guys need to change how the gallery operates. Having to keep on clicking on each individual thumbnail to see the picture then hit back to be able to see the next one is incredibly annoying.
loading...
I got through two then couldn’t be bothered with all the muck around anymore.
loading...
do you? I just click on the right arrow on the big picture and it goes through the gallery
loading...
It is annoying!!! Once I click on a photo on the thumbnail & then press back all is resolved.
loading...
Sometimes the arrow comes up, sometimes it doesn’t…

Hey Caroline, thanks for your comment – our tech gurus have been looking into it. In the meantime, try CTRL + R.

I suggest you have a read of MM’s post earlier in the week – FWP.
This comment fits there perfectly.
Like they have said in numerous other posts, they are working on it!
