Foreign Minister Julie Bishop is in Vogue this month.

Our glamorous foreign minister makes her Vogue debut.

The withering, thousand-yard stare of the Australian Foreign minister Julie Bishop is a well-known political advantage, but it’s effective for other purposes, such as posing for Vogue magazine.

Bishop, 58, looks truly lovely in the feature, which will appear in the August issue of Vogue, out Monday.

In the accompanying interview, Bishop discusses politics, family, “me time” and her mate Tony Abbott.

Maybe they do triathlon together on the weekends? Bishop says in the interview that running keeps her physically and mentally fit.

“There are lots of benefits from it, obviously keeping mind and body active is important, but it’s also ‘me time’,” Bishop told Vogue.

“I spend a lot of time thinking about that day, that week, the issues I have to deal with — there’s certain clarity of thought that comes with exercising outside. And when I’m running overseas it gives me an opportunity to see a city,” she says.

Bishop is often asked what it’s like being one of only two women in Tony Abbott’s cabinet, and she gives her standard response (she said the same thing to Annabel Crabb on Kitchen Confidential) to Vogue.

“As I often say, I’ve never been a man in this position, how do I compare?” she says.

“I see myself as a parliamentarian and a minister, I have a job to do and I put all that I have into doing it, so being a woman doesn’t play a role in that.

“But I’m proud of the fact that I’m the first female foreign minister.”

She’s also the Libs’ best hope for their first female prime minister – but like her colleague Malcolm Turnbull, she insists she’s happy right where she is.

“Everybody asks that question. Why do they ask? I’m very happy with the job that I have,” she says.

According to News.com.au, Bishop wore some of her own clothes for the shoot, including a Balenciaga blouse, an Armani suit and Guiseppe Zanotti shoes.

She looks well-groomed, crisp and competent.

Bishop’s list of achievements include attending Harvard business school, becoming a partner in lawfirm Clayton Utz, becoming the first female deputy leader of the Liberal Party, and putting up with Tony Abbott.

Her success in federal politics still sometimes shocks her.

“That was a special moment in my life,” she said of chairing the Security Council at the United Nations on Australia’s behalf.

“I think at that moment it really hit me that yes, I’m here, I’m the foreign minister of Australia.”

Beneath that steely exterior, though, Bishop is just like the rest of us: needing of cuddles.

“We all need people around to provide support and a hug and tell you things are OK, and I’m no different from everybody else in that regard,” she said.

Someone give this lady a hug! Pick up the latest issue of Vogue next week to read the full interview.
