It all started when I came down with the Death Cold From Hell. I took myself off to the doctor, hoping for some kind of magical medicine that would cure me of my sickness and allow me to get on with work and my uni assignments. Little did I know, there was going to be no such thing.
“Just try to relax,” my doctor said. “You know – take your mind off things. Come back in a week if there’s no improvement.”
The word “relax” has never been part of my vocabulary. I’m not sure at what point I became the sort of person that doesn’t know what it means to sleep more than six hours a night, but it just happened. Amongst my friends, I’m known as the “frantic” or “scattered” one. In any one day, I’ll work nine hours and go to class for another four hours and then maybe settle down to a nice dinner at 11pm. And I like it that way.
Needless to say, when I eventually get a moment of spare time, I just don’t know what to do with myself. I’ll find myself staring into space frantically trying to remember something urgent I absolutely have to get done. I’m not all that comfortable unless I’m juggling at least three electronic devices in my hands and seven different tasks in my mind.
But my doctor said to relax. And if I was ever going to get rid of my death cold, that was what I was going to do, even if it (ironically) killed me.
So I schlepped myself off to yoga at the local gym. That’s supposed to be relaxing, right? WRONG. In my enthusiasm, I’d accidentally booked myself into a Bikram class. Instead of relaxing, I spent an hour sweating profusely and wondering if I was going to die. Happily, I was fine, although that’s possibly because I then spent the rest of the afternoon drinking copious amounts of water.
Meditation was next up, and the words “epic fail” are probably the most relevant to use in regards to my experience. In hindsight, I’m not sure why I thought sitting still in a room doing absolutely nothing for an extended period of time was ever going to be a success, considering I can’t even sit through a movie without dozing off. I should have been emptying my mind, but I was too busy missing my bed and thinking those wild thoughts that pop into your head when you’re on the verge of dozing off. Never. Again.
I tried to read, but got distracted by more interesting things happening on Twitter. I tried baking but destroyed several pans and nearly set myself on fire trying to make caramel (it’s going down in history as maybe the most stressful experience of my life, actually).
In the end, I gave up on anything fancy. I just pulled my running shoes on, grabbed my iPod and took a long walk to the beach and back. I even left my phone at home so that it was just me, my music, the pavement and the sunshine – and I loved every bit of it. It was the perfect balance of doing a lot less than I’m used to but still doing something. It was even – dare I say it – kind of relaxing.

My Dad bought me a voucher for an inner calm package at a beauty therapists for my birthday. I went one night after work – but I felt I really needed to focus on relaxing, or just being – calm. My mind ticked over as the therapist scrubbed, rubbed and massaged my head – all I could think of was what I didn’t get done at work that day, what I had to do when I got home, what I had to do the next day….I felt I’d really wasted a good experience.

My favourite way to relax is with a cup of tea, a bar of chocolate and a full, distraction-free episode of “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills/NY/OC”. Heaven!!

On a daily basis – every night my partner and I have a shower together and talk about our day – a great way to de-stress and get things off our chest before cooking dinner and sitting down for the night. Also a great way for us to connect and and just talk trash too!
Other then that I do find weeding the garden on the weekend quite relaxing, not gardening in general as cutting the tops off the pittosporums is an absolute chore! But to just wander the garden, watch our puppies running around and pull out the weeds – a trip to bunnings to buy some new seedlings never hurt anyone either!

My husband and I also shower together every night and talk about our days then. It’s such a nice close time.
and if one isn’t home yet, the other waits to shower so we can have those moments together.

I am really suprised that people need to shedule an ‘activity’ to relax. Doing nothing relaxes me. Like really, doing nothing, try it…its awesome!!

I relax when (or after perhaps?) I’ve made my body work hard and my mind take a backseat. So I relax at the gym, walking on the beach or playing violin. They all make my body perform and only use limited and very focused mental power

When I get home from work, if I ask very nicely, my boyfriend massages my feet for me while I drink a glass of wine. I work in customer service so I often come home in a foul mood after a day of ‘the customer is always right’.
This fast-tracks my relaxation big time.

My boyfriend does this too. Most relaxing thing ever – other than a facial. I find facials even more relaxing than a normal massage for some reason.

Sade has this pavlovian effect on me whenever I listen to her music. Instant unclenching of all my muscles.

I feel the same way about George Clooney!!!

Bath. Music. Candles. ahhhhhh.

I need to be in nature to relax. Preferably near water.

I used to struggle with the relaxation thingy. I have been semi-successful with meditation to a free download from the USA dept of health called Ride the Wild Horse BUT the best thing I learnt from that website was that it is now being recognised that certain people relax more with activity rather than s-l-o-w-i-n-g down to snail’s pace. Whew! I feel so much better and more relaxed now I know this.

Ha, bikram yoga is my relaxing time! I might not be relaxing my body, but I need so much concentration that I can’t possibly think of the million things that are usually in my head. Plus it is energizing so I feel awesome afterwards. Although it is still really multitasking- exercise & relaxing.

Is it good exercise? The centre near me promotes it for weight loss and I need to lose a bit, but wanted to tone up also, and wondered if it was a good option.

It is awesome for toning and weight loss. It gets your heart rate up so it is cardio as well. I lost a little bit of weight when I started but mostly I’ve noticed the new muscle definition. It’s not an easy workout but I have never felt stronger or healthier.

i like to relax by having a cup of tea or hot chocolate and reading my magazines or a really good book or by doing some yoga with some Active Child (musician) playing in the background

I’ve never been a beach person but I do love the water (a cold bath in summer after the gym is heaven) – the last few times I’ve had days off work, I’ve gone to the beach and just got my feet wet. Paying attention to see where the waves are going to break (so my shorts don’t get wet!) actually makes the time pass really quickly and takes my mind off everything else.
My gym session in the morning is my stress relief – I either zone out while I’m on the treadmill and keep an eye on the TV to stop getting bored, or I’ll talk with the person next to me if it’s someone who’s there regularly.
I also love a bath at the end of the day, but I’m finding it harder just to lie there and enjoy the water. I used to be able to close my eyes and relax but lately I’m using the time to catch up on my Facebook or Twitter feeds. Occasionally while I’m in there I catch up on the junk mail that’s accumulated in my letter box, but sometimes my mind is racing so fast I can’t even concentrate on that!

I read, or listen to music. At the moment I am loving Phillip Phillips – winner of American Idol. Listen to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfChqZ9DZ7I amazing.
I am sure the Bikram would have rid you of that cold, I have met some people who swear by sweating out a sickness!

I don’t know if it’s that I don’t know how to relax, or I just don’t have time. Working full-time, studying part-time, with a husband and baby, there’s never minute where I can sit still unless it’s sitting at the study desk until midnight, trying to keep up with the readings or finish assignments.
In my lunch breaks I go to the gym, which I love, but that’s still not quiet/relax time, I’m just trying to work out as hard as I can because the only daylight hours I see at home are on weekends. And I only study when Baby is asleep so that I’m not missing out on anything, or turning him away when he wants his mummy.
So, do I face the dilemma, have an early night, or watch tv, but know that I’ll have to catch up more the next night, or study at lunch, thereby missing my gym session? eek!
Argh! Oh well, it hasn’t bothered me enough to change anything yet so I’m sure I can hold out another 6 months until I’ve finished studying.

Can you take any of your readings to the gym to look over while you’re on the cardio equipment?

Thanks for your reply, Bunny. I have occassionally, but only when I’m not working very hard:) I got motion sickness the other day from reading on the cross-trainer, but the bike is okay…
On that note, I’ll give it another try tomorrow:)

Recently, I started a boxing class and it is fantastic!! It’s not so much relaxing to do the actual class but it makes you focus completely on what you are doing. An hour passes very fast.
Besides that, I love crosswords (nerdy, I know) and reading. A cup of tea of nice, as is chocolate. Ultimately though, the best thing is more sleep. It takes very little to put me out of whack, so a good sleep is amazing.

Yoga is the ultimate relaxation for mind and body. I am so ‘unco’ and left handed to boot so I spend the whole time listening to the instructor and focussing on which leg or arm or lunge to do at the right time that I completely forget about the real world and leave the class in a different and much calmer headspace. Even the drive home is great because I have missed peak hour….

When I’m stressed I work out – hardcore strength and HIIT sessions are my saviour – or I put on my salsa shoes and go to as many dance classes and socials as I can
loading...
I have to admit, I did some HIIT sessions with my trainer, and although being sooooo close to being sick, I felt great afterwards! Hello endorphins!
loading...
I love that feeling!!
loading...
Pardon my ignorance, but what is a HIIT session?
loading...
I wondered that too, so I ‘googled’ it. It’s High Intensity Interval Training.

Yup, I agree about dancing! Best stress release ever. I can turn up stressed to the max but am always happy and relaxed by the time I leave.

I go for a run. Fresh air, exercise endorphins, burning calories…. Win win win! Good tunes a must!

I watch the most abominable shit on tv. The Real Housewives and Teen Mom. Turns my addled brain to such lovely marshmallowy mush….

Amen to that!

I go to classes at my gym.
I find I just get “in the zone” and focus on what is at hand that my mind doesn’t wander. I also love to get massages but even when I try to relax here I still find my mind wandering.
Alternatively, a good book and a cup of tea curled up in my favourite chair also work well.

I watch Bones. David Boreanaz relaxes me…sigh

Criminal Minds. Shemar Moore….

So I’ve had to learn to relax after being put on anti depressants to stave off teeth clenching which I’ve developed anxiety over. (Yep, I’m fun) It’s the result of doing full time Masters, full time work and building a house!
So I’ve been doing meditation classes, which I hate the class while I’m there but I like doing it at home every now and then.
I normally exercise, but I’ve got a knee injury from hockey and I’m on a running ban. Seems meditation has filled the void for now
loading...
I hate meditation too – I did classes a while back, and I only really liked the active types – tai chi was far and away my favourite. I got told by psychs and doctors I’m an active relaxer. Some of us are good at clearing our minds sitting there going Om, some are better going for a run or doing a boxing class. I like the latter, like you. Could you swim? Or even go and do pilates or something (I assume yoga is out)? Or even reading or watching a favourite movie? I find that relaxing, even though it’s active. Don’t worry, there are plenty of us around!

Reading! Heavily pregnant, I don’t really like the idea of getting out to the shops or the library to get a good supply of books. However, I was given an ereader for my recent birthday, and have discovered a world of free ebooks, my local library’s website where I can borrow ebooks for 3 weeks (renewable), and finally decided to bite the bullet and get a set of the Harry Potter books (I’ve read them before, by borrowing from libraries or friends, but had recently concluded that I like them enough to seek to own a set). I am still definitely a fan of p-books, but I must admit I love being able to carry a library of books with me!

I usually write to relax- I often wonder how much better I would have done at uni if I spent all my writing time on my assignments!
But now, as a teacher at report time, I have no energy or motivation to write anything. And that makes me sad and grumpy.
I want to write, but I’ve written maybe 10 pages in the last month where normally I’d be writing around 100

Yoga without question. I go to quite strong classes, though not bikram, and love it. My job is crazy, full on and loud and I really notice physically and mentally if I haven’t been going. The two 1.5 hours a week make such a difference to my mood and patience and coping.
The problem is, when I get busy with reports and planning and IEPS O’s when I miss classes, and it is when I need it most!

Are you me? Oh the Catch 22 of approaching report writing…
1) Miss yoga and use time to write reports = feeling stressed and getting grumpy at the students.
2) Go to yoga and stay up even later manically writing reports = feeling stressed and getting grumpy at students.
Poor students!
